WELCOME TO
HONG KONG…
AND THE FUTURE
As Vinexpo Hong Kong this year celebrates its
20th birthday, the show has more than ever
become a harbinger of the future of the global
wine and spirits industry.
The epitome of this comes in the shape of Tmall’s
“Future Bar” which is being revealed at the show.
Tmall, China’s leading B2C online marketplace
owned by Alibaba Group is inviting Vinexpo
Hong Kong’s attendees to experience the future
of wine with Tmall robot waiters, face scanning
technology, a new smart wine cooler and much
more to discover on their stand.
Redefining commerce by enabling seamless
engagement between the online and offline
world, building a retail ecosystem that combines
both channels, making the shopping experience
more personal, engaging and convenient: all
these new technologies are part of Alibaba’s
“New Retail” strategy that will be disclosed at
their stand, and in a press conference tomorrow
at the show.
So interestingly, as winemaking increasingly gets
“back to the basics”, its distribution is becoming
more and more high tech. It’s just as well Vinexpo
is here to inform and educate the industry,
creating an unmatched networking platform!
Passion for the Natural
World of Organic Wines! Growing
in Importance
The production of organic and biodynamic
wine is becoming increasingly important,
underpinned at Vinexpo Hong Kong by WOW!
(World of Organic Wines!).
Visitors will have the chance to discover some
highly interesting products on show here for
the first time. A great example is the Spanish
producer Parés Baltà. The environmentally
respectful cultivation of the vines is key to Parés
Baltà’s sense of identity. 100% of their wines
are certified as organic and their vineyards are
biodynamic (by Demeter).
Another highly interesting aspect of their
production is in the vinification. 2,000 years
ago, the Iberians used clay from the Foix
mountains to make amphorae. Today, Parés
Vinexpo’s organisers have come
up with a novel idea to underline
the 20 th anniversary of the show in
Hong Kong.
20 milestone images, marking
the 20 virtues that have helped
position Vinexpo Hong Kong as the
benchmark trade show in Asia-Pacific
make up an inspiring panorama –
a way of thanking everyone who
has been part of this success story
over the past 20 years. The display,
located at the show entrance, traces
the history of an inspiring success
story, depicted as 20 key values
shared universally by Vinexpo, wine
and spirits producers, buyers and
the city of Hong Kong
Baltà takes their legacy to ferment their wines
in amphorae, also made with the clay coming
from their vineyards. A natural wine is thus
made with as little chemical and technological
intervention as possible: both while growing
the grapes and when proceeding them into
wine. Strictly speaking, Natural Wines are
wines produced without adding or removing
anything during the winemaking process.
After harvesting by hand the grapes of the old
Xarel·lo vines, the wine arises from a natural
alcoholic fermentation in the clay amphorae.
The porosity of those amphorae causes a hyper
oxidation and leads all the oxidisable particles
to the bottom. The result is a crystal-clear wine
VINEXPO DAILY / DAY 1 / TUESDAY 29 TH MAY 2018 5

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Diversity, Value and Distribution - The
for Australian Wine Exports to China
Exclusive Interview: David Lucas, Regional General Manager, China,
© Wine Australia
Australian wine exports to China (including Hong Kong and Macau) have increased
by 51% to AU$1.04 bn for the year to March 2018 – a first for exports to a
single country. We asked David Lucas, Regional General Manager, China for Wine
Australia for his thoughts on this incredible growth.
David Lucas
Regional General Manager,
China, Wine Australia
AS THIS YEAR’S
COUNTRY OF HONOUR,
AUSTRALIA HAS 151
EXHIBITORS AT VINEXPO
HONG KONG WHO ARE
SHOWCASING OVER 225
WINE BRANDS
Clearly, the percentage of growth cannot
continue at this level, however we do fully
expect the volume and value growth to
continue at a significant pace, but with
continued emphasis on premiumisation.
Why is Australian wine so popular in this
country?
The overall image of Australian wine in China
is very positive. Australia is an innovative
winemaking country and home to talented
winemakers who are passionate about
crafting premium quality wine. Australia’s
climate, unspoilt land and ancient geology is
so unique it allows us to produce an incredibly
diverse range of wine. Chinese consumers are
increasingly interested in the styles of wines
that are produced in Australia – some are
fruitier, and some a little sweet – these styles
are over and above the more conventional
wine styles that people are familiar with.
This diversity of wine from Australia and the
changing tastes, are now matching very well.
In addition, the reduction of duty on wines from
Australia has made the prices more attractive
and with overall improvements in distribution,
especially within e-commerce, Australian
wines are reaching the consumer more easily,
at prices that are more acceptable and with
styles that suit the changes in taste.
Which Australian wine-growing regions are
the most popular for Chinese buyers, and are
you seeing an emergence of certain lesser
known regions?
Australia is home to 65 wine regions that
produce a diverse range of premium quality
wine. Our world-renowned regions such as
Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra
are the most likely to be recognised, popular
regions for Chinese consumers, but we are
also seeing an increase in exports from many
other regions across Australia. Wines from the
likes of Clare Valley, Heathcote and Hunter
Valley have definitely increased their presence
in China. If you visit the Australian wine stand
(Level 1, Entrance D) you will be able to
discover terrific wines from over 50 regions
across Australia, including some lesser known
regions you may never have had the chance to
experience before.
Why did Wine Australia decide to partner
with Vinexpo Hong Kong this year, and
what are you hoping to achieve from this
partnership?
The landscape of Australian wine has never
looked more exciting. Vinexpo Hong Kong
offers a brilliant opportunity to shine the light
on Australia’s thrilling and diverse wine scene.
China is our number one and fastest growing
export market, so Australia taking the title of
Country of Honour was an easy decision for
us to help strengthen our position in the market,
and enable us to showcase the breadth of fine
Australian wine to some of the most influential
people in the region. Vinexpo itself has a strong
reputation too, and that ensures the people
who visit the exhibition already have a good
sense of the fact that the show will be well
organised and will attract many of the world’s
major wineries.
What can visitors expect to see at the
Australian wine stand?
As this year’s Country of Honour, Australia has
151 exhibitors at Vinexpo Hong Kong who
are showcasing over 225 wine brands. We
are representing 51 of Australia’s wine regions
allowing delegates to discover wines from
some our most renowned regions, to the lesser
known.
On-stand, we are pleased to be presenting a
series of master classes in the Australian Wine
Master Class Area conducted by leading
Australian and international wine experts.
The program will examine a range of topics,
including how different grape varieties have
come to thrive in Australia, regional focuses,
and the qualities of the unique terroir which
have made Australian wines among the
foremost in the world.
All attendees are invited to visit our Australian
Wine Tasting Bar to explore a range of
different Australian wines and experience
intimate tastings with some of our master class
presenters and winemakers.
We have six regional bars representing
Barossa, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Orange,
Yarra Valley and Margaret River will transport
you to some of Australian’s iconic wine regions
Vinexpo Hong Kong 2018 will also see the
global premier of the Aroma Wall – a joint
venture between Wine Australia and the
Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI). The
large scale, interactive instillation represents
some of the key aroma compounds that make
Australian wines so iconic.
We also have an interactive “Explore” wall
to engage with. With two interactive screens,
guests are invited to discover the history of
Australian wine through immersive story-telling,
video and imagery as well as engaging Google
maps to explore our wine regions and wineries.
What special events are being organised?
During the 3-day event we are proud to be
presenting a packed programme of talks and
exclusive tastings that showcase the talent of
Australian winemakers.
We have regional focused themes covering the
Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Yarra Valley and
McLaren Vale. On Vinexpo’s Grape Variety Day,
insights will explore Australian Grenache and
Pinot Noir, emerging varieties and a “coast to
coast” tour of Cabernet Sauvignon winemaking.
“Australia’s First Families of Wine’s” will be
unlocking their cellars to share some of their
most respected and revered wines and share the
stories of success behind these iconic Australian
wines.
Australia’s unique terroirs will also come under
the spotlight with a guide to the Langton’s
Classification system, insights into working
with old and young vines, and a ‘form guide’
of Australia’s best performing and most prized
wines.
We are also presenting two conference sessions:
“Ensuring authenticity and integrity of Australian
wine” – this session focuses on Australia’s worldclass
wine regulatory system and how recent
changes to the regulations have strengthened
Wine Australia’s ability to prevent the export of
‘copycat’ wine brands. This event will provide
an overview of the Australian wine regulatory
system and explain the recent changes to the
export controls.
“Growing Demand for Australian Wine”
analyses the key to Australia’s success in Asia.
The conference will cover the growing affluence
across many parts of Asia; the dramatic growth
in interest in diverse wine styles; and the
increasing importance of addressing consumer
demands and creating exciting opportunities for
wine in Asia. To reflect on consumer trends and
how major Brand Owners and Distributors have
adapted for the future, we have assembled a
panel of experts to discuss what is taking place
in the market and what has already been done
to begin to address rapidly evolving consumer
expectations.
All attendees are welcome to attend The Blend
on May 30 th in the Grand Foyer. As Country of
Honour, Australia will take centre stage with only
Australian wines being presented. There are four
wine bars at The Blend, each with an iconic
Australian theme:
1. Classic country – wines enjoyed in a classic
country setting;
2. Urban - interesting and alternative varieties
found in trendy city wine bars;
3. Coastal wines made for drinking by the
4. Red Centre - Australia’s great red wines
TRADE TALK
PRESS CORNER
Kate Tan
CEO, Grand Vin Pte Ltd.
Tommy Keeling
President,
IWSR Asia Pacific Office
The Name Says It All
Grand Vin was founded by Derek Lee, a pioneer in the wine
industry in Singapore for more than 20 years. We asked Kate Tan,
CEO, Grand Vin Pte Ltd., to firstly tell us his story.
Mr Lee left Seagram and started
Grand Vin Pte Ltd in 1996. He
launched his operation in Singapore
after more than 20 years of service
as a wine specialist with prestigious
brands like Domaine de la Romanée
Conti, Domaines Barons de Rothschild
(Laffite), E. Guigal, and Domaine
Leflaive. Mr Lee is succeeded by his
management team, who combined,
have 50 years of experience behind
them in the wine business. With
an experienced team at the helm,
Grand Vin continues to hold multiple
exclusive wine agencies and grow its
portfolio with prestigious fine wines.
Grand Vin has, in recent years, also
acquired new agencies like Te Mata,
Amelia Park, Domaine Billaud-Simon,
Nittardi and Castello del Terriccio.
Grand Vin’s Mission Statement is to
be the fine wine merchant of choice
in Singapore and rest of Asia with
an extensive but exclusive portfolio of
fine wine brands.
How are sales progressing, and
what product categories are your
“sweet spots” at the moment?
Sales have been growing consistently
over the years for Grand Vin due to
the strength of our portfolio. In recent
years, we have seen a marked
demand in Burgundies, not just for
the renowned names like our crown
gem: Domaine de la Romanée Conti.
There is also an increase in interest
Domaine Faiveley and Domaine
Billaud Simon, together with Domaine
Leflaive. Asia seems to have built an
insatiable appetite for Burgundies!
Australia is this year’s country of
honour. How do you work with
Australian wines?
We represent Amelia Park in our
portfolio and enjoy a wonderful
working relationship with Amelia
Park. There are many popular wines
from Australia but at Grand Vin, we
Tommy Keeling is the President of the
IWSR Asia Pacific Office, based in
north and south east Asian markets. We
asked him to tell us a little more about
his organisation.
The IWSR is the world’s top source of
market intelligence for alcoholic drinks and
maintains an unparalleled database of drinks
brands in over 150 countries, with data
going back over 20 years. We also publish
the highly respected IWSR Magazine, which
is compiled using our data and insights that
our analysts gather in the course of their
What are you primarily looking for at Vinexpo
2018?
I will be at Vinexpo Hong Kong to take part in
the Wine in China conference and I will also
be looking to make new contacts in the drinks
business, as well as being on the lookout for
any new trends and developments. Australian
wines have done well in the region in recent
years, especially in China. They benefit from
having some big companies that can really
invest and develop the category and from
geographic proximity. This will be my first
Vinexpo, so I am really looking forward to it,
as it is one of the premier drinks trade fairs
GLOBAL SPARKLING WINE
CONSUMPTION SET TO GROW
2% PER ANNUM
According to the latest Vinexpo/IWSR report,
sparkling wine sales are forecast to grow by an
average 2% year-on-year to 2021.
The market will be driven predominantly by North
America, but is also showing strong growth in the
UK and Asia-Pacific countries such as Australia
and Japan. Those two countries helped to push
sparkling wine in Asia-Pacific to a total value
of $2.79 billion in 2016 for 9 million cases.
© iStockPhoto
By 2021 that figure is forecast to rise to $3.73
billion (15.8 million cases).
Prosecco will outstrip other major categories such
as Champagne and Cava by 2021 when world
Prosecco consumption is set to reach 40 million
cases. In the UK, the world’s largest sparkling
wine importer, Prosecco is an outstanding
success. Nonetheless, the USA is expected
to show the most growth in consumption of
Prosecco by 2021, while remaining number two
behind the UK.
Champagne’s shift in focus from Europe to
emerging markets looks set to accelerate.
Europe’s share of global Champagne volume
is forecast to have decreased by 4 percentagepoints
on the 2021 horizon, from 80% recorded
in 2016.
Again this year, Vinexpo will give an excellent
cross-section of the sparkling wines market, and
you’ll find some of the highlights in the next
Traditional or Submarine?
Champagne Drappier has announced the
release of two products that will allow consumers
to directly compare its wines matured in seawater
compared with the traditional wine cellar.
In June 2015, the Champagne house submerged
a number of its bottles in the sea, off the coast of
Brest, in Brittany. The project, called “Immersion”,
was inspired by the seas that covered
Champagne 155 million years ago, depositing
billions of small shells that were later transformed
into the region’s acclaimed Jurassic kimmeridgian
limestone. Underwater, the bottles were kept at
the same temperature and light level as those
stored in Drappier’s cellars. The wine was stored
at a depth equal to the pressure that compresses
gas in the bottle. Available in selected retail stores
in the UK, France, Italy and Japan, Drappier has
released a giftbox of two bottles, containing
one bottle aged under water, the other in its
cellars.
CHAMPAGNE
IMMERSED
IN THE ATLANTIC
Housed in a wooden box, complete with ink
illustrations by the house’s creative director,
Charline Drappier, the Immersion series offers
a unique tasting experience that provides the
chance to compare different ageing conditions.
Each “immersed bottle” is delicately packaged
so that the shells, which grew on the bottle as it
aged, are not damaged
A Touch of French Sparkle
Jaillance, France’s leading producer of AOC sparkling wines –
festive, friendly and fun
The Rhône Valley – one of the most
beautiful regions in France and home to
Jaillance, a winery based on the core
values of respect for nature and the quest
for quality. The Jaillance Winery was
founded in 1950 in the village of Die, by
a group of passionate, forward-looking
winemakers who saw cooperation as
a means to consolidate their expertise
and achieve nationwide recognition
for their sparkling wines. Jaillance have
since expanded into Bordeaux and the
Loire Valley, and are gradually setting a
gold standard for terroir-driven French
sparkling wines.
Jaillance is France’s leading producer of
several AOC sparkling wines, including
Clairette de Die, Crémant de Die,
Crémant de Bordeaux, Crémant de Loire,
Vouvray and Saumur. The company’s
premium-quality sparkling AOC wines
regularly win awards in the world’s most
prestigious competitions. With a unique
combination of experience and skill,
Jaillance know how to make their terroirs
sparkle!
The Jaillance range is full and varied,
every wine specifically adapted to suit
its chosen market. The wines reflect the
individual character of each region, while
the company’s name and reputation give
the consumer a guarantee of consistent
high quality. The Jaillance brand –
festive, friendly and fun!
QUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
For decades, Jaillance have been
committed to a policy of quality and
sustainability in a number of key
areas. People come first, and here
Jaillance pledge to develop individual
and collective skills; then comes land
and the importance of protecting the
environment and our natural resources;
and finally, economic sustainability,
including creating and sharing value and
maintaining high performance standards.
With the help and support of their
members, Jaillance are constantly
researching new ways to improve
sustainability processes in the vineyard
and winery. Because waste prevention,
and finding new waste treatment and
recovery solutions, ultimately benefits
everyone - not least the region’s
winegrowers.
INNOVATIONS AND FUTURE
DEVELOPMENT
Jaillance aspire to give greater
recognition to the work of their members
and to respond quickly to the needs of
customers, both in France and abroad.
This is one of the main reasons why
significant investments have been made
in the Die and Bordeaux production sites
over the last three years.
The same reasoning lies behind Jaillance’s
recent investments in the Loire. Their new
AOC terroirs, Crémant de Loire, Saumur
and Vouvray, are a natural complement
to the existing Jaillance range – fresh,
elegant Loire wines, painting a true
picture of the Loire’s most iconic grape
varietals: Chenin, Cabernet Franc and
Grolleau.
For the Jaillance brand, innovation is
always at the top of the agenda. This
translates as a focus on terroir (or more
precisely on individual plot), on our
members and their exemplary work as
they develop distinctive new products,
on biodynamic and estate wines, single
vineyard wines and the new Clairette
Rosé, on tailoring our organic products
to meet the needs of French and
international markets, and on improving
competitiveness.
With its precise focus on quality,
innovation and sustainability, Jaillance is
looking to consolidate the brand across
all distribution channels. The Jaillance
brand already accounts for 75% of
total volume sales across the group,
and the ongoing strategy is to continue
positioning it in the premium segment,
developing it as a distinctive, top quality
product. Meanwhile the goal is also to
broaden the range of Jaillance products
across other appellations, to increase
share for Brut, and to double export
market share to 20%
Australian Wine Exports Booming
Over AU$1bn to China over past year – a first!
Australian wine exports continue to
set records, with a new high for the
average value of bottled wine exports of
AU$5.74 per litre and exports to China
(including Hong Kong and Macau)
increasing by 51% for the year to March
2018 to reach AU$1.04 billion – a first
for Australian wine exports to a single
country.
The 12 months to March saw exports
increase by 16% in value to reach
AU$2.65 billion – the highest value in
a decade – and volume also increased
by 10% to a near-record level of 844
million litres or 94 million 9-litre case
equivalents.
The high quality of Australian wine plus
historically low Northern Hemisphere
harvests are driving the demand for
Australian wine exported in bulk
containers, leading to growth in both
volume, which grew by 10% to 462
million litres, and the total value of
exported bulk wine, which grew by
19% to AU$486 million.
Wine Australia CEO, Andreas Clark
said, “Excellent vintage conditions in
Australia would sustain the sector’s
growth as the relatively cool, dry summer
had produced high-quality grapes
and winemakers are excited about the
exceptional quality of the 2018 vintage
wines”.
AU$50 MILLION PACKAGE
– NEW AND BIGGER
OPPORTUNITIES
The Australian Government’s AU$50
million Export and Regional Wine
Support Package (the AU$50m
Package) is an exciting, one–off
allocation of AU$50 million, which
aims to grow the Australian wine
sector by showcasing the nation’s wine
tourism offering and driving demand for
Australian wine exports.
With the support of the Australian
Government’s AU$50 million Export
and Regional Wine Support Package,
Australia’s presence at Vinexpo Hong
Kong, is bigger, bolder and better than
ever before.
POPULAR VARIETIES OF
AUSTRALIAN WINE IN CHINA
(INCLUDING HONG KONG
AND MACAU)
Sweeter wines and white wine are
becoming more popular in China. The
most popular varieties of Australian
wine exported into China are
Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Chardonnay and Grenache.
“Red wine resonates strongly in the
China market, and it is over 90% of
our exports”, said Clark, adding, “The
success we have had is because we
have really worked hard in the market.”
AUSTRALIA’S 65 WINE
REGIONS
When it comes to regions, Australian
wine used to be comparatively
straightforward, for the consumer at
least. There were the classic regions
that most had heard of – Coonawarra,
the Barossa, Clare Valley, Margaret
River etc. – and there were a few others
that the more informed were aware
of; Geelong, the Yarra Valley and
Padthaway for example.
In the past few years, however,
awareness of Australia’s collection
of distinct wine regions has grown
phenomenally. There are now 65
recognised Australian wine regions,
areas that range from Tasmania and the
Adelaide Hills to the Canberra District
right out to Western Australian centres
including Manjimup and the Swan
River. This proliferation has been caused
in-part by a greater understanding of
regions and Australian terroir coupled
with the re-emergence of regions that
had fallen from view.
VARIETY VARIATION
Because of Australia’s vast land,
winemakers are able to showcase
wide-ranging grape varieties and styles
across many diverse regions.
It’s not just Australian wine regions that
have proliferated of late; the collection
of grape varieties has also expanded
in tandem with the styles of wine
that are being produced. Through a
combination of winemakers’ desire to
try new things, an increased awareness
of the vineyards they are working with
and rising environmental changes,
new varieties are popping up across
Australia, often with spectacular results.
A decade ago, were you to go in
search of an Australian Nebbiolo, Nero
d’Avola or Assyrtiko, your search may
have been long and ultimately fruitless.
Today all these wines are available
in Australia and their quality is turning
heads
Renowned Australian winemaker Philip Shaw is back
Shaw’s search for an Australian region capable of
making classic wines with elegance, depth and bright
fruit came to rest in 1988 when he discovered the
undulating hills of the high-altitude, cool-climate region
of Orange. Philip Shaw Wines are sourced entirely from
Shaw’s 47 hectare Koomooloo Vineyard. Purchased in
1988 and planted in 1989 on red loam over limestone,
this cool climate vineyard rises to an altitude of 900m.
This immaculately tended vineyard has already
produced the ”Prix D’Excellence” Chardonnay at the
1998 Vinexpo in Bordeaux and the “Best Red Wine” at
the 2002 National Wine Show in Canberra. The fruit
from Koomooloo has clearly defined varietal character
that displays elegance, power, and length.
Hong Kong? We put the question to Anthony Lau, Executive Director, Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Hong Kong Tourism Board
With its strategic location, safe and business friendly
environment, visa-free policy for visitors from over 170
countries and regions, and superb aviation connectivity
with the region’s key financial markets, Hong Kong is
recognised as the world’s premier Meetings, Incentive,
Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) destination and
business hub of Asia. Last year, we welcomed close to
2-million MICE visitors to Hong Kong, representing a 2%
increase from the previous year.
This year is the 20th anniversary of Vinexpo in Hong
Kong. What are your thoughts on this show?
With regards to the wine and spirits business, Hong Kong
was the first duty-free wine port among major economies
when all wine duties were removed in 2008, and since
then, we have managed to maintain our position as one
of the largest wine auction centres in the world. This year
marks the 20th anniversary of Vinexpo. Since its inception
in 1998, the premier wine and spirits event has become
one of the most influential trade exhibitions in Asia-Pacific.
The HKTB is pleased to offer our support again this year
as an event partner on this remarkable occasion. We
specially built a “Hong Kong Tea House” booth for all
visitors attending the event to taste some of the city’s
traditional treats, including egg tarts and milk tea, and to
discover some of the diverse authentic experiences Hong
Kong has to offer.
What can we expect in the coming year, or what could
change the face of tourism here?
Before the end of this year, we will see the completion and
commencement of operations of two major infrastructure
projects – the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge and
the Express Rail Link Hong Kong Section – which will put
Hong Kong within one hour’s reach of the fast-developing
Greater Bay Area and connected with the 20,000 kmlong
national high-speed rail network, which covers most
major mainland cities. These exciting developments will
further strengthen Hong Kong’s unrivalled position as
the super-connector to the high-growth Mainland China
market and reinforce the city’s edge as the premier
business hub in Asia. The HKTB will continue to build on
Hong Kong’s strengths and work closely with our trade
partners to fuel the further growth of the MICE business
of Hong Kong.
