A KIWI SLANT ON
INTERNATIONAL SASS
While we’ve always been comfortable with the
classic, getting New Zealanders to embrace edgier
international styles has been a slow process, says
David, but he is seeing change.
“We’ve been so much into the white walls and
natural carpets, it’s been quite boring. As time
goes on New Zealanders are becoming more
adventurous in the way we buy. We’re seeing
layering of more textured fabrics, more mixing of
fabrics and timbers, putting marble or metal with
timber just to make it a bit more interesting and a
bit more unique looking.
“Now we’re going to more colours, more
drapes, more velvets, more wallpapers and
suddenly the home’s changing, it’s a lot warmer.”
David says New Zealanders are still hesitant
about investing in the coloured and textured glass
that Europeans love and generally we’re more
comfortable with a more natural look, natural
timbers or marble. “We’re inspired by Europe but
have our own take on it and all the designs are a
lot softer-edged now,” he says.
