Cllr Audrey Doig
VILLAGES: Since being privileged enough to be elected to
represent all the residents of Linwood, Houston, Crosslee, and
Brookfi eld some eleven years ago, I have been very clear that
Renfrewshire Council needs to do more to invest in the West
Renfrewshire villages, and this I have worked for. Recently I
happened to meet a constituent whilst out shopping and I made
her aware of how much the Council is trying to do now to promote
heritage, culture, and the arts, including in our villages.
For example, the cultural and arts event, the Spree, which hitherto has been
only Paisley based is this year for the fi rst time moving outwith the town to other
parts of Renfrewshire, and many of these artists and musicians featured are
household names. Also for families there is the annual Halloween Parade and
fi reworks events in Paisley for the whole of Renfrewshire, and to conclude the
year both Linwood and Houston now have annual Christmas Lights events which
have fi nancial support from the Council, and terrifi c support from both the local
community and Linwood and Houston Community Councils. We still have some
way to go to redress the imbalance of resources within Renfrewshire but the
current administration is moving in the right direction.
My advice surgery in Brookfi eld is on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:30pm in
Brookfi eld Village Hall, and my advice surgery in Houston is on the 4th Thursday
of the month in the Carrick Centre, Houston, at 7.15pm, excluding July and
Christmas. But I am also always available to constituents who can call me on
07768 130935, or e-mail me at cllr.audrey.doig@renfrewshire.gov.uk.
Brookfield Gala Day
Saturday 18th August 2018
Despite the gloomy forecast, the day dawned
better than expected but given the amount of
rain over the previous few days, it was decided
to relocate the event to the Village Hall car
park which certainly provided better conditions
underfoot!
The sun even made a brief appearance just
as proceedings kicked off with the children’s
fancy dress parade along Woodside Road, ably
led by two young pipers from St Columba’s School
Pipe Band. Following in the footsteps of her
grandmother, mother and aunt, we were delighted
to welcome Marion White (nee Malcom) to offi cially
open Gala Day. Our guest, Sean Batty, then took
over and expertly compered the day.
Entertainment on the stage was provided by dancers
from Galaxy, Houston; our very own Brookfi eld
Brass Necks, who played a wide variety of musical
numbers and members of Zumba Brookfi eld &
Paisley, who gave a demonstration of what they get
up to in the Village Hall on a Tuesday evening!
For the second year, Brookfi eld
Gardening Group presented
awards at Gala Day to recognise
beautiful and well-kept gardens
in the village. The winners
were: Linda Macphee (Best
Hanging Baskets/Pots), Carol
Wager (Greenest Grass), Mark
Littlewood (Best Kept Hedge)
and Lorna Gilroy (Most Colourful
Front Garden). Congratulations
to you all!
The talented home bakers in the village did us proud providing a wonderful array
of tasty treats for both the Tearoom in the Village Hall and the Cake & Candy
stall.
Our Gala Day could not happen without the efforts of a great many volunteers.
We would like to thank everyone who played a part in any way - we acknowledge
your input and thank you all for your hard work. Thanks also to all our residents
whose generous donations to the various stalls contributed enormously to a
successful day. Innis Keith, Chairperson of Brookfi eld Village Council said: “I lost
count of the number of people who commented on what a great day they were
having!”
