In business news, Google purchased YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars in<br />

stock. ITunes reached one billion song downloads in February 2006. NASA<br />

launched the New Horizon Probe. Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death for<br />

crimes against humanity. President George W. Bush admitted that the CIA had<br />

secret prisons outside the US.<br />

In 2006, gas prices were around $2.60 a gallon. The prices for butter and<br />

margarine were 34.88% less in 2006 than they are now in 2017, according to the<br />

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. $20 of butter and margarine in 2006 would cost<br />

$30.71, today.<br />

In sports, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the 2006 Super Bowl against<br />

Seahawks. The World Series Champions were the St. Louis Cardinals. Florida won<br />

the NCAA football and basketball championships. The horse that won the<br />

Kentucky Der<strong>by</strong> was Barbaro. Italy won the FIFA World Cup.<br />

Some odd things happened in 2006, too. Terrell Owens tried to kill himself<br />

<strong>by</strong> taking 35 painkillers, supposedly, but it didn’t work. Abraham Lee Shakespeare<br />

won a $30 million lottery jackpot in 2006; in 2010, his body was found buried<br />

under a concrete slab in a friend’s backyard. His family had declared him missing<br />

in 2009.<br />
