NEWS
MARTIN TRUEX DOES THE CAT WALK WITH
A YOUNG FAN DURING THE NINTH ANNUAL
CATWALK FOR A CAUSE FUND RAISER
For one night, the small Statesville
Airport hangar transformed
into a whimsical “Midsummer
Night’s Dream”-themed wonderland
for the ninth annual Catwalk for a
Cause event. Drivers and industry personnel
from different teams and companies
came together to raise money and support
for childhood and ovarian cancer through
the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation.
And for one magical, twinkly light-filled
night, racing and points weren’t the focus
among these drivers. Rather, it was the
young cancer patients walking down the
runway.
“When we first started there were 50
people and we raised $7,000. And it was
small – we had no idea it was ever going to
get this big,” said Sherry Pollex, longtime
girlfriend of Martin Truex Jr., co-founder of
the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and ovarian
cancer survivor. “There’s not anything
else like this in the NASCAR community,
where we have drivers that come together
as a community and walk with the kids
and people see where their money is going
while they’re sitting in the audience. I think
it’s important for the donors to be a part of
that and this event is just all about the kids
and it’s their night to show and it’s incredible
to see it grow.”
Several drivers and their wives walked —
in some cases, danced — with current and
former childhood cancer patients down the
runway, as country singer Cassadee Pope
opened and closed the show.
There was first-time runway walker Kyle
Busch with his enthusiastic dancing, Noah
Gragson rocking a flower crown during
the “Coachella” set, and Clint Bowyer and
wife, Lorra, with a choreographed fingerpointing
move upon exiting the stage. Aric
Almirola, Darrell Wallace Jr., Todd Gilliland
and Ty Dillon also walked the catwalk with
patients.
At the end of the show, the children
— called Catwalk heroes — took the
now-darkened runway once more wearing
glowing wings and head pieces. The crowd
stood in applause as the patients held up
signs depicting their dreams and aspirations,
with “Won’t Back Down” playing in
the background.
The moments were sweet, rousing and
impactful, especially for drivers like Bowyer
with children of their own.
“If you have a family and you have kids
and you see and you meet these kids …
that’s just when it really rings home,” he
said. “You meet their parents, siblings …
and you’re just like, ‘My gosh, this is reality,
this could happen, this does happen.’ And
then you come to an event like this and you
see the awareness, you see the money that
it generates, to support the cause, to support
the families, to support the education,
to support the research, the development,
all those things that go toward not having
those kids on that stage anymore. That’s
the reason that this thing just keeps getting
bigger and bigger and bigger.
“It’ll tug at your heartstrings. … To see
them enjoying their moment and shining on
the stage and enjoying it and embracing
it — the pride and excitement in their eyes,
that’s the coolest thing about this event.”
After the show concluded, Truex Jr.
and Pollex came back onstage again to
16 // TJS 2018

NEWS
present Novant Health with a $1.2 million
check that will go toward the formation of
the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation Children’s
Emergency Department in Huntersville,
North Carolina, and the SherryStrong
Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic in
Charlotte, North Carolina. Pollex received
her own cancer treatment through Novant,
so it’s a donation that is especially personal
for the couple, Truex said.
“I get chills when I think about it,” Truex
said of the donation. “To be able to help
the community here right in North Carolina
where we live, to see the impact that it’s
going to have. The emergency unit for the
kids is going to be amazing. And then the
integrative clinic in Charlotte that Sherry’s
really leading up is going to be great because
that was such a big part of her treatment
and what she does to help herself
heal. It’s such a big part of what’s made
her healthy and being able to live life since
she’s gotten diagnosed with cancer. That’s
really, really near and dear to her heart.
“For both of us, these are the things that
really matter to us and it’s awesome that
we’ve been able to raise enough money
to make an impact this big and we’re very,
very proud of it.”
And one point during the announcement
with Novant, Truex looked at Pollex and
said of Novant, “You saved Sherry’s life.”
“That’s where I had all my cancer
treatments, that’s where my doctor is, my
oncologist and my nurses are all there,”
Pollex said. “So they’ve been an integral
part of my whole cancer journey. … I can’t
believe my name is going to be on a cancer
clinic. But it’s just so cool to be a part of
that and know that I can help teach other
cancer patients all the integrative therapies
that I used while I was going through my
treatment because they helped me tremendously
get through my treatment and have
helped with life after cancer.”
Life after cancer for Pollex this year has
been one of much-needed self-care. And
she feels great, she said.
“I’m on a new maintenance drug that I
started a couple months ago,” she said.
“So far, I haven’t had any crazy side effects
or anything, I feel great. I just have taken a
little time for myself and to spend time with
my family, so I haven’t been traveling as
much. … I’ve been on the road for 17 years
so it’s really nice to just take a break and be
able to enjoy my life. The fans all think I’m
not there because I’m not feeling well, but I
actually feel great, so it’s been really nice.”
The time away from the track has allowed
her to focus on the Martin Truex
Jr. Foundation — and work to make the
impact on the community even bigger.
“I’ve been putting a lot of my efforts
toward the new integrative cancer clinic and
toward the pediatric emergency center,” she
said. “I’ve also been working with (Levine
Cancer Institute) doing some things with the
gynecological support system that they have
there for patients like myself that have been
diagnosed with ovarian or cervical cancer. …
“We’ve kind of got our hands in a little
bit of everything in the community and it’s
allowed me to have more time to spend on
that.”
SCHNEIDER
CHOOSES SKYBITZ
Schneider, a provider of transportation and
logistics services, has teamed up with SkyBitz
to implement Schneider’s third-generation
trailer and container tracking system.
SkyBitz is a provider of best-fit vehicle and
asset tracking solutions that give companies
total visibility into their fleets and cargo without
increasing overhead.
“Schneider is committed to providing a
differentiated driver experience and eliminating
job irritants,” said Shaleen Devgun, executive
vice president and chief information officer at
Schneider. “This technology enables drivers
to efficiently locate an available empty trailer
or container with pinpoint accuracy using
their mobile devices, which saves a significant
amount of time.”
As part of its third-generation solution, Devgun
said Schneider has leveraged the SkyBitz
Falcon GXT5002C, a solar-powered, GPSbased
asset management device that improves
asset utilization and cargo visibility.
The Falcon GXT5002C provides reporting on
several critical data points, including arrival and
departure times, inner yard movements, idle
durations, and cargo loaded or unloaded events
in near real time.
“Schneider wanted a high-quality trailer
and container tracking solution that could be
implemented quickly and efficiently,” said Henry
Popplewell, SkyBitz president. “SkyBitz designs
its trailer, container, and asset tracking solutions
for reliability, simple installation, and an overall
lower cost of ownership. These tools give shippers
more ways to ensure they’re delivering the
highest quality service to every customer.”
FULL-STABILITY
BECOMING NORM
How rapidly is full-stability technology becoming
the norm?
In the past year, Bendix has delivered as
many units of its Bendix ESP Electronic Stability
Program — about 100,000 — as it did in the
first six years of the system’s existence. That’s
pushed the total lifetime deliveries of Bendix
ESP full stability to more than 600,000, says the
safety technology company.
“Full-stability technology proves its value to
fleets and drivers every day, and its effectiveness
at improving highway safety is reflected in
both the technology’s selection as the stability
system of choice for the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stability
mandate, and in the increasing adoption rates
industrywide — even before that rule took effect
last year,” said Scott Burkhart, Bendix vice
president of sales, marketing, and business
development.
“For 13 years, Bendix ESP has helped
make commercial vehicles safer, mitigated
rollover and loss-of-control incidents, provided
return-on-investment, and evolved into a critical
foundational technology of more complex,
integrated safety systems, including collision
mitigation.”
Bendix ESP was the first widely available
full-stability system for commercial vehicles in
North America when it was launched in 2005,
and the company is currently conducting its
18th year of winter testing on the system.
Full-stability systems, also called ESC
(Electronic Stability Control) technology, include
more sensors than stand-alone antilock braking
systems (ABS) or roll-only technology, known
as RSC or roll stability control. This enables
the system to address both roll and directional
stability, more quickly recognizing factors that
36 // TJS 2018

TRUCKINGNEWS
could lead to vehicle rollovers or loss of control.
Full-stability systems can also utilize
automatic brake interventions involving the
steer, drive, and trailer axles — where roll-only
systems typically apply the brakes on only the
drive and trailer axles.
Bendix’s flagship integrated collision mitigation
technology, Bendix Wingman Fusion, as
well as Bendix Wingman Advanced, a collision
mitigation technology, both rely on the underlying
technology of Bendix ESP, so increased
adoption of these systems has also boosted
full-stability delivery, Bendix spokesmen said.
OPERATION SAFE
DRIVER
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s
Operation Safe Driver Week will take place
July 15-21.
Traffic safety personnel will be on the lookout
for unsafe driving behaviors by commercial motor
vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers.
Unsafe driver behaviors by CMV and
passenger vehicle drivers continue to be the
leading cause of crashes, said a CVSA news
release, adding that the Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration’s “Large Truck Crash
Causation Study” cites driver behavior as the
critical reason for more than 88 percent of large
truck crashes and 93 percent of passenger
38 // TJS 2018

TRUCKINGNEWS
vehicle crashes.
Examples of dangerous driving behaviors
that enforcement personnel will be tracking
throughout Operation Safe Driver Week are
speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure
to use a seatbelt while operating a CMV or
in a passenger vehicle, following too closely,
improper lane change, and failure to obey
traffic control devices. (Montana and Arizona
don’t have anti texting-while-driving laws while
Missouri bans the behavior for drivers 21 and
younger.)
CVSA’s Operation
Safe Driver Program
was created to help to
reduce the number of
crashes, deaths and
injuries involving large
trucks, buses and
passenger vehicles because
of unsafe driving
behaviors. During the
designated week there will be increased CMV
and passenger vehicle traffic enforcement.
CVSA sponsors the week of enforcement
in partnership with the FMSCA and with the
support of industry and transportation safety
organizations.
The focus is on improving the behavior of all
drivers operating in an unsafe manner — either
in or around CMVs — through educational and
traffic enforcement strategies.
MACK TRUCKS VEHICLE UPDATES
DONE REMOTELY
Mack Trucks continues to expand
its extensive suite of uptime
services with the rollout of Mack
Over The Air, which enables
remote software updates for powertrain
components and vehicle parameters for
Mack trucks equipped with Mack 2017 or
newer engines.
Mack gave an update of this rollout
at the American Trucking Associations’
Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC)
annual meeting March 5-8 at the Georgia
World Congress Center here.
“Mack Over The Air enables customers
to ensure their trucks are operating at
an optimal level without disrupting their
schedules in today’s hypercompetitive
just-in-time economy,” said David Pardue,
vice president of connected vehicles and
uptime services for Mack Trucks. “This is
just the latest step in our journey to provide
industry-leading uptime for our customers.”
Mack Over the Air is the newest offering
in Mack Connect, an uptime and
productivity solution that turns data from
trucks, drivers and the service process
into insights to help
customers run their
businesses more
effectively. Mack
Connect combines
technology like Mack
GuardDog Connect
integrated telematics
and the Mack ASIST
service management
system with the
human expertise of
Mack OneCall uptime
agents in Mack’s 24/7
Uptime Center to
keep customer trucks
where they should be
— on the job generating
revenue.
Mack Over The Air
is powered by GuardDog Connect, which
also provides proactive monitoring and
repair planning for 65,000 in-service Mack
trucks. Mack Over The Air uses GuardDog
Connect, standard on all Mack models
with Mack engines, to deliver software and
parameter updates directly to customers’
trucks. Mack OneCall uptime agents in
Mack’s 24/7 Uptime Center work with customers
to schedule the updates based on
when it works best for their operations.
TECH
INTEGRATING DATA
Since going live in October 2017, 20
customers and about 3,500 vehicles have
benefited from Mack Over The Air. Mack
has performed more than 380 updates,
saving customers more than 500 days of
downtime and decreasing the time needed
to do a software update from days to
minutes, according to a Mack Trucks news
release.
Mack customer Brooklyn Ready Mix in
Brooklyn, New York, updated engine and
aftertreatment software on all 10 of the
company’s concrete mixers during a single
day. Updates were completed as the trucks
were in between jobs or at the depot being
refilled, allowing the concrete supplier to
continue regular operations
while optimizing
the performance of its
trucks.
“The Mack Over The
Air program is fantastic
because it greatly
reduced the time we
typically spend on
software updates,” said
Manny Paradiso, plant
supervisor for Brooklyn
Ready Mix. “Sometimes
it would take us
up to four days. These
updates allowed us to
complete them in about a half-hour’s time.
That’s a huge difference and enables us to
better keep our trucks onsite, doing what
they need to do to get the job done.”
Mack Over The Air is provided at no
charge during the initial two-year base
engine warranty, with customers having
the option to extend the service after two
years. Mack Over The Air is also included
with Mack’s extended engine coverage
plans. New uptime contract subscriptions
include Over The Air features, including
two customer-initiated parameter updates
per vehicle per year.
Mack Over The Air is just one of several
recent investments Mack has made in
technology, resources and services to
improve uptime for customers. Those
investments also include a more than 50
percent increase in Mack OneCall staffing
in Mack’s Uptime Center in Greensboro,
North Carolina; over $2.5 million invested
in technology for improved vehicle data
and analytics; monitoring triple the number
of codes on trucks; and introducing mobile
communication capabilities for uptime services
via the app for Mack ASIST, Mack’s
Web-based service management system.
Another part of Mack’s uptime offerings
are 117 Mack Certified Uptime Centers
— dealer shops that have met stringent
requirements to better improve service and
help keep customers’ trucks up and running.
By routing vehicles needing shorter
repairs to reserved “uptime bays,” Certified
Uptime Centers have been able to streamline
their processes, resulting in a 24 percent
improvement in shop efficiency and a
21 percent reduction in repair times.
