THE STAR MEDIA Home &
best yet.
Celebrating its 20th year of
supporting local businesses,
the event has an extra special
flavour this time around with a
unique tasting corner.
Event manager Vanessa Fleming
is super-enthused about the
new addition, which reflects the
importance of leisure in people’s
lives these days.
“There will be a wide range
of food and drink products to
sample, which people can then
go home and recreate in their
own kitchens,” she says.
And with the latest in kitchen
innovations and products on
display, it’s a chance to get creative
in all aspects of life.
Said Star Media chief executive
Steve McCaughan: “I am
very excited about the new elements
we have introduced with
the addition of our free taste
section, new glossy Home and
Leisure magazine, plus fantastic
prizes to be won.”
Seminars are held throughout
each of the three days and
INVESTIGATIONS are under
way to see if women-only
sessions can be reinstated at
certain Christchurch pools so
those from other cultures feel
comfortable swimming in them.
The city council’s multicultural
subcommittee asked staff to look
into the potential of offering
women-only swimming sessions
at particular times.
feature everything from starting
a renovation through to the
design and decoration stage.
A hot topic this year is water,
with multiple water filtration
systems being exhibited at the
show, along with spa pools
and the best in heating technology.
“This show is designed to
inspire people with the latest in
home and lifestyle technology.”
sports and events Nigel Cox said
staff were currently
working to reinstate
those opportunities
post-earthquake.
“Staff will work with
Christchurch Resettlement
Services to
consider opportunities
for this.”
It was yet to be determined
what pools
it could happen at and when, he
said.
Services general manager
Shirley Wright said
Muslim women generally
could not swim in public
pools because of their religion,
while other women
did not feel comfortable
doing so. She said ideally
the group wanted a particular
pool set aside for
single sex use so they could
access it all the time, provided it
did not disrupt other swimmers.
Women-only swimming sessions floated
Shirley Wright
The group runs “invaluable”
weekly sessions at privatelyowned
AquaGym because they
were forced from QE II after the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
“But they would love to do it
every day,” she said. “It would be
great if we could support these
women to be swimming and
enjoying the water.”
City councillor and subcommittee
member Anne Galloway
said as ratepayers something
should be provided for them.
Most dangerous
intersections upgrade
Safety improvements are on the
way for two of the city’s most
dangerous intersections. The city
council’s Long Term Plan earmarked
$1.2 million to upgrade the
Clarence St and Blenheim Rd intersection
between 2021 and 2023. It
also allocated $356,000 to upgrade
the Clarence St and Riccarton Rd
intersection between 2020 and
2022. The city council and New
Zealand Transport Agency ranked
the Clarence St and Riccarton
Rd intersection the sixth most dangerous
in the city last year, while
Clarence St and Blenheim Rd was
ranked 10th. Safety improvements
have also been confirmed for the
Ilam, Middleton and Riccarton
Rds intersection – the fourth most
dangerous – in the upcoming
financial year.
St Albans Park work
delayed, over budget
Upgrades to St Albans Park may
not be complete until early next
year and will cost $160,000 more
than expected. The cost of the project
has increased to $2.1 million.
Wet weather has pushed the completion
date out to late December
or early January.
Timeball set to drop
