Westonians Report & 40th Year Celebration
The Westonians Committee for 2011 was
Graeme Barton, President, Tony Davidson,
Vice President, Kerry Carn, Secretary, Nick
Diasinas , Treasurer, Committee Members,
John Pirakis, John Flanigan, David Saint,
Bernie Conlen, Chris Higgins, Troy Abbott,
Craig Lewis and Jim Diamanti.
2011 was the 40th Anniversary of the
Westonians after being established in
1971. From a room under the grandstand
to a transportable building. Then in 1981
with the addition to the Footballer’s Club,
the transportable building was sold by
the Westonians and with a massive fund
raising effort $60,000 was paid for the
Westonians rooms as it currently sits. In
1994 major alterations were made to the
Westonians lounge.
To commemorate the 40th year, the Committee
decided that a new honour board
would be erected to note the individual
years of elected office bearers of the Committee,
Life Members and 10 year Committee
service.
Life Members Jack Smith and Reg
Henderson unveiled the honour roll at the
AGM.
This year, the Committee awarded Life
Member ship to Clive Sperling (posthumously),
and this was accepted by his son Paul
Sperling. Clive joins other Life Members of
the Westonians including Reg Henderson,
Jack Smith, Norm Hay, John Pirakis, Nick
Diasinas, Kerry Carn and John Flanigan.
The Westonians have raised in excess of
$1 million over the 40 years for the WAFC.
This year, the Westonians sponsored Ben
Macreadie, provided best player vouchers
for the U/18’s and U/16’s, (this has been
done for years), and provided silver goblets
and a plaque to James Ezard and Daniel
Caire who reached their 100 league games
milestone. We also presented the Keith
Reynolds Memorial Trophy for the best first
year player to come up through the ranks
to Chris Bonney.
The Westonians have raised and donated
money towards the electronic scoreboard,
computers for players to review game
video, the decking outside the Mound Bar
and the provision of new air conditioning for
the players change room area. This year,
the Westonians also funded the new carpet
in the upstairs ball room.
I would like to thank Steve Morris for his
liaison role between the Westonians and
players and his role in the after match
interviews.
This year the Westonians donated
$36,718.95 to the WAFC.
A big thank you to the Committee for the
hard work and organisational skills in
raising this amount.
Past Players & Officials Report
2011 has been another successful year
for the WAFCPPO group. This being
a social group for our Club, we have
enjoyed a year of several functions and
get-togethers.
The Committee, led by President Jim
Wright, put their heads together to focus
on the future and the development of
the WAFCPPO group, moving to the
stadium room on the North West corner
of the ground for home match days.
Again we had numerous folk through
our WAFCPPO room for half time social
fellowship.
On March 30th 2011, WAFCPPO midweek
raffles were launched at 6pm on
Wednesday’s. We thank Rick Pink for
his hard work and support in running our
raffles. We also extend a big thank you to
Vice President Steve Rechner together
with Rick Pink in hosting interviews with
Past Players and Officials each week.
Also we especially thank Pat Sexton
and Lorna Hitchcock for their ongoing
support.
WAFCPPO hosted three of our home
match days in the “Stadium Room” to
mark the beginning of the relocation of
our WAFCPPO group to the deck and
mound area of the field.
The Ken Eglinton Medal was presented
to James Ezard. We thank Adelaide
Galvanising Industries for their sponsorship
of the Medal.
Bernie Conlen kept our promotional
DVD’s on screen in the WAFC Club
rooms; a great medium to advertise and
promote our functions and show player
profiles; together with footage of football
game highlights.
In 2011 WAFCPPO group sponsored
league player, Jack Carter. At the Club
Presentation night, Michael Minuzzo was
awarded the Knott/Mitchell Memorial
Scholarship sponsored by the WAFCPPO
group.
WAFCPPO group extends our most
sincere condolences to all families of
WAFCPPO members that have died in
2011. Our thoughts and condolences go
out to the family of David Lee, one of our
valued Committee Members.
On September 16th 2011 the WAFCPPO
hosted their annual dinner. This night
celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the
1961 Premiership and the players of
the late 1980’s and early 1990’s era.
WAFC folk travelled from all across
Australia to join together for a fun filled
evening. The night was started with
Trevor Reu stating his pride in being a
WAFC player. He is the last remaining
Minister with any SANFL club and we
are honoured to have him join us each
year. The guest speakers for the night
were Mark Mickan, Robbie McKinnon
and Shaun Rehn. Craig Bennetts and
Paul Patterson interviewed Grantley
Fielke, Leon Grosser and John Ryan
with the roving microphones. The night
was also filled with entertainment led by
comedian Dave Flanagan. We especially
Historian’s Report
This year we have posted all of our
players from 1897 on our website with
their league debut date and unique debut
number. The lockers in the player change
rooms are complete with correct league
details and we have also printed in our
annual report for the first time, correct
player details for those who have made it
to the 100 game milestones and added to
our war Veteran’s list.
Presently, I have researched all South
Australian State games from 1879-1975
and by this time next year, will have
revised and printed a list of all West
Adelaide representatives in time for the
2012 State Game.
Donations
Throughout the year, we have had donations
from members for which we are
grateful. Some members have lent items
which we have copied for our archives
while other members have given their
time with various projects. We are desperate
to source club annual reports for
seasons 1915, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1926,
1930, 1931 & 1943 so we can digitise
our collection.
