2. COMMUNITY AGRICULTURE
LCC CRITERIA:
The Community must integrate opportunities for agriculture appropriate to the scale and density
of the Community using the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) as a basis for calculation. The urban agriculture
area can be aggregated in a central area or dispersed throughout the Community.
ANALYSIS
Based on the village density 3 30% of the village needs to be devoted to agriculture. While the scope of proposed buildout
is not yet determined, additional density would decrease the amount of area that would need to be dedicated to
agriculture.
Currently, the Friends of Algiers Village are considering planting fruit trees around the Guilford Country Store. A
significant part of GPI’s land is used as grazing pasture; its borders already contain apple trees and more fruit trees could
be planted. This constitutes approximately 25% of the community area (Algiers Village LCC Boundary). The remaining 5%
to 25% would need to be determined.
In the proposed concept plans
for Algiers, there are two areas
that will actively be used to grow
market food. These are in the
small open field north of the
Guilford Country Store, where a
farmer’s market can be hosted
alongside small community
growing plots or a community
orchard, and to the east of the
proposed community/senior
center, where small plots can be
tended by community members or
seniors as a kitchen garden.
MEETING THE IMPERATIVE
Based on the analysis above the
project can meet this agriculture
imperative. Approximately 5% of
additional food production needs to
occur in Algiers Village. Proposed
are small community garden plots
3 Without the GPI Property, Christ
Church, and 382 Calvin Coolidge, the FAR is
0.16, in which case 30% of the community
needs to be devoted to agriculture.
With the GPI property the floor area ratio
drops to 0.05, largely because the GPI and
Guilford Country Store land make up much of
the community’s undeveloped land. Including
GPI’s property in the project boundary as
proposed would mean that 50% of the
community’s area needs to be used for food
production.
