A SCULPTURE in memory
of well known Sumner father
and son Paul and Sam Zarifeh
who died within three weeks of
each other will be unveiled on
Sunday.
Sam, 27, died tragically in
December after falling from a
raft on the Landsborough River,
inland from Haast – three weeks
after his father Paul, 60, was
claimed by pancreatic cancer.
Paul co-founded the
Canterbury Wetsuit Company
in 1987, which later became
Seventhwave Wetsuits.
Sam was a teacher and
boarding master at Christchurch
Boys’ High School.
On Sunday, a sculpture will
be unveiled on the Esplanade in
Sumner.
It was designed and
constructed by Sumner
stonemason Mark Robberds
after Paul Zarifeh’s widow Julie
approached him about the idea.
“It is hard to believe seven
months has passed by since the
losses of our beloved Zarifeh
menfolk, Paul and Sam,” Mrs
Zarifeh said.
“As a family we continue
to be immensely grateful for
the outpouring of community
support and kindness, and are
thrilled to now be able to share
this memorial as a focal point of
remembrance.”
The stone sculpture will be
a place to sit and reflect “and
maybe also check the surf,” Mr
Robberds said.
“The stones themselves
are significant as they were
foundation stones from a
Christchurch building.
“In many ways Paul Zarifeh
provided a foundation for many
surfers in Christchurch through
his business and through his
support of young competitive
surfers.”
Stonemason Ben West and
Sumner landscape architect
Cameron Rennie helped Mr
Robberds with the project.
To reflect the family’s love
of the outdoors, a number of
special stones from around the
South Island – including one
that represents Paul’s Palestinian
WORK ON a mega centre in
Hornby may not now start for at
least another two years.
The city council revealed on
Friday more consultation may
be needed for the $35.7 million
facility after a hearings panel
recommended Denton Park not
be the site. If Denton Park was
given the nod, work was likely to
have started this year.
Greater Hornby Residents Association
chairman Marc Duff
said he was “surprised” that the
decision was made prior to the
official Denton Park decision
during a meeting set for July 6.
City councillor Vicki Buck
said consultation was needed to
avoid a judicial review, which
could slow down the process by
another two to three years.
An additional $450,000 was
budgeted for the two years work.
If a new location is chosen
within the next financial year,
the funding could be brought
forward by a year, Cr Buck said.
Twice a year we clear the Community Fund collection boxes at
