Who says boozy cocktails should
have all the fun? Invite sparkling
pink lemonade to the party by
serving it in a champagne flute
garnished with a strawberry, or
celebrate summer with a blackberry
sage spritzer sipped from a
mason jar with a decorative straw.
Sparkling alcohol-free drinks are the
perfect way for everyone to cool
off and celebrate the flavors of the
season.
Flavor Fundamentals
The key to a sophisticated sparkler
is to layer the flavors just like
a traditional cocktail. Start with
muddled herbs, berries or citrus;
add fruit juice puree or nectar and
some sparkling water; and finish
off with a thin slice of fruit or a few
berries.
Flavored balsamic vinegars make
an easy base for a refreshing lowcalorie
alternative to sugary sodas.
Fill a tall glass with ice, add 2 to
3 tablespoons of flavored balsamic
vinegar (ginger blackberry is
FOODIE FOR
fantastic), and top it off with club
soda.
Keeping simple syrup on hand
makes it easy to sweeten any chilled
beverage. Just heat 1 cup of water
and 1 cup of sugar in a saucepan
until dissolved. For an extra dose of
flavor, add a mint or rosemary sprig,
vanilla bean, ginger slice or piece of
citrus rind to the mixture as it cools.
Store the infused syrup in the fridge
and add a dash to your next drink.
Add Some Sparkle
“Fizzy” spells fun when it comes
to summertime. Add club soda, flavored
sparkling water, ginger ale or
lemon-lime soda to infused syrups or
combinations of muddled herbs and
fruits.
Summer Sparklers
Festive Nonalcoholic Drinks Delight & Refresh
by Kirsten Harrington
Finish With a Twist
Instead of a little pink umbrella,
give your drink the finish it deserves
with a few raspberries skewered
onto a fresh rosemary sprig, a
small purple orchid, a wedge of
pineapple, or a citrus twist. Simply
cut a 3- to 4-inch piece of lemon,
lime or orange zest and wrap it
around the end of a wooden spoon.
Cover it with plastic wrap for an
hour until the zest holds its shape.
Float the spiral in the drink or
hang it on the glass for an elegant
garnish.
For an added touch, decorate the
rim of the glass with colored sanding
sugars mixed with crushed cookies,
freeze-dried berries or cocoa nibs.
Place the ingredients on a plate,
wet the glass with water or a lemon
wedge, and dip the glass into the
mixture, rotating the glass to cover
the entire rim, letting it dry before
serving.
Ice cubes are another way to add
a layer of flavor and visual appeal.
Berries and water frozen in mini-ice
cube trays look stunning in sparkling
drinks, and frozen cubes of
watermelon or peach puree keep
things cool without diluting the
flavor.
Watermelon
Lime Sparkler
Ingredients:
1 cup frozen watermelon chunks,
seeds removed
2 tablespoons frozen limeade
concentrate
1/4 cup lemon-lime soda (Sprite,
7 Up, Sierra Mist)
3 to 4 ice cubes
Pre-Nuptial Agreements
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
German philosopher,
Friedrich Nietzsche said
of marriage, “it is not the
lack of love, but a lack
of friendship that makes
unhappy marriages.” Albert Einstein said of marriage, “Men marry women
with the hope they will never change. Women marry men with the hope they
will change. Invariably they are both disappointed.”
Marriage is supposed to be that divine moment which begins with
so many good, sincere and loving things to say about each other and the
euphoric intent of spending the rest of your lives together in wedded bliss.
The church believes that all marriages are made in heaven, but then, so are
thunder and lightning. The unfortunate reality is that marriage can become
the most advanced form of warfare whereby, according to most statistics,
about 50% of all marriages end in divorce. It is something to give you pause
if you are bringing a lot of assets and property to the marriage and even
greater pause if it is your second or third marriage and you have children
substantial assets from a prior marriage.
And what is marriage? Although 13 states have common law statutes, all
50 states have marriage contracts. And exactly what is a marriage contract?
Simply said, it is an agreement between 2 parties that agree to love and trust
each another until death do they part. Unfortunately, when the trust is
broken and divorce is inevitable, it gives courts the mechanism to enforce
emotional and equitable fairness. So if most couples, prior to marriage, are
happy and satisfied to sign a marriage contract, what is their fear of signing
a pre-nuptial agreement (Prenup)? The purpose of a Prenup is typically
to prevent assets or individually owned property from ever becoming
marital property.
Unlike a marriage contract that characterizes all of the blissful, loving,
and joyful decisions to marry, a Prenup often feels more like a painful
thorn in the sides of one or both partners. Basically, a Prenup states that
“although I love you unconditionally, our love is conditional and if we
divorce, what is mine shall remain only mine and only what we acquire
during marriage is ours.” It may sound harsh but consider the following
example.
Four years following the clamorous and horrific divorce from her
first husband, Alice fell head over heels in love with Joseph and they
decided to marry. She brought to their marriage 2 minor children
from her first marriage, a successful career and $650,000 in assets that
included a furnished home, a substantial 401k and IRA, luxury car
and bank accounts. Joseph brought to the marriage only a decent job
and his undying love for Alice and her children. It was no surprise to
Joseph when Alice asked him to sign a prenuptial agreement should their
marriage fall apart as did her first.
Whether you are contemplating your first, second or third marriage,
if you are bringing a substantial amount of property and assets to a
marriage, you should discuss your estate with
both your fiancée and an estate planning
attorney before you say “I do”.
Most people come to Florida for its
man-made attractions — SeaWorld
Orlando, Universal Orlando Resort
and Walt Disney World Resort —
however, in picturesque Winter Park,
it is all about natural attractions and
sights; one attraction being that of
the treasured Scenic Boat Tour
that has been generating oohs and
aahs from visitors and residents for
decades.
Started in 1938 by the Meloon
family, the boat tour takes people of
all ages through the scenic canals
nestled within the city to view historic
homes, iconic structures and the
beautiful, private campus of Rollins
College.
The tour shows people a different
side of Central Florida that takes
them back to a time when the state
was mostly known for its chains of
lakes and natural surroundings.
“Winter Park architecture is interesting
and not what people think when
they think of Florida: beaches, theme
parks, etc.,” said Ron Hightower,
owner/manager of Scenic Boat Tour
for almost 25 years. “We do hear
NOTEWORTHY
a lot [from visitors] that it is a nice
break from the theme parks.”
The tour originally began when
Scenic Boat Tour Celebrates 80 Years!
the boat-manufacturing company
Correct Craft — decided to invest
in a boat tour that would feature the
charming flora and fauna of Winter
Today, 80 years after its 1938
launch, the Scenic Boat Tour still recognizes
the originality of the historic
homes and locations that are in and
around Lake Osceola, as well as
Florida’s native occupants of alligators,
fish and birds, through its hourlong,
18-person pontoon tours.
“We have always tried to keep the
tour as close to the original format
as possible,” said Ron, whose grandfather
was one of the knowledgeable
tour guides before purchasing
the touring business in 1995. “My
grandfather started working with the
boat tour in 1970, so I grew up here
and came down to the tour as a kid.
It has stayed with me over the years.”
Even if the tour has remained the
same for years, you never know what
you might see — animal, human or
sight — while taking the excursion.
It is not uncommon to see the Rollins
crew team practicing boat drills on
the lake, and, in 2013, the Capen
House was floated across the water
to its new location.
BUSINESS
It’s summer. You get home from
work and are too hot and exhausted
to even think about cleaning
your house. Besides, you want to
be outside enjoying longer daylight
hours. On weekends, you want to
take day trips with the kids to the
beach, or you just want to hang
out at the pool with a cool drink in
your hand. The last thing you want
to think about is dusting, scrubbing
and vacuuming. You need
Molly Maid!
Founded in 1979, Molly Maid
quickly became one of the most-trusted
names in home-cleaning services.
Molly Maid is an international business
with more than 400 individual
franchisees throughout the world.
Each franchise is locally owned and
operated.
In the Orlando area, there are
five local franchises, each with a
specific “protected” territory. If a
client contacts a franchise not in
their designated area, they are referred
to the correct one. The five
territories work in support of each
other and share local and regional
marketing.
For the west side of Orange
County and the southern half of Lake
County, the office for Molly Maid
is located at 1101 S. Park Ave. in
PROFILE
A Respected Name in Home Service
You Can Clean, or You Can Call Molly Maid!
Molly Maid cleaning professionals arrive at their clients’ homes in a signature decal
vehicle.
Winter Garden. The owner/operator
is Steve Hoffman.
Mr. Hoffman has owned his franchise
for 13 years. He considers himself
a hands-on owner. He doesn’t
just spend “some time” in the office.
He is there first thing in the morning
when each of the two-person teams
is dispatched. And, he is there when
they return with reports about their
day. He employs 30 professionally
trained cleaners.
The cleaning professionals arrive
in a Molly Maid-signature vehicle,
dressed in matching uniforms. They
bring their own cleaning supplies
and are insured and bonded. The
team understands what needs to
be done, and they get right to it. If
there is something the team misses
or something not cleaned to a customer’s
satisfaction, Molly Maid will
return free-of-charge.
According to Mr. Hoffman, “Each
client can make [his/her] own schedule
based on [his/her] cleaning
needs.” Molly Maid does not issue
contracts to clients, but “works with
the needs of the customer.”
There are many types of cleaning
arrangements that can be
made besides becoming a regular
once-a-week or once-a-month
customer.

Molly Maid offers occasional
cleaning for special life events. For
example, if you are about to bring
home a newborn baby, a cleaning
team can make your home germ-free.
Another popular service is movein
and move-out cleaning. Moving
from one home to another can be a
time of upheaval and stress. Molly
Maid can make your move go much
easier by leaving your old home
spotless and your new home clean
and welcoming.
You can also tell Molly Maid which
specific rooms you want cleaned. It
doesn’t have to be the whole house.
For example, your college student’s
room may only need to be cleaned
occasionally, before they return
home for school breaks.
The first visit to a home is always
a “deep clean,” which establishes
the level of cleanliness to be maintained.
The cost of that visit will be
a bit higher than subsequent visits.
But the cost of Molly Maid service is
quite competitive.
Our goal is to “offer high-end,
premium service to the middle-class
customer,” Mr. Hoffman said. “I want
our customers to think of us as valuable
and affordable.”
Molly Maid also offers gift certificates,
a perfect gift for any occasion.
When asked about Molly Maid’s
contribution to the Greater Orlando
community, Mr. Hoffman was
2018
proud to relay information about
the Ms. Molly Foundation. A portion
of each clean goes to supporting
domestic violence prevention
programs for hundreds of local
safe houses and shelters. For the
past 20 years, all franchises have
held a national drive in October.
Last year, Hoffman’s franchise donated
$2,000 to SafeHouse of
As summer winds down, children’s thoughts across Southwest Orlando will
inevitably turn to the first day of school. The school year, which begins Aug.
13 for public schools, is less than a month away, and students and their families
can get a head start by preparing now. The beginning of school is an
exciting time, but some might worry about what the coming year may hold.
Southwest Orlando Bulletin’s 21st annual Back to School section provides
a comprehensive look at a variety of school-related topics. In the following
articles, area experts offer insights into different concerns often brought
about by the start of a new school year. For students, there are articles about
makeup tips and homework resources. For parents, there is information about
dental hygiene, stress management for the family, and more.
Parents, it’s time to buckle up as
children will soon be heading back
to school. Some kids struggle with
poor grades and behavioral problems
because of undiagnosed or
poorly treated attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD/ADD or
inattentive/hyperactive/mixed). This
is a time for parents to take action.
The following are strategies that
can help children and parents
succeed:
• Learn about ADHD and its related
mood and behavioral problems.
• Get an evaluation from a child
psychiatrist as soon as possible.
• Get help from a therapist who
can work with you and your child.
• Be ready to make some changes
at home.
• Get necessary accommodations,
recommended by the psychiatrist, at
the child’s school. Examples include
an Individualized Education Program
(IEP) and a 504 Plan. There is a
law that helps to serve the educational
needs of eligible students with
disabilities.
• Rethink all the strategies and
medications used in the past.
• Tooth Decay in Children
by Sonia Simmonds, D.D.S.
Simmonds Dental Center
321-558-7635
simmondsdentalcenter.com
Tooth decay in children often results
in having a tooth extracted. An
extraction can be a cause for alarm
for the child, and this alarm could
extend to their parents, as well. For
this reason, it appears that not all
parents are diligent in having their
children’s teeth treated, and delaying
treatment can lead to a toothache
and add disruption to a child’s
daily life. This is why back-to-school
exams are so important!
A tooth extraction for a child can
be a scary procedure since he/she
does not know what to expect and
will often worry that the procedure
will hurt. Dental caries, or tooth decay,
could lead to other more serious
conditions if they’re not attended to
immediately. So, if your child needs
to undergo a tooth extraction, but
he/she is scared of a dental visit, try
going to a caring dentist where your
family is comfortable. Seeing a pediatric
dentist is also an option. By educating
your child, you may relieve
some anxiety surrounding the dental
experience.
and from school or to after-school extracurricular
activities, your time with
your family is precious. Quality family
time is worth every second — take
advantage of it. Look for those opportunities
to talk with your children
about their days at school, asking
them about their “highs and lows.”
Give them your undivided attention
and ask the same of them. Never accept
the one-word answers, but dig
deeper. This will not only allow for
you to know more about your child’s
day, but it will give your child the opportunity
to feel valued and heard.
Remember that the time we have
with our children is limited — make
the best of those treasured moments
by putting down the electronic devices
and connecting with one another.
• Homework Headaches? Let
the Library Help!
by Mira Tanna, Assistant Manager
Technology and Education Center
Orange County Library System
407-835-7323
ocls.info/homework • ocls.info/brainfuse •
online.infobase.com
Your local library offers a wide array
of resources to help kids — and
parents — tackle homework problems.
Any parent who has encountered
their second-grader’s question about
a “10 frame” knows that the way
math is being taught these days is
different from the way we learned it
growing up. Even the easiest math
problems can stump parents, because
they aren’t familiar with the
strategies being used to teach math
under Common Core. Luckily, there
is help available at the nearest public
library or with the click of a mouse.
Many libraries offer access to
databases that can help kids with
science projects, art and music projects,
language learning and more.
Students working on science fair
projects can find a wealth of ideas in
Science Online, a resource available
courtesy of the library. Each section
— biology, chemistry, earth science,
etc. — contains experiments that a
student can conduct at home.
Some libraries offer online homework
help that can connect kids with
resources from home. Library card
holders can log onto the library website,
enter their library card number,
and connect to a certified live tutor.
Students are often more receptive to
help from an online tutor than from
a parent, and parents can feel confident
that the tutor is familiar with the
current approach used in schools to
teach the subject.
The library is still a great place to
do research. Kids will find nonfiction
books at their reading level that
they can use as reputable sources
and public computers to access the
internet. Online databases on a variety
of subjects (such as biography,
opposing viewpoints, research in
context) are searchable by reading
level and make it much easier than a
general online search to locate pertinent
articles. Citations for each article
are formatted to be copied into
a bibliography.
As children become more independent
from their parents, they
can benefit from not only learning
the skills taught in school but from
learning how to acquire knowledge
and skills on their own. Introducing
them to the library can provide that
foundation for lifelong learning that
will benefit them long after they have
graduated from high school.
• The Benefits of a Private,
Christian School Education
by Joseph Cioffi, Director of Marketing &
Communications
Foundation Academy
407-656-3677 • 407-877-2744
foundationacademy.net
A private, Christian school education
is built upon high academic
standards, positive learning environments,
a sense of community, discipline
and Christ-centered values.

A private school education stresses
the importance of an education that
sets high academic standards that will
challenge the students throughout their
academic pursuits. In addition, a private
school has a tendency to foster
smaller class sizes, which in turn cultivates
an educational environment that
has more one-on-one interaction with
the teacher and enables the student to
receive help for academic challenges,
promotes increased class participation,
and allows the teacher to really understand
the students and identify their
weaknesses, as well as their strengths.
A private, Christian school also offers
a diverse, yet intimate, community
of students and families who share a
common set of beliefs, interests and
standards that foster a sense of belonging.
This enriches the environment
that promotes learning and growth
that can be done both on an individual
basis as well as together.
There also is an emphasis on discipline
that is structured around Christian
values and is reflected in various traits,
including thoughtfulness, kindness
and understanding. These elements
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x July 19 — August 1, 2018 x 15
transcend into the environment, where
students feel safe both physically and
mentally and that allows students to
be dedicated to the process of learning
rather than uncertainty and worry.
Lastly, values are perhaps one
of the most important elements of
a Christian education. A Christcentered
approach to teaching and
learning allows a private, Christian
school to truly partner with families
and the church to build a foundation
for life that will serve its students well
for the exciting life that lies ahead.
will be picture-perfect, too. The following
makeup tips are for tweens and
teens as they head back to school:
• In sixth grade, wear lip gloss,
some mascara and a bit of pale eye
shadows; don’t go too heavy, or it will
look bad. Keep it natural. You can add
a touch of glitter, but don’t overdo it!
• In seventh grade, you may begin
to care more about your appearance,
so use a lightweight foundation
or powder and a little eyeliner. Don’t
use too much. You don’t want to have
black eyes! Use a natural eye shadow
and a light-colored shiny lip gloss.
You also can use a powdered highlighter
to give you a natural glow.
• In eighth grade, you are getting
better at makeup, and you know
what you like. Try establishing your
own style. Liquid or powder foundation
is great, but be sure you blend
it. Try a bit of darker color for your
eyes, cheeks and lips. But remember,
natural colors work best.
• In ninth grade: Welcome to high
school! You are around a variety of
ages, and you are going to want to
look like the rest of your peers. You
should, by now, have your own makeup
style. Update your look a bit, no
one wants to carry the same look they
had in middle school. You can wear
your usual makeup during the day,
and make it up, but not too much.
If you go out at night, you can add
darker shades to your eyes and lips.
Places like CVS, Walgreens and
Walmart Inc. have great makeup lines
that are not too expensive. Sephora
and Mac Cosmetics have makeup, too.
The longer days of summer fun
and vacationing will turn into a backto-school
gallop next month. Amid
the challenges of keeping children
occupied, planning vacations and
celebrating the summer holidays, parents
can help themselves by doing a
little pre-planning. While they’re at
The Grove, racing from store to store
getting daily activities done, parents
should keep a mental list or, better yet,
put those smartphones to use and make
actual lists of the things they know their
children will need once school starts.
Yes, each teacher will have their
own list of “must haves,” but there are
always the basics that are needed,
including paper, pencils, pens and
backpacks. These items can add
up to a big bill when buying them
all at once, not to mention all the
elbow bumping of parents seeking
the same items at the same time. It
is a good idea to take advantage of
summer sales and bargains at one’s
favorite discount store.
If a child is entering a grade where
his/her backpack will be holding
more books and binders, parents
should consider purchasing one of
the many great packs designed to
carry extra items, so their children
will not strain any muscle groups before
they even get to gym class. Also,
even though it will be August, parents
can grab a $1 calendar in the clearance
pile and post it front and center,
so they can mark off dates that
are sure to be on the first papers that
are sent home from school. Set those
smartphone calendar date reminders,
too, for your and your child’s phone.
Everyone carries phones today!
If parents can wade into the school
year with a little less stress, they can
feel good knowing they have avoided
some of the inevitable anxiety
that comes when a child is starting
a new grade.
Is your child a lifelong learner? How
do you create a love for learning? The
following are a few tried-and-true tips
for both parents and educators:
First, catch your child’s curiosity.
When your child shows a natural
interest or passion in something, use
it. Once your child shows a spark of
excitement and curiosity, help them
pursue more resources or information
about it. There is an abundance
of digital resources, but don’t forget
about good, old-fashioned, handson
experiences, too.
Second, let your child run after the
questions. Let them do the heavy lifting
to find the answers. When they
ask a question, facilitate them in finding
the answer. Keep a notebook,
whiteboard or digital list of all the
questions they have asked and answers
they have found.
Next, give choices. Let your child
steer the way for a family outing or
experience. Giving them the freedom
and ownership will pave the
way for higher engagement. They
chose it, so they own it!
Finally, make the time. It seems
cliché, but you can never overestimate
setting aside time for
exploration. Even a short walk
around the neighborhood can
open the door to a whole new
world.
Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman
who lives life to its fullest …
and then some! Edward’s incredible,
larger-than-life stories thrill
everyone around him – most of
all, his devoted wife, Sandra. Their
son, Will, is determined to find out
if there is any truth to the extravagant
tales his father tells about meeting
witches, kissing mermaids and
joining the circus, once and for all.
Overflowing with heart and humor,
Big Fish is richer, funnier and bigger
MATTER OF HEALTH
What Is Vaginal Rejuvenation?
by Lori K. Lambert, M.D.
7051 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Suite 5, Orlando • 407-363-2000 • lorilambertmd.com
Voted Top Doctor
in Orlando 2015,
2016 & 2017
Laser vaginal rejuvenation is a
therapy that helps restore tone and
flexibility to the vaginal and vulvar tissues.
Childbirth, menopause, certain
skin conditions like vulvar dystrophy
and lichen sclerosis, cancer treatment
and aging can cause thinning of the
vagina, called vaginal atrophy, or vulvovaginal
atrophy (involving the vulva
and vagina). Vaginal atrophy can lead
to vaginal dryness, painful sex called
dyspareunia, vaginal irritation, vaginal
burning and skin discoloration of the
vulva with age spots or brown spots.
Laser treatment of the pelvic tissue
increases collagen production, which
strengthens the vagina and vulvar tissue,
and improves elasticity and flexibility,
as well as improving vaginal
lubrication. Laser vaginal rejuvenation
is one type of labiaplasty treatment
that can lead to skin rejuvenation of
the vagina, as well as the vulva. For
women with vaginal laxity (looseness
of the vagina, usually after childbirth),
laser rejuvenation can improve vaginal
tone and result in vaginal tightening.
The laser resurfacing treatment of the
vulva can minimize and/or resolve
pigment changes, age spots or brown
spots.
Although the Juliet medical laser is
not FDA-approved for the treatment
of urinary issues, many women have
reported an improvement in urinary urgency
and urinary incontinence after
treatment.
n Protect yourself from
mosquitoes
Officials of the Florida Department
of Health in Orange County advise
residents that there is an increase in
mosquito-borne disease activity in
areas of Orange County. Several
sentinel chicken flocks have tested
positive for Eastern equine encephalitis
virus infection, therefore the
risk of transmission to humans has
increased. Orange County Mosquito
Control and DOH-Orange
continue surveillance and prevention
efforts. DOH-Orange officials remind
residents and visitors to avoid
being bitten by mosquitoes and to
take basic precautions to help limit
exposure.
To protect yourself from mosquitoes,
remember to “drain and cover.”
Drain standing water to stop mosquitoes
from multiplying. Drain water
from garbage cans, house gutters,
buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys,
flower pots or any other containers
where sprinkler water or rainwater
have collected. Discard old
tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and
pans, broken appliances and other
items that aren’t being used. Empty
and clean birdbaths and pet water
bowls at least once or twice a week.
Protect boats and vehicles from rain
with tarps that don’t accumulate
water. Maintain swimming pools in
good condition and appropriately
chlorinated. Empty plastic swimming
pools when not in use.
Cover skin with clothing or repellent.
Wearing shoes, socks, long
pants and long sleeves provides
protection for people who work in
areas where mosquitoes are present.
Apply mosquito repellent to bare
skin and clothing. Use mosquito
netting to protect children younger
than 2 months old. Cover doors and
