Message
As we look at the myriad of ophthalmology
courses and meetings one can attend, we can
see that ophthalmology practice has indeed
become highly specialised. The general
ophthalmologist will need to be constantly
updated in the advances in the world around
them to remain relevant. Even subspecialists
will need to have updates not just within their
field but the ophthalmology field in general.
The focus of our courses have always been not
only for the subspecialists but we are mindful
to also cater to those outside of the specialty.
As an academic medical centre, we run in-house
rounds, journal club and expert talks in addition to
the courses listed in our annual program. We conduct
clinical attachment and training for medical staff from
medical students to residents, subspecialty fellowship
training and training for general medical staff including
family medicine and emergency medicine. We have
started to utilize simulation in the training of skills like
cataract surgery, fundoscopy and binocular indirect
ophthalmoscopy. Our new in-house wetlab and
simulation centre also allows our doctors to hone in their
surgical and clinical skills, this has been made possible by
our generous donors and partners in healthcare.
As we focus on the training of our doctors, we must not
forget the training needs of our allied health and nursing
professionals. We have recently worked to develop
a new Ophthalmology Nursing Program together
Curtin University in Singapore. Our collaboration with
JCAHPO is also being looked at beyond having our
Ophthalmic Technician and Assistance courses receiving
their accreditation. SNEC will be working to become
a IJCAHPO-SNEC Regional Training and Certification
Center, this is recognition for the close collaboration
with SNEC in the past few years. We are indeed honoured
with the opportunity for such a collaboration. This will
expand our role to be a regional examination centre for
JCAHPO catering to the region. Ultimately, we need to
remind ourselves that the entire healthcare team needs
to be constantly upgraded to remain relevant. We note
that there will be increasing demands on healthcare in
areas like ophthalmology as the population ages. We
need to re-invent the way we take care of our patients
and develop innovative care models. Some of these new
care models will require all our staff to upskill themselves
and take on more responsibility in new areas. SNEC
hopes to be ready to provide the relevant training skills
to all ophthalmology healthcare professionals at all
levels when this happens. This is part of the journey the
training and education department will need to embark
on in tandem with the new clinical directions in SNEC.
We hope to see some of you at the courses in SNEC this
year. Best Wishes to all.
