HEATHCOTE VALLEY School pupils<br />
Nia McDonald and Jean Taylor have<br />
returned from representing Canterbury<br />
at the national Root to Tip cooking<br />
competition in Wellington.<br />
A big focus of the competition was to<br />
incorporate seasonal produce and use as<br />
much of it as possible in their meals.<br />

THE AUPAKI Kahui Ako Cultural<br />
Festival was held at the Sumner School<br />
hall last week.<br />
It gave performers within the Aupaki<br />
cluster – which includes Heathcote<br />
Valley, Redcliffs, Sumner, Lyttelton,<br />
Mt Pleasant and Star of the Sea schools<br />
as well as Linwood College – an<br />
opportunity to come together to share<br />
musical and cultural performances.<br />
The annual event gives kapa haka<br />
groups the chance to practice their<br />
The year 6 pupils received a score of<br />
87/100 from the judges, which included<br />
television chef Al Brown.<br />
They made a yam and kumara creole<br />
gratin and an apple and rhubarb crumble<br />
with lemon, honey and walnuts.<br />
The winning team from Northland<br />
scored 94/100 with a gourmet burger.<br />

Kahui ako (community of learning) is<br />
a cluster of seven schools established in<br />
April last year.<br />

during the school year.
