A Time To Mourn - A Time To Dance
Funerals have been in the news recently, for a variety of reasons. In July there
was a Sky news reporter who had asked friends and colleagues to ‘wear black’
to his 55-year-old wife’s funeral, not Hawaiian shirts. He felt it was unfair on
his children to insist that a funeral should mean rejoicing in a life now passed.
Instead, he felt wearing black gives ‘licence’ to be upset. Various radio call-ins
picked up on this topic, and the question was raised whether contemporary
culture tries to ‘cover up’ death and mourning.
What seems clear is that many people desire and appreciate a personalised
approach to funeral ceremonies. Sometimes the impression is given that humanist
celebrants alone can provide this, whereas church funerals are impersonal.
This is not true, as many Church of Scotland ministers, myself included, will be
very open to suggestions and requests from family members to personalise the
service. Provided you are clear that you and/or the deceased want a Christian
funeral service (which will include prayers and a reading from the Bible) much
else can be worked out in conversation between the family and the minister.
Church of Scotland ministers are called to serve all the people in their parish, so
you don’t need to be a church member to request their services. An approach
is usually made through a funeral director as it is important that availability is
checked before making any arrangements. Church of Scotland ministers won’t
charge for their time, however if you want to have the funeral service in a church
building there may be a charge to cover heating, caretaker and organist etc.
Although most of us don’t like to talk about death with our loved ones, it is actually
a good idea to ask them what is important to them!
Bridge of Weir Community Council
ROADS: During the recess the Community Council’s traffi c calming subcommittee
convener was arranging a site visit with Senior Roads Department
Offi cers from Renfrewshire Council to determine what can be done to replace the
unsatisfactory traffi c calming measures currently in place at the Kilmacolm Road
entrance to the village.
The requested 30mph extension on Johnstone Road beyond St. Mary’s Church is
reaching the end of the consultation procedures.
The Community Council received a request for traffi c calming signage to be
placed on Horsewood Road, this has been forwarded on to our Renfrewshire
Councillors.
MAINTENANCE: At the start of the School holiday’s the Community Council
contacted Renfrewshire Council regarding the overgrown foliage surrounding the
Primary School boundary and in particular the overgrown willow bush on the path
within the nursery school grounds at the Kilallan Avenue entrance. Just prior to
School reopening for the new term we noticed no action had been taken. We sent
a strongly worded letter requesting to know why nothing had been done and why
the Council had chosen not to reply to us.
BUSES: Over the summer months the Community Council monitored the bus
services within the village and our position has not changed, Bridge of Weir
needs a direct bus service to Paisley and we have written to the SPT requesting
this be re-introduced.
BINS: The Community Council has once again requested that the decorative bins
on Livery Walk be replaced with lidded ones as the décor does not deter the
seagulls.
OTHER: At the September meeting we will discuss the Christmas Lights switch on
event with the loss of the British Legion Club alternative arrangements will have
to be considered. If anyone has any ideas for outside entertainment please get in
touch through Bridge of Weir Community Council’s Facebook page.
MEETINGS: Community Council meetings resume following the summer recess
on Tuesday 4th September at 7pm in the Cargill Hall.
