LOCAL AUTHOR by Siedah Fortune The Ghost Ship of Brooklyn For award winning author Robert P. Watson, Ph. D., American history has always lived deep in his bones. After growing up in eastern Pennsylvania, it’s no wonder Watson’s proximity to landmarks like Gettysburg, Valley Forge, and the Liberty Bell made a lasting impression on his life today. “I remember as a kid running around the battlefield, pretending to be shooting the enemy and hiding behind cabins as all little boys do... [Now] I’m someone that does this in my free time and I do this for my job. It’s both my vocation and my avocation. I go to battlefields all over the world. I love it and I stand and look out at the battlefield and try to imagine what would the soldiers have seen? Try to walk in their footsteps to make it come alive,” Watson said. Currently a Political Science professor at Lynn University, Watson has the opportunity to communicate his extensive knowledge of U.S. history almost daily. For two decades, Watson’s well-respected voice has been shared in newspapers, books, and public radio. In addition to the 40 books Watson already has on the shelves, he is happy to announce another is on the way. 54 The Ghost Ship of Brooklyn, Watson’s latest novel, dives deep into an untold story that took place during the American Revolution. The narrative explores the accounts of five American soldiers imprisoned on a ship used by the British as a psychological weapon to deter other patriots. Although Watson was armed with documented complaints from the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin, the story truly began to unfold when he came across a diary in a Rhode Island library from a young POW escapee. “It was one hell of a story. What’s most exciting is he listed the names of a handful of other men that escaped. He mentioned where they were from, when they escaped, and their names. I used the two-century old primary sources to tell the stories through the eyes of the actual prisoners. Twice as many American men died [on the prison ship] than in combat during the entire Revolutionary War. It remains as one of the most tragic moments in American History and yet nobody knows anything about it.” NOVEMBER <strong>2017</strong> Whether it’s the history or the mystery that draws his following, Watson makes it a point to appeal to the general reader. For him, engaging a wide audience is an exciting challenge. “I try to get to know characters as a person. Every great movie, opera, and novel is always a compelling story about the individuals...their struggle, triumph, and tragedy. That’s what attracts us. It’s the human narrative,” he said.
