Belgian Scouts on
hall-build mission
SIVENATHI GOSA
A COMMUNITY church in Bhisho is expecting
“Les Scouts” from Brussels today who will be
visiting and staying in the Eastern Cape until
July 20.
Member of the Community Church Group
Lunga Nqini said the main reason for the visit
was that the Scouts would be building a Scouts
community hall in Frankfurt.
“Their initial idea was to build a crèche for the
community but they were denied permission by
the municipality so they have decided to build a
hall that will be used by the Scouts and
community members,” Nqini said.
Member of the Les Scouts Simon de Meeûs
said they had 11 members, ranging from 16 to 18
years old, and four supervisors of 22 to 24 years
of age.
“The purpose of the project is to travel around
the world, to meet people and to broaden our
social experiences. In Belgium, Scouts usually go
to “camp” – as we use to call it – during the
month of July. The main rule of our scouts is to
help one another,” De Meeûs said.
He said Scouting provided young people with
opportunities to participate in programmes,
events, activities and projects that contribute to
their growth as active citizens. Through these
initiatives, young people became agents of
positive change who inspire others to take
action.
“The first week will be for the project itself,
followed by a week and a half where we visit the
country and meet the population. During the last
week, we can continue to visit the country with a
more relaxed perspective.”
Nqini said that after they had completed
building the hall, they were planning to show the
visitors the rest of the province.
“Hopefully if there are enough funds, we are
planning on showing our visitors the beautiful
province which is the Eastern Cape,” Nqini said.
