HEALTHY TRAVEL SICK AROUND THE WORLD by Candice Russell Nothing ruins a vacation more than being sick. You want to explore the villages of Switzerland, not crawl into bed with an illness you might have been able to avoid. Trips cost money and you cannot afford to miss one day of your adventure. Especially a foreign trip when days are planned from breakfast to midnight, it’s an expensive proposition to be sick. What can you do to prevent yourself from falling prey to illness? Get tips from experienced travelers who take preventive measures to stay healthy. In retrospect, one can look back and laugh at certain situations. Paris may be the most beautiful city in the world, but not if you have a cold that mimics the cold gray weather in France. On a bus tour of Greece, we had a prearranged lunch at a hotel in Thessaloniki where perhaps the mayonnaise in our salad had sat out too long. As a result, many of us had to ask the bus driver to make unscheduled stops for our problems. 90 Even worse is being the only person on an adventure with a major digestive illness. I ate a bowl of lentil soup in a restaurant in Madrid, Spain prior to a bus trip to visit a castle. The soup wreaked havoc with my insides and I spent the day visiting several bathrooms. I even had to ask the bus driver to pull over on the highway to vomit at the side of the road. I was sick for two days afterward. I have been to Haiti on many occasions and I knew the drill — only eat peelable fruits and vegetables. But on the last day, my friend and I paid a visit to a French restaurant in Petionville. We threw caution to the wind and ate salads. We paid for it with a six-week bout of diarrhea. Sometimes, one can be too cautious. While packing up to go home from a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico, I mistakenly drank a cup of tap water that had previously held a single rose. We postponed our leave-taking in anticipation of Montezuma’s Revenge, but nothing happened. NOVEMBER <strong>2017</strong> All my experiences were vacation interrupters rather than vacation spoilers. But why take chances? Travel generally means a disruption of sleep, food, and activity level. Be well-prepared and wellread about where you are going. Most travel websites will alert you to what you need to bring and what to avoid once you are there. Be safe, be healthy, and most of all have fun. P How to Stay Well on Vacation Don’t eat street food. Don’t drink water from the tap, even when brushing your teeth. Don’t overdo alcohol. No matter how delicious the food, don’t over-indulge. Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Use hand sanitizers with commonly used doors. Take immune-boosting vitamins and supplements. Don’t overdo exercise. Pack a roll of toiler paper and Kleenex. Take Pepto-Bismol, Kaopectacte, Imodium, and Benadryl with you. Make time to reflect upon your adventures by meditation or writing in a journal.
