Sydenham has a proud history and is experiencing a wonderful renaissance, with new businesses and residential developments. SYDM Quarter is thrilled to welcome some awesome new businesses and invite you to check out their profiles on our website www.sydm.co.nz – be sure to pay them a visit next time you are in our neighbourhood! Last month we were delighted to host our first “Pay as You Feel” community dinner initiated by SYDM Quarter Engagement Coordinator, Ailey Ong. Food was provided for this event by local greengrocers, sustainable artisan producers and catering businesses, before it “became waste” and went to Canterbury landfills. This was a wonderful night of community togetherness and we are proud to have brought this to Sydenham. Proceeds from this night will be donated to Sydenham Heritage Trust who are endearing to re build on the Heritage site a SYDM Community venue and to house the old church relics and to conserve this part of Sydenham history. Grateful thanks to the volunteers from Canterbury and businesses who made this event so successful – Alan Wall, Briarlee Tutuaha, Jesse Stephens, Jazmine Cooper, Jacqui, Jennifer & Olivia Holanda, Kenny Abass, Teresa, William & Andrew Lindsay, Shane Victor, Marine Mathieu and Verna Curwood. Thanks also to our business support, generously provided by Raeward Fresh Harewood, Parsley and Sage Corporate and Private Catering and Mori Mori Izakaya Restaurant. SYDM Quarter’s next “Pay As You Feel” Dinner will be Hosted by Raeward Fresh Harewood, on Wednesday 29th August. Numbers will be limited, so make sure you book your place on our Facebook page @SYDM.QTR. Proceeds from this will go towards Sydenham Heritage Trust. Our August Networking was hosted by Manscape in Sandyford Street. This unique Grooming Salon even has a ‘Man Cave’ in which to wait for your appointment and, guys, it’s even set up so you can take your son or nephew in for a haircut at the same time as yours. Thank you so much to our hosts – Annika, Natalie, Marine, Georgie and the talented Manscape team. SYDM Quarter holds a monthly networking event and in July, this was hosted at The Fermentist. In addition to our social networking, we were treated to delicious food platters provided by The Fermentist with boutique beers and ciders for us to enjoy. Up coming events coming up in Sydenham The Fermentist is a microbrewery, taproom and café in Sydenham. With beer at its roots and sustainability in its heart, the Fermentist team look at their place in the world a bit differently. There’s no denying that making beer uses a lot of water and energy but The Fermentist is determined to use its resources more sustainably. Their mission is to bring people together over great beers and food, trying new things and discovering how they can make a positive environmental difference through the way they work. Living up to its name, The Fermentist is about explorations and discovery in fermentation. On tap you’ll find a core selection of beers, cider and kombucha, with additional seasonal beers being introduced. There’s an easy-drinking Kiwi Pale Ale, made with Taiheke, Nelson Sauvin and Motueka hops - a great beer for all occasions. For something a little bit sour, try the Berliner Weisse - drink it as is, or with a shot of raspberry fruit syrup as they do in Berlin. There’s also a Red Ale, an American amber ale style beer with a Kiwi twist, and a Dry Cider full of character, made from 100% New Zealand apple juice. The first seasonal beer has just been released on tap, an American Brown Ale, and in the fermenters two more seasonal beers are doing their business. A Czech Pilsner will be on tap early September and a dark larger mid-October. In the taproom you’ll find a flavoursome menu designed for sharing, using seasonal vegetables from their own brewery garden as well as kimchi, sauerkraut and fermented pickles. They source seasonal food from local producers, and preserve and ferment as much as possible to limit food waste. To reduce their carbon footprint, The Fermentist use solar panels for a proportion of electricity usage and hot water heating. They also compost waste, harvest rain water, and focus on recycling to reduce waste going to landfill. They have sourced ethical products, such as staff uniforms and toilet paper. You might see The Fermentist’s electric hybrid making deliveries around town. Take a Fermentist brew home with you (and reduce packaging) by bringing in your own vessel to the fill your own taps, or purchase a reusable Fermentist glass 1 litre bottle. You can also find The Fermentist brews around town at Casa Publica, Coasters, The Carlton, The Bog, Pomeroy’s, Fox and Ferret Shirley, Fox and Ferret Riccarton, Tavern Harewood, Coalgate Tavern, South Bar at Christchurch Airport, and Amazonita. Visit The Fermentist at 380 Colombo Street, Sydenham, Christchurch. – in addition to our monthly networking events, we will have a TWO breakfast hosted by SYDM Quarter for businesses to meet develop a forum to address business condition issues. We have received a request from Dr Duncan Webb, he would like to also attend this Business breakfast series on the 27th August. The next breakfast will be on 1st of October, 2018. We hope that all businesses will see the value of this and will attend. – we are working on a concept to activate vacant land within Sydenham as an Artisan Corner. We are running a Facebook poll on Artisan Corner to gauge community support – please head to our Facebook page @SYDM.QTR to share your views and stay tuned for upcoming events! On September 1, 2018 we will be having a “community day” to view the “Artisan Corner” plan and Sydenham businesses will provide a fun filled day full of activities. The day will kick off at 9am to 10am with a Pay As You Feel “Gourmet food-box”, proceeds will go to Sydenham Heritage Trust. The drawing room will have workshops. Sydenham Heritage Trust will run short guided historical walks (1 hour) starting from 11am around a small part of Sydenham, paying homage to the past using photos and heritage “objects” as to what it look like then and what is in its places now.
