handed back.
• By Anan Zaki
A WOOLSTON widow has been
reunited with her much-loved
copper urns.
Police returned the urns
to retired nurse Jill Walker
on Thursday after they were
recovered from a house in St
Martins.
The urns were stolen from
Mrs Walker’s home in June. A
29-year-old-man and a 44-yearold
woman have been charged
with burglary and receiving
stolen property.
Mrs Walker made a plea in
Southern View last month for
the return of the “precious”
urns which belonged to her
late husband of 43 years Barry
Walker.
She was delighted the items
had been found and returned to
her. “It’s just wonderful news,”
Mrs Walker said.
The copper urns were one
of the few memories left of her
husband who passed away nine
years ago.
She thanked everyone who sent
in messages of support after her
appeal for help.
“I’m sure the newspaper article
helped. When a lot of people
know about it, it makes it hard to
get rid of it doesn’t it?”
Mrs Walker was grateful for
the work of the Phillipstown
Neighbourhood Policing Team.
She admitted “fearing the
worst” when the urns were stolen,
believing they may have been
melted down for their copper.
Mrs Walker now plans to plant
two camellias called ‘donation’
in the urns because her husband
was an organ donor.
“Once they are full of dirt they
will be much harder [to steal].”
She will now make sure her
courtyard gates are always locked
and plans to install security
cameras. The urns were part of a
$100,000 antique haul seized in
a police sting on Aynsley Tce, St
Martins, two weeks ago.
Mrs Walker said she was
surprised they were found so
close to Woolston.
The two alleged offenders
entered no plea in the district
court last week and will appear
again on September 11.
Other items recovered include
outdoor ornamental pots, statues,
street lamps, iron gates and other
antiques, police said.
Detective Karen Simmons said
the alleged burglars targeted
antiques, and the items were
taken from around Beckenham,
Opawa, Somerfield and
Woolston.
Said Detective Simmons:
“To be able to return the urns
to the victim and her family is
absolutely wonderful.”
“We do still have a number of
items that we haven’t identified
an owner for, and we’d obviously
like to get these back where they
belong.”
NOW THAT’S a great story on the front
page today - and a terrific photo too.
Two urns that belonged to Jill Walker’s
late husband Barry were stolen a couple of
months ago.
The chance of them being found was remote. Understandably,
Jill was fairly upset as her husband adored them. They had
major sentimental value.
But never underestimate the police and during an operation
they were found alongside other stolen antiques and property.
We had published an article the theft at the time in the hope
someone might find and return them.
But behind the scenes police were beavering away on the case.
The police played ball with us last week and agreed to be photographed
at the hand over.
A good result all round.
Linwood North kaumatua dies
• By Sophie Cornish
A MAORI elder and prominent
member of the Linwood North
School community has passed
away after a battle with cancer.
Principal Sandra Smith said
Peter Mason was “down to
earth” with a “wicked sense of
humour.”
Mr Mason passed away
“peacefully” at his home at the
age of 75 last week.
He was the school’s kaumātua,
or elder, and a “great friend” of
the school, said Ms Smith.
“He has provided us all
with genuine, wise, cultural
supervision and guidance
over the years. We loved his
child-friendly advice around
tikanga, his sense of humour
and his wisdom around the
implementation of appropriate
school pōwhiri protocol,” she
said.
Tikanga, a Maori concept
with a wide range of meanings
including, culture, custom and
etiquette, generally refers to the
‘Maori way of doing things.’
Recently, he officiated the
school’s 110th anniversary
and the new hall’s opening
celebrations.
“Our favourite memory of
REMEMBERED: Prominent Linwood North School member
and Maori elder Peter Mason has passed away.
Koro Pete will be him happily
singing and dancing his way
down the hall to Poi E at the end
of our dress rehearsal for the
celebrations,” said Ms Smith.
In spite of being unwell, Ms
Smith said he “soldiered on.”
“Koro Pete was a man small
in stature, but great in mana
and dignity. In his later years
he gave so much of his cultural
knowledge and advice to many
organisations and trusts,” she
said.
He became the school’s
kaumātua following the closure
of Richmond School in 2013,
where he had served on the
board of trustees.
Previously, he was a Maori
adviser for the Department of
Labour from 1987 to 1992.
He also had the title of
facilitator at Connections Nga
Kete E Rua Ltd, a company
directed by himself and his wife,
Linley.
It provides networking and
liaison services for communities
and individuals in tikanga and
bi-cultural practices.
Ms Smith said Mr Mason will
always be remembered for his
“beautiful story-telling” to pupils
and by his whakataukī, a Maori
proverb.
“What is the most important
thing in the world? It is the
children, it is the children, it is the
children.”
Funding
for steps
approved
• By Matt Salmons
CONSTRUCTION of a
replacement set of beachaccess
steps on Beachville Rd,
Redcliffs, is set to begin within
two months after a two-year
search for funding.
The Linwood-Heathcote-
Central Community Board
approved the new steps at the
eastern end of the road, near
the Main Rd intersection, with
discretionary funding at their
meeting last week.
Their construction would
allow access to a small area of
beach, a popular play area for
children and for launching
kayaks. Steps there had been
damaged in the 2010/2011
earthquakes and then removed
as part of the Eastern Seawall
works. Replacement steps had
been designed by SCIRT in
2016, but were not included in
the final seawall plans.
The decision delighted
Redcliffs Residents Association
chairwoman Pat McIntosh.
Installation of the precast
steps was estimated to begin in
six to seven weeks.
Lease granted for sports centre
• By Matt Salmons
COMING SOON: Eastern Community Sport and Recreation Inc has secured its lease to part of
Rāwhiti Domain.
THE LEASE is secured, now
onto consents and funding say
Eastern Community Sports and
Recreation Inc organisers.
Plans for a $2.2 million sports
facility in New Brighton started
coming to fruition last week
when the group’s lease of two
spaces in Rāwhiti Domain totalling
4325m 2 was granted.
A recommendation had been
sent to the Burwood-Coastal
Community Board from a hearings
panel, giving the board the
authority to grant the lease at its
meeting last week.
The area leased included the
tennis and netball courts, which
the group planned to relay and
cover with a Canadian built $1.3
million kit-set canopy. The first
of its kind in New Zealand.
Group chairman Peter Burley
said the focus now would shift
to resource and building consents
and applying for Lotteries
Commission funding. He said
the group still planned on work
beginning early next year.
“We’re quite excited about
the next step. It’s a recreational
reserve and it means we can go
in there and increase the utilisation
of it.”
The majority of public submissions
during consultation in May
were in support of the idea, only
seven out of 62 being against.
Five submissions supported the
idea but expressed concern about
reduced public access to the tennis
courts.
Mr Burley said that while it
would have a small impact in the
availability for casual users, it
would significantly increase and
improve the use of the area for its
intended purpose.
“It’s the way of the future really.
What it loses in occasional use
by residents, it gains in giving
them a much higher experience,”
Mr Burley said.
The group planned for the
court outside the canopy to be
available as much as possible
for general use. Only using it
if trainings or tournaments attracted
too many people.
Innovative students turn
your photos into 3D
• By Sarla Donovan
A GROUP of
entrepreneurial year
12 students at Linwood
College have come up with
a novel way to see yourself
or anything you can take a
photo of in 3D.
Michael Venter, Toby
Bell-Ramsay and Nathan
Cummings have devised
a new picture viewing
programme called Bright
Pictures in Colour – the
BPIC.
It’s a platform for
viewing personalised 3D
printed pictures and one
Michael reckons is revolutionary.
“All you need to do is
NO INTEREST
take your photographs,
send them to us via the
internet, and we will print
you a lithophane, which
is a 3D printed negative.
Then you just insert your
personalised lithophane
in your BPIC and
you can see your
favourite photographs
in 3D.”
The three are
competing in the
Young Enterprise
Scheme, a national
project in
which students set
up and run a real
business.
Their business is named
Mike & Co and the boys
have been working with
TECH: A group of
Linwood College
students have
which uses a lithophane
They will be launching
the BPIC on Wednesday
morning at the Gondola
Linwood College business
at Richard Jolly said
the boys had decided
to use the process of
3D printing to innovate
on the idea of
photos and frames.
“Their vision is to
provide New Zealand
with the next generation
of picture viewing,”
he said.
Board gets help
to understand
flooding issues
• By Sarla Donovan
THE Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
has requested an “outside
support person” to
help it understand
Higher Flood Hazard
Management Areas
and Restricted Unit
Overlays.
Christchurch Coastal
Residents United
deputy chairman
Warwick Schaffer
attended a publicexcluded
city council
seminar about the
topics last week after the city
council agreed to the request.
The outside adviser was to
help the board “interpret the
information and ask questions,”
said member Darrell Latham.
He said there were
“incongruities” in city council
policy related to HFHMA which
had serious implications for
residents.
“We need clarification and
answers now,” Dr Latham said.
Darrell Latham
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board was also at
the seminar.
CCRU is a group made up of
coastal residents and experts
who have recently flagged
concerns about how 1486
sites in a Restricted Unit
Overlay within the HF-
HMA are being treated
by city council planners.
It recently held a public
meeting, which attracted
more than 100 residents,
to discuss the concerns.
The CCRU believes a
restricted discretionary
activity rule, recommended by
the replacement District Plan
independent hearings panel, was
left out when the plan was finalised
last year.
Without the discretionary
rule, under the District Plan new
developments or intensification
of land use in the HFHMA is to
be avoided.
Dr Latham said the seminar
was for information sharing
A CASHMERE bowel cancer
surgeon and researcher
has received international
recognition from one of the
world’s largest surgical colleges
in Ireland.
Last month, Frank Frizelle
was awarded one of the highest
honours, an honourary fellowship
from the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland.
It recognises his global leadership
in surgery and comes on
the back of ground-breaking
research from Prof Frizelle and
his Otago University and Canterbury
District Health Board
research teams, who recently
identified a toxic bug they believe
may cause bowel cancer.
The team found a toxic form
of a bacteria called enterotoxic
bacteroides fragilis in the gut
of almost 80 per cent of people
with a pre-cancerous lesion – a
precursor to the disease, which
is one of the leading causes of
cancer death in New Zealand,
said Prof Frizelle.
It could lead to a life-saving
vaccine or early detection test for
the disease.
Prof Frizelle said he was
“delighted and privileged” to be
Kirkwood–Technology, ‘Opportunities’
‘Schooling for the Whole Child’
The focus of a successful school is the pupil. The growth of our children at Kirkwood is
supported by the many extension opportunities we offer over and above our classroom activities.
We work on extending learning opportunities in a number of areas.
Technology
Some of the highlights in our
technology area include:
• Robotics;
• 3D Printing;
• EPro8 Challenge;
• Fashion Design and Make.
Technology is a favourite area for
many students due to the ‘handson’
problem solving approach to
learning.
Extension Groups, Competitions
and Events
Our students have many opportunities to participate in various
competitions and events offered at Kirkwood.
These include:
• University of Canterbury Academic
Competitions;
• Cantamath;
• Canterbury-Westland Science Fair;
• Science Badges;
• Blue Light PCT competition;
• Otago Problem Solving;
• Publishing of a school magazine;
• Art Cup;
• Kids’Lit Quiz;
• Orchestra;
• Choir;
• Leadership Opportunities;
• House Captains;
• School Production;
• School Council.
Music
Music is taught as part of the
performing arts curriculum in
all classrooms, however extra
opportunities are available
for students to learn a wide
variety of music.
This year our students have
been learning the Guitar,
Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute,
singing in the Choir and
playing in the Orchestra.
We also have a Rock Band
which performs in assemblies
during the year.
Awards
We value and encourage personal excellence which
is recognised with our ‘Blues’ Awards system.
Sports
Apart from the regular physical education programmes
within the classrooms there are many other sports
offered at Kirkwood. Some the sports played this year
are Netball, Football, Cross Country, Skiing, Swimming,
Rugby, Basketball, Water polo and Touch Rugby.
Don’t forget, there are still some places available for Year 7 and Year 8 for 2019.
Please visit our website www.kirkwood.school.nz for information and to
From the sports field to the stage
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Matt Salmons
HALSWELL’S Peni Junior Iva
is gearing up for two national
competitions in Auckland next
month – one on the sports field
and another on stage.
As if beginning each weekday
with an hour long bus trip to
Haeata Community Campus in
Aranui was not busy enough,
the year 13 student splits his free
time between his passions- club
and school rugby league games,
youth group, band rehearsals
and training.
“It’s a bit of a struggle every
morning [to travel to Haeata] .
. . but just with how the school
goes, it fits in well with how I
am,” he said.
PJ said he started playing
rugby union when he was 13, but
switched to league as it was “just
much more chill and fun.”
He said it also keeps fitness
levels high.
In early September, he will
play for Haeata at the secondary
schools national rugby league
development tournament in
Auckland. Last year Haeata went
all the way to the televised final,
but was beaten by Auckland’s
Marcellin College.
“It’s such a fun tournament,
playing alongside amazing
MULTI-TALENTED: Halswell’s Peni Junior Iva, 18, is a young man of many talents, both on the
sports field and live on stage.
players and learning off them.
“We’re hoping to get ourselves
[in the final] again this year and
take it out. We’ve got a lot of
juniors stepping up, so it’s cool
for them,” he said.
PJ is used to the responsibility
of setting a positive example to
younger peers both on and off
the field.
On Fridays he volunteers as a
youth leader at Fusion Youth and
leads the group’s band alongside
his sister, Nesa.
He started learning the guitar
when he was nine and PJ is now
able to play a range of instruments
including the bass guitar,
drums and piano
“I try to learn as much as possible.
For the youth bands for example,
people come in and want
to learn and I’m able to teach
them any instrument,” he said.
PJ’s drumming ability helped
get Haeata band Proud Brown
to the Rockquest Tangata Beats
final in Auckland last year
and win the best vocals award.
This year, his duo PJ and Evile
came second in the Canterbury
Rockquest finals and first in the
region’s Tangata Beats final.
The win entered the duo into
the Tangata Beats national finals
- part of the Rockquest finals
held in Auckland on September
22.
“I’m definitely looking forward
to that ... just the whole atmosphere.”
For his future, PJ said he would
study at Ara Institute of Music
Arts with an aim to eventually
qualify as a music teacher.
“My dream is to travel the
world playing music, but if that
doesn’t work out, coming back
as a music teacher. You’re still
working with kids and I’d still
get to do what I love either way.”
Chiropractic treatment promotes
wellness and happiness
Southern Chiropractic specialist André
Grob loves nothing more than to help
people.
With 17 years of experience treating
people with a range of spinal problems,
he has a deep understanding of the
value and benefits that his chiropractic
practice can offer clients experiencing
pain.
A high percentage of the patients
André treats suffer from lower back
and neck pain, followed closely by mid
back pain. He says some pain such
as headaches or shoulder pain often
comes from other places, and it’s
about finding and treating the source.
André believes that not only does
chiropractic treatment help relieve pain
but when applied regularly it also helps
promote an overall feeling of wellness
and happiness.
“When clients first come to the clinic,”
says André, “the first thing I do is to
take the time to find out what the
problem is. The aim is to treat the pain
and make them comfortable.” Once
the patient is better, he says it’s then
up to the patient to decide if they want
to come back for further or regular
chiropractic treatment. This could
be weekly, monthly or bi-annually
depending on what they want.
André says that in the USA chiropractic
treatment is listed third among the
most beneficial natural therapies
available. Used as an ongoing
preventative treatment, it offers a
holistic approach to overall wellbeing.
Keeping up with the latest trends and
developments in his field is vital to
André; however, he says it’s about
what works best for his clients. He
offers not only hands-on manipulation
of the spine but also soft tissue
massage, which some patients prefer.
He also utilises the modality of laser
treatment to assist the traditional
approach and an activator instrument,
which can be used more precisely
instead of hands.
Over the years André has successfully
treated an extensive client base
with ages ranging from school-age
children through to 90+ year-olds. He
enjoys the down-to-earth professional
relationships he has with each patient
and says delivering the chiropractic
service and getting people better is
what it’s all about.
Also, if he can’t help, he will refer his
patients to a professional who can.
If you have back pain and are looking for a committed, passionate, and caring chiropractic practitioner, call André today on 03 322 1432. Based in halswell at 3 Kennedys Bush Road,
Southern Chiropractic also runs a clinic every Tuesday in Ashburton.
Now
Boys get bitten by the baking bug
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Sarla Donovan
MT PLEASANT School teacher
Ange Tutt has started a new
craze for boys – baking.
She initially set up a baking
club in 2012, “to give pupils
something positive and fun to do
during the stressful earthquake
days.”
It ran in the third term each
year and was originally popular
with girls.
However, after talking to a few
boys Ms Tutt decided to target
them this year.
And that’s when the Boys
Baking Club was born.
After starting with one boy
(her own son), she now has seven
– all from year 5/6.
She reckons it was the rebrand
which made the difference.
“As soon as I named it Boys
Baking the boys were suddenly
very keen,” said Ms Tutt.
They meet every Thursday
lunchtime to taste and share
their latest creation.
Each week Ms Tutt issues
a challenge and thus far
muffins, cakes, baking with
yeast and “200 grams of
chocolate” have been faced and
embraced.
Prizes are given out to the boys
for showing creativity and risktaking
when baking.
The cake challenge was
one where they “upped
their game” and created the
most delicious cakes, Ms Tutt
said.
“It was a tough competition. In
the end the boys decided Noah
and Isaac deserved a prize for
their incredible decorating.”
She said their honesty and
enthusiasm was amazing.
“I have had photos from
parents, showing me their
commitment to the challenge –
pouring over cookbooks looking
for the perfect recipe.”
All leftover baking heads home
for them to share with their
family (and sometimes it goes
via their classroom teacher for a
taste test).
Last week the boys took
part in a master class with Ms
Tutt.
“I am a teacher – but a lover of
baking. I taught them to bake
sponge roll, bacon and egg pies
BRILLIANT
BAKERS:
Noah, 11, Isaac,
10, Hamish, 9,
Oliver, 10, and
Jacob, 10, are
putting together
a sponge roll.
and ciabatta bread. They were all
looking forward to getting out of
class for a few hours and doing
some hands-on baking with
their mates,” she said.
And the girls aren’t left out –
their club is still going strong,
it’s just run by another teacher
now.
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
Phen Day Dhargyey Ling (Tibetan)
- ‘A Centre for the Source of Benefit and
Happiness’ is the meaning of the name given
by the esteemed lama Lhagon Rinpoche.
The Christchurch people have the wonderful opportunity to engage in Tibetan Buddhist
philosophy and tradition with the local resident spiritual ‘friend’, as he likes to be referred
as, Venerable Geshe Nyima Dorje (Geshe-la).
The Christchurch Centre was started due
to requests made to have a highly qualified
authentic Tibetan Buddhist teacher
residing in the city and carrying out weekly
teachings, meditation classes and retreats.
Fulfilling this request Geshe-la now teaches
every Tuesday night and Sunday morning.
• Geshe-la graduated from the largest
Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the
world, Sera Monastic University
in South India. His main teachers
included His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
the late Venerable Khensur Urgyen
Tseten, Venerable Khensur Kangurwa
Lobsang Thupten and Venerable
Khenpo Lobsang Palden.
• Geshe-la arrived in New Zealand in
2008 teaching originally in Dunedin
then through requests moved to
Christchurch 2011, ever since proving
to be lively and entertaining, fresh
and eloquent. Certainly he is very
experienced, having taught younger
monks in the monastery, in his home
region of Tibet and for 3 years in
the traditionally Tibetan-Buddhist
country of Mongolia. Having Geshela
to teach in Christchurch therefore,
is quite a wonderful opportunity for
people to make a deep connection
with age-old teachings.
• At the Centre Geshe-la’s classes focus
on understanding the mind, mind
training and meditation practices.
ADVERTORIAL
Meditation & Mind Training;
• How to generate love, compassion,
generosity and patience. The purpose
is to create a peaceful mind. When
our mind is disturbed it lacks love,
compassion and patience. If we know
how to generate these qualities we
can create a more peaceful mind. We
have accustomed our minds more to
disturbances. We know that as we can
see how easy it is to become angry and
how much effort is needed to remain
patient. Familiarisation is the key.
Also if we apply our understanding
to our own situation; we need to
be loved and if we need this then it
is fair to say others also want to be
loved. If we generate this to others
then we gain the benefits, as we then
receive love and compassion. ‘Others’
mean all beings, if we have this
mental expansion there are enormous
benefits.
• As long as we have strong compassion
we have more patience, from this we
don’t get angry as quickly or as easily
then we have peace of mind.
• The Mind Training constitutes these
kinds of practices, learning and
practicing how to become acquainted
with these qualities of mind, so that
arises spontaneously, or at least are
generated more easily.
WOOLSTON Boxing
Club came back with
seven titles from the
central North Island
novice championships in
Rotorua.
The nine-strong team
used the event as preparation
for the New Zealand
Golden Gloves in Hornby
in October. The Canterbury
team will be named
on September 9 for that
event, which means each
boxer was eager to push
their claim against fighters
from Hastings, Hamilton
and Auckland.
In the elite class bouts,
Trevor Swainson won the
under-91kg title, Oliver
Bristowe the under-81kg
title, Chrissy Reid the
80kg-plus women’s title,
and Beulah Paris the
under-69kg women’s title.
Byron Antal and
the junior 80kg-plus
and under-59kg titles
has had his first taste of
international competition
at the sport’s Junior
Commonwealth Games in
England.
The 20-year-old, who
lives in Bishopdale,
finished 34th overall at
the games.
“I think the result was
a fair reflection of where
I’ve been in the lead-up to
the event,” James said.
“I’ve had injuries to
both my knees and the
competition was very
strong.”
He said he spends eight
He said he has
“I’m not
I’m very busy
and I’m hopeful
I’ll get more
The former social
he took up the sport in
“We are now seven
“I couldn’t be happier
with how the tournament
went,” she said.
“We had a number of
really good wins and it
was a chance for some of
our newer boxers to test
themselves against new
them as they progress.”
The team will now compete
on September
8 in a last ditch attempt
to impress the Canterbury
selectors before the
Golden Gloves squad is
announced the next day.
“I thought it could be
fun and from there it’s
gone on and swallowed up
my life,” he said.
“It’s a sport of sharp
‘To Think’
‘A mark, a sign.’
‘Anything serving as a reminder – token of rememberance”
Little River Gallery shows for the second time a collaborative exhibition by Robin Slow (painting), Brian Flintoff
(carving) and Bob Bickerton (soundscape). This year they follow on in the tradition of visually forwarding
histories and stories to be reflected on and become immersed in.
Proudly supporting JBnZ for over 50 years
Robin Slow an artist whose work is also held in private collections, galleries and marae throughout the country
has used paint to create traditional forms used in conjunction with natural forms. The method of producing the
work has a traditional background but there has been an evolving of techniques and materials. This series of
works takes some traditional tohu, be it in the form of the composition, the patterns created or the creatures. It
explores the past and present to produce another tohu and that is the sign towards the future.
For many years, Brian Flintoff has created taonga puoro (musical instruments) for players and musicians
throughout the country. Not only do these create unique sounds but he has carved into them the stories and
histories that are woven into their function. His works are held in many major galleries throughout the world as
well as collections and marae here in Aotearoa.
From the painted images, carvings and reference points each has used in their works, Bob Bickerton created a
CD to enhance aspects visually but aurally as well to form a piece to be contemplated on and be enriched by.
Tohu (signs) surround us manifesting before and through our differing senses. Presented as a-tinana
own spring making this versatile property
suitable for a diverse number of uses or
alternatively a great lifestyle property for a
family.
There is also a very tidy modern 2
bedroom cottage set well away from the
main house and also enjoying privacy and
lovely views, ideal as a homestay, Airbnb or
extended family but certainly some income
potential. Plenty of storage with a 3 or 4 bay
shed, easily converted for horses, mature
walnut trees and plenty of places to explore.
Seldom do properties like this come
to the market, here is the chance only 30
minutes’ drive from town to live the dream
and if you desire to be semi self-sufficient.
Local amenities are many and varied to
indulge in and in the pipeline is a cinema,
supermarket and additional shops, as well
as the development of Te Ana Marina
at Lyttelton stage 1 now complete. The
local school and Kidsfirst centre have an
excellent reputation and the zoned high
school is Cashmere.
property contact Tim Dunningham of
