Potholed car park may be sealed
CERTIFICATES: Selwyn House School students and their
coach with Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner.
Cycleway project earns high
praise for Sewlyn House girls
AN INNOVATIVE school
project to promote the city’s
cycleway network has won
international honours and high
praise from Deputy Mayor
Andrew Turner.
The achievements of nine
Selwyn House School students
were acknowledged by the city
council at a presentation of
special certificates.
Cleo McLeod, Sophie
Hodgson, Lucy Maynard, Miya
Hartstonge, Reed McHugh,
Alice Hunter, Bonnie Smith,
Phoebe Donald and Kate
Gourley – along with their
teacher and coach Adele Staples
– shared their idea and Future
Problem Solving adventure with
councillors.
The students used a lasercutter
and 3D printer to create
bike cut-outs that could be
decorated and hidden in places
along the new cycle routes for
cyclists to discover, encouraging
families and youngsters to grab
their bikes and hunt for the new
shapes.
They plan to launch their
#LetsBikeChristchurch
project in October. Cr Turner
congratulated the students for
scooping third spot with their
#LetsBikeChristchurch initiative
at the Future Problem Solving
international conference in
La Crosse, Wisconsin, United
States.
“For a group of young people
to come up with this wonderful
idea to attract people to our
cycleway network and then
present the idea in a highlycompetitive
environment is a
truly impressive achievement,”
he said.
PART OF the potholed car park
in New Brighton’s Hawke St may
finally be sealed.
A temporary fix was made this
month when the owner of the
old Funky Pumpkin building
arranged for the potholes on
a section of the car park to
be filled with
gravel, says
New Brighton
Business and
landowners
Association
manager Paul
Lonsdale.
Some of the
Paul
Lonsdale
property owners
have also now
got quotes on the
cost of repairing the potholes,
he said. The estimated cost is
$50,000 for the whole car park to
be fixed.
The plan is to undertake
the work when the weather
improves, he said. The rest of the
car park remains potholed as a
result of having multiple private
owners and the cost of repairs.
He said some of the properties
do not have tenants, meaning
there is no financial benefit for
the owners to fix the potholes.
Concerns have been raised
about the state of the car park
on the Peoples Independent
Republic of New Brighton
been filled with gravel as a temporary measure.
One commenter said she
had driven into a large pothole
which “destroyed” her tyre
and damaged paint under the
bumper.
Paper Plus New Brighton
owner Blair Hughes said
he would like Development
Christchurch Ltd to help pay
for pothole repairs. A DCL
spokeswoman said it has no
authority to take action or force
landowners to address the issues.
“There is also a question over
whether public money should
be used to upgrade private
property,” she said.
