SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency
Education Programme Committee
The Ophthalmology Residency Programme started
on 4th July 2011. The first 3 years of the revised
training system are carried out under the guidelines
of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education (ACGME).
In these 3 years, beyond clinical training, all
residents are instructed on and expected to master
the 6 core competencies which are the main
tenets of the ACGME. These competencies cover
medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal
and communication skills, practice-based learning
and improvement, system-based practice and
professionalism. The remaining 2 years in the
Residency Programme will allow our residents
to hone their clinical skills in all subspecialties
before they attain full subspecialty registration
in Singapore.

clinical posting and information on all diagnostic tests and
investigations pertinent to ophthalmology. SNEC boasts
a faculty of more than 88 attending ophthalmologists
in all ophthalmic subspecialties including ophthalmic
pathology. We have a training and education department
that provides the invaluable administrative support for
residency training. SingHealth and SNEC are committed
to providing the best possible training for ophthalmic
residency in Singapore.

The residents will be evaluated in all these competencies
in their daily clinical practice and are expected to meet the
required level of competence before being allowed to exit
the programme. This programme differs from the old 6-year
training programme in the provision of supervised structured
training and regular evaluations. Residents are required to
monitor their duty hours and are provided with protected
education time to ensure that they
get enough rest and opportunities to
attend teaching sessions. The multiple
evaluations during training enable the
programme director to monitor
residents and identify those who need
help early to guide them along. The
system believes in graduated
responsibilities so that residents will
be given increased responsibilities
and procedural privileges as
they progressively demonstrate
competence in the areas of training.

comprehensive 2-week orientation
programme which covers all aspects of
ophthalmology training, knowledge of
