handicrafts ; (h) sell<strong>in</strong>g and buy<strong>in</strong>g, commerce,<br />

agriculture, the breed<strong>in</strong>g of cattle ; (i) biography.<br />

II. Beligious studies help the soul <strong>in</strong> its struggle<br />

towards the other world. <strong>The</strong>y are five—revelation,<br />

explanation, tradition, law, and illum<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

III. PHILOSOPHICA.L SCIENCES are of four sorts— pro-<br />

paedeutics, logic, physics, theology.<br />

A. Pkopaedeutics consist of arithmetic, geometry,<br />

astronomy, music.<br />

B. Logic is of two k<strong>in</strong>ds : (a) analytica, the art<br />

of apprehend<strong>in</strong>g; (b) rhetorica, or the art<br />

of those (sophists) who <strong>in</strong> theoriz<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

argu<strong>in</strong>g would lead one <strong>in</strong>to error.<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> Isagoge aims at estabhsh<strong>in</strong>g a clear under-<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g of the six words employed <strong>in</strong> philosophical<br />

propositions : <strong>in</strong>dividual, species, genus, essential,<br />

endur<strong>in</strong>g, and accidental properties—what each is <strong>in</strong><br />

itself, what the six have <strong>in</strong> common, <strong>in</strong> what consists<br />

their difference, and how they bear upon the idea of<br />

the soul.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> Categories are to expla<strong>in</strong> the mean<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

ten words, each of which denotes a genus generum.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first of these is substance ; the other n<strong>in</strong>e, attributes.<br />

This tract shows what each of them is, how<br />

many species it conta<strong>in</strong>s. Further, it teaches the<br />

knowledge of the signs by which each is to be dist<strong>in</strong>-<br />

guished from the rema<strong>in</strong>der ;<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ally it po<strong>in</strong>ts out<br />

how these all lead to the ideas which are conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

the notion of the soul.<br />
