Further ideas for looking at patterns within number
patterns:
• Consider patterns of digits that add to 11, or another
number.
• Explore multiple patterns on other grids. For example, a
standard grid to a spiral grid.
• Consider other patterns such as square numbers,
triangular numbers and Fibonacci numbers.
• Teachers may introduce the notion of vectors when
describing patterns on a number grid. For example, if
r=right, l=left, u=up and d=down one cell respectively,
then patterns may be described using a combination of
moves to form an expression. The expression 2r+d
could be used to describe the pattern formed by the
multiples of 12. Students could write patterns for other
students to follow and colour. For example, 2r+3d.
