Fire rages, homes at risk
Fendalton heavy truck ban unlikely
FENDALTON residents appear
to have failed in their bid to
ban heavy vehicles from using a
controversial intersection.
Independent consultants
Abley were commissioned
to review the intersection
of Glandovey and Idris Rds
and reported back to the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board.
The report said traffic wasn’t
heavy enough to warrant a ban.
A city council-commissioned
traffic modelling forecast came
to the same conclusion.
Glandovey, Idris and
Straven Residents’ Association
spokesman James Wilding said
in spite of the results of the
reports indicating heavy vehicles
would not be banned, the group
was still of the view that trucks
weighing up to 50-tonne which
pass through the intersection
should use larger arterial routes.
“Christchurch and other cities
have many streets which restrict
these very heavy vehicles by sign
or road treatment.”
He said he believed the issue
was a “double-standard”.
“The council seeks 30km/h for
parts of the CBD, most recently
St Asaph St, in the interests of
safety, health and amenity, but is
unconcerned by its data which
now shows speeding in the
suburbs around homes where
children live.”
Mr Wilding also said he
believed some important factors
had been left out of the report.
He said the residents’
association raised the issue of
high accident rates on Straven
Rd and Clarence St, but those
streets were not included in the
report.
“[We] do not know why when
we raised the issue of traffic and
safety on roads where there are
high accident rates, including
Straven Rd and Clarence St,
they have not been reported
on, nor as another example
the narrowness of roads, for
SET BACK:
Reports show
a ban on heavy
vehicles is
unlikely at the
Glandovey
and Idris Rds
intersection.
example Glandovey Road being
less than 12m wide in part.”
Board chairman Sam
MacDonald declined to
comment on the matter at
this stage, saying he would
like to have a conversation
will all involved parties before
the board would make a
decision.
In Brief
QE II SCHOOLS MEETING
The Ministry of Education,
Papanui-Innes Community
Board and Coastal-Burwood
Community Board met on
Wednesday to have a “full and
frank discussion” about feedback
from local residents on the zoning
plans for the Avonside Girls
and Shirley Boys’ High School
combined campus at QE II Park.
Papanui-Innes Community Board
chairwoman Ali Jones said the
meeting went well, but she could
not comment further. “[The
Ministry of Education] took the
feedback on board and we are
looking forward to continuing
our conversation with them,”
she said.
TRUST WANTS IDEAS
The Bishopdale Community
Trust wants the public to make
suggestions of new activities to fill
Tuesday afternoons at Sundbye
Community House. The activity
would need to suit the main
room of Sundbye Community
House, which seats up to 22
people. Depending on the
activity, the trust would ask for a
gold coin donation to help with
running costs at the house. Ideas
can be pitched to community
development worker Chris Coles
on 359 1741.
