LOCOMOTIVE FUEL PERFORMANCE RECORDS
Ofice of Fuel Agent, St. Louis
URING the month of June we
had a decrease in both freight
and switch performance as
compared to June last year. The
freight performance decreasing from
148 pounds per 1,000 gross ton miles
June last year to 143 pounds per 1,000
gross ton miles this year, a decrease
of 3.38 per cent. The average train
haul decreased from 1,512 to 1,406. In
switch service the pounds per switch
locomotive mile was 134 pounds June
this year compared to 137 pounds
June last year, a decrease of 2.19 per
cent. This is the first month in which
we have had a decrease in switch
performance since February, each
month this year compared to com-
parative months last year. In passen-
ger service there was a slight in-
crease in the performance for the first
time this year, in fact this is the first
increase in passenger service since
July 1930 compared to July 1929. June
performance was 14.3 as compared to
14.2, June last year, an increase
slightly less than 1 per cent. The
Eastern division had a decrease of
6.06 per cent, Southern and Texas
Lines equaling their performance
of last year and balance of the di-
visions having increases ranging from
2 per cent to 13 per cent.
As usual during the summer months
special effort is made by all concerned
to make a certain goal in fuel per-
formance, each class of service a
lower unit of consumption in freight
service than any previous record, and
in passenger and switch service 2s
low a performance as we can reason-
ably expect under the conditions. The
management has given us the goal for
this summer a record low perform-
ance, freight service of 135 pounds
per 1,000 gross ton miles, in passen-
ger service 13.5 pounds per car mile
and switch service 130 pounds per
switch locon~otive mile. Based on the
performance of June we will all have
to pet our shoulders to the wheel to
reach the above standards, which are
not impossible and with each one do-
ing his "Bit" we will make a record
this summer of which we will be
proud.
