AT CHC ART GALLERY
Low brow meets high art in the energetic
work of Tony de Lautour. Christchurch Art
Gallery brings together a selection of his best
from the past 30 years in Us v Them. One of
New Zealand’s leading painters, de Lautour’s
early works drew from wide-ranging sources
including seedy underground street culture,
tattoos, post-punk music and comic books, as
well as fine English porcelain and antiques. De
Lautour was awarded a New Zealand Arts
Laureate in 2012, and over the past decade
his painting has developed into a unique take
on geometric abstraction. Tony will discuss his
paintings, sculptures and ceramics with curator
Peter Vangioni on May 9 at 6pm. Coinciding
with the opening, on May 4 at 7.30pm the
Gallery will also celebrate its 15th birthday
with a big free public party.

TIME FOR A BATHROOM BREAK
If you’ve a penchant for retro bathrooms and still life, best get yourself
into Jonathan Smart Gallery this month to see Blue Rinse by Wellington’s
Emily Hartley-Skudder. This new series expresses Emily’s talent for painting
commonplace objects in surreal still life arrangements, this time turning her
sharp and thoughtful eye to the powder room. The hauntingly real works
will be hung on wall tiles above a collection of plastic and porcelain basins
from the ’60s and ’70s. “So the overall look is that of a vaguely retro yet
weirdly contemporary bathroom showroom,” says Jonathan.
