DESIGNED
to please
Enhance your landscape with a sculptural piece
that gives meaning to its surrounds.
Words Craig Wilson
Regardless of the style,
your garden presents
the opportunity for a
statement piece of art
or sculpture.
well-composed garden is a
A rich creation of plant textures,
flowering colour, bird life and fruit for
the kids to pick. Of course it’s many
other things as well, depending on
who the garden was made for and
who looks after it. Over the fence,
your neighbour may love the ‘layer
upon layer’ look of clipped buxus and
laurel hedges, while you may prefer
your slice of Eden to be a floral display
with curving borders highlighted by the
soft form of a silver weeping pear.
Regardless of the style, your
garden presents the opportunity for
a statement piece of art or sculpture
that will add a layer of meaning to
your space and say a bit about who
you are and the garden you have
chosen to create. This is how you may
go about it.
First, survey your garden and identify
any view you particularly enjoy. It may
be a long vista terminating at the end
of a lawn or it may be the border
most visible from your favourite
morning coffee spot.
Think about the character you
wish to transpose and create. Is it a
statement with underlying personal
meaning, or is it a reflection of a
specific period you love? The hard part
will be choosing a piece that captures
the essence of what you want to
express. A mass-produced chain store
item might not fit the bill. It can take
patience to find the right piece for
your space, so don’t rush it. You may
stumble upon something unexpected
in an overseas market, or while visiting
an out-of-town friend. Some may
choose to commission an admired
artist to create a legacy piece to be
passed on for generations to come.
Once the location and the article
are chosen, think about how it
interacts visually with the surrounding
plant material. Does it need a dense
evergreen backdrop to highlight an
inherent metallic sheen or will it work
best against a flat finished plastered
wall?
Finally, some clever lighting will
enhance your creation with shadow
and tonal gradients. As twilight fades
your thoughtful creation will take on a
new life and become a focal point with
undeniable presence.
