This 1-day introductory course on phacoemulsification surgery aims to
provide a comprehensive introduction to the skills required for successful
phacoemulsification surgery.
COURSE OUTLINE
We have assembled a large SNEC faculty for this course. The main highlights
include didactic lectures on phacoemulsification surgery techniques, as well as,
wet-lab exposure. We will be using the award-winning KITARO wetlab system
where different grades of nuclear hardness are available for phacoemulsification
and realistic capsulorrhexis is possible.
Various phacoemulsification machine technology from 4 companies: Alcon
(Infiniti), AMO (Signature), B&L (Stellaris) and Zeiss (Visalis 500) will be available
for use at the wetlab. Their respective intraocular lens and Injectors systems
will also be featured and practice opportunities will be readily available. Our
faculty members and industry partners will be present to guide and assist you.

The Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) is pleased to organise a 3-day course
comprising didactic lectures, hands-on wetlabs, live surgery and clinical case
presentations to provide corneal surgeons and ophthalmologists looking after
corneal patients with advice on the management of such patients.
COURSE OUTLINE
1. Lecture Topics
• Penetrating keratoplasty versus
lamellar k eratoplasty (ALK) -
Why change?
• Anterior lamellar keratoplasty:
Indications, surgical techniques
of manual ALK, deep anterior
lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) with
modified Big Bubble technique,
automated lamellar therapeutic
keratoplasty (ALTK), femtosecond
laser-assisted ALK, preoperative
and postoperative management.
• Endothelial keratoplasty (EK):
Indications, surgical techniques of
Descemet’s-stripping automated
endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK),
preoperative and postoperative
management, introduction to
Descemet’s membrane endothelial
keratoplasty (DMEK) and
femtosecond laser-assisted EK.
2. Hands-on wetlab experience -
ALK/ALTK/DALK/DMEK/DSAEK.
3. Live surgery of ALTK and EK Donor
preparation followed by DSAEK in
Asian eyes.
4. Clinical examination of ALK/DSAEK/
DMEK patients patients.
The emphasis of this programme is
on selective tissue transplantation
particularly with different
forms of lamellar surgery e.g.
ALK/DALK as well as DSAEK.
