Community garden
sprouts up in Burnside
• By Ashleigh Monk
BURNSIDERS WILL be able to lounge
around and enjoy the sun in their new
community garden.
The Monarch Community Garden
on Kendal Ave sprang to life through
the combined efforts of Housing New
Zealand, the Bishopdale Menzshed, Clean
Up Canterbury and several working bees
attended by local residents and school
children.
The land for the garden was donated
by St Timothy’s Anglican Church in
Burnside.
said the idea for a garden came after it was
meeting.
“I think originally the residents thought
‘I love this idea but will it really happen?’
And I’m a very proactive person, so if you
want it to happen, it’ll happen.”
She said the support from local groups
and organisations had been “amazing”.
“All the working bees to get it all planted
and sorted have been just amazing.”
“I went to drop some flyers around the
area and people were like ‘oh my gosh, it
really did happen’. So it’s really exciting
for the community and people that have
gotten involved.”
Bishopdale Menzshed member Richard
Rendle said the group built and positioned
the planter boxes, put together some
old pallets to make compost bins and
assembled a garden shed.
“The community benefits and Menzshed
members feel they are doing something
useful in their retirement.”
