Speaking of the testing rig Shaftec says: “This state of the art diagnostic equipment tests assistance, speed and angle sensors during a ‘real world’ simulation with visual readouts on the screen. Each unit has a locating position on the rig: pumps on the left, racks on the front and column drives on the right. Here, they are securely located allowing the simulation to occur and test that the parts work as they should in a car being driven. Torque sensors and steering angles can be checked, fault codes stored in the ECU can be cleared and it can also assess the assistance the rack is giving at different speeds.” Bilstein is a long-term player in the UK aftermarket and it has given its range a parts-numbers boost across its service parts, springs and shock absorber spare parts lines. “In the first half of 2018 Bilstein introduced roughly 90 additional parts numbers for its spring range, retaining its position as one of the key component makers in the field of coil springs for cars. With an extra 50 new applications also added for the universal shock absorber range, we have also expanded their market coverage in the universal spare part shock absorber segment,” a company spokesman says. “Gas pressure technology of the Bilstein universal spare part shock absorber makes a tangible improvement to driving stability and overall safety, especially in older models that have covered many miles. The shock absorber is designed to offer a longer life even when subjected to heavy-duty use.” Bilstein’s service parts range covers bearings, mountings, bump stops and dust tubes, and are made to match the relevant shock absorber’s specifications. Its springs are made to OE quality, as a company spokesman explains: “The coil springs for the Mercedes-Benz M- Class (W163 and W164) have been produced using the latest technical designs such as pigtail ends, mini-block form or side-load design springs. The base material (chrome vanadium or chrome silicon steel) is repeatedly hot-set after the forming process to avoid later height losses. A special shot-blasting technique is used to shot-peen the springs which then have a flexible coating of epoxy powder applied for a long and active service life.” If proof was need about just how complicated and part number-riddled the steering aftermarket is, First Line’s range, which was introduced in 1992 now has 8500 references.
