the fire
Pellet fires offer heat at your fingertips and the
ambience of a traditional wood burner – without
the environmental consequences.
Words Wendy Dunn
The fuel
New Zealand’s wood pellets are made
from recycled Pinus radiata sawdust
and shavings, dried to reduce moisture,
and heavily compressed to form a clean
condensed pellet. The 15kg bags of
pellets are easy to store, with a tonne
(66 bags) stacking neatly into a garage or
storage area.
Wood pellets are completely natural,
with no additives or glues used in the
manufacturing process. They offer a
sustainable fuel source, and burning
them is a carbon-neutral heating
solution.
The flame
Dry fuel creates more heat. Wood
pellets contain very low levels of
moisture and ash, making them burn
hotter and more cleanly than their wood
counterparts. With virtually all of the
material burned and converted to heat,
this is one seriously efficient burning
process.
The fire
Free-standing and insert wood pellet
appliances come in a range of stunning
styles to complement the home of
even the fussiest interior designer.
They require a much smaller flue than
conventional wood fires, which can
make a pellet fire easier to add to your
home and provide a greater range of
installation options.
Best of all, they emit fewer pollutants
than traditional enclosed fires.
Meet the Ravelli sisters: Rosa & Elena
These Italian wood pellet fires effortlessly combine style with function.
Each have a built-in timer, thermostat and push button start, while Elena
comes with a remote control too. Elena boasts a maximum heat output
of 8.6kW, while Rosa, a more compact model, rates at a commendable
6.5kW – enough to warm a 100m3 space (eg. 7m length x 6m width x
2.4m height) with average insulation. Both offer that dependable pellet
fire efficiency rating above 80 per cent – Rosa at 84% and Elena 81%.
