HOME PROFESSIONALS
Good gardens take time
Enjoying, and being proud of, your
yard is one of the small pleasures in life.
Whether it is an attractive place to relax
in, a productive place full of fruit trees, or
a little of both, the right trees in the right
place are key to achieving satisfaction.
Whether establishing a new yard or
revamping an existing one, there are many
considerations when it comes to the trees
you chose to plant. Perhaps the most
important is ground preparation – making
sure the area is sprayed and weed-free.
Once planted, mulch well, 3 to 4 inches
deep and a metre or so around the tree.
This will give the roots ample opportunity
to take hold. Feather back the mulch from
the tree stem.
There is a plethora of trees to choose to
plant in your yard, depending on what you
want from them - whether pittosporums,
which are not too demanding and are
excellent hedge and screening plants,
or trees such as claret ash, or smaller
ornamental trees such as Japanese maples
which add splashes of beautiful colour to
your garden.
Visiting your local nursery can be
eye-opening. Southern Woods Plant
Nursery (www.southernwoods.co.nz), on
Robinsons Road near Templeton is a one
stop shop for expert advice, a wide range of
quality gardening tools, and a vast selection
of trees and plants, practically everything
you will ever need.
A visit to Southern Woods is an
experience. There is a winter pruning
session in July (contact them for details).
“With pruning you are trying to set up the
tree’s structure for the future,” says Retail
Manager Chris Smith. Proper pruning is
essential for the health and productivity
of any tree. The friendly, expert staff at
Southern Woods are always happy to offer
tips and advice on pruning, or any other
garden related matter.
With smaller sections becoming popular,
so are dwarf trees, trees bred to be smaller
and more compact. These kinds of trees are
perfect if space is an issue, but you want the
aesthetic and benefits of beautiful trees.
Another space-saving technique is
espalier – pruning and tying tree branches
to a frame, or to wire flat against a fence or
wall. As well as taking up less space, these
can be quite decorative, and if fruit trees,
just as productive.
“Good gardens take time,” Chris says.
Sometimes it is preferable to forgo fruit
production on newly planted trees to let
them establish a good root system, and
a great shape with proper pruning. The
long-term results, whether fruit, colour, or
functionality are always worth the time and
effort put in.
Enjoying, and being
proud of, your yard
is one of the small
pleasures in life.
