Welcome to the wonderful world of retail display and yet 

another innovative and exciting SDEA Retail Display Directory. 

In this 2018/19 edition we explore some of the recently launched, 

latest and greatest store interiors and we have uncovered a truly 

eclectic selection for you. 

Where better to start than Regent Street in London with 

L’Occitane’s formidable floral flagship. In Chelsea we uncover 

Boden’s beautiful faux Georgian boutique, its first bricks and 

mortar store and Escada’s elegant emporium. Bespoke jeweller, 

Harriet Kelsall debuts in Primrose Hill with a distinguished design 

and two equally sensational grocery stores open in the capital - 

Naturally brings the freshest food and ethical values to the heart of 

its fabulous food hall and Royal Holloway Student’s Union dons a 

cutting edge convenience store. Adidas Originals sets new trends 

in sneaker culture in Shoreditch with its uber cool ambiance and 

SEAT delivers a highly polished interior at Westfield. Yet another 

new mall, Westgate in Oxford introduces a plethora of new brands 

and an enticing shopping experience to the historic city. Blackwell’s 

delivers a state of the art book store to enthuse a new generation 

of bookworms, whilst EE’s immersive experience store captivates 

the local techie population.

L’OCCITANE 

Each year SDEA showcases some of the 

most innovative and exciting retail interiors 

across the globe. This year is no exception; 

we have gathered a truly eclectic and 

inspirational selection of stores. 

Starting in London on one of the most 

iconic shopping streets, Regent Street, a 

formidable flagship has been launched 

by a famous French beauty, skincare and 

fragrance brand. Radiating warmth, colour 

and vitality, this exquisite new emporium is 

full of French flair. 

The L’Occitane store has huge street 

presence. The windows are laden with a 

plethora of plants in all shapes and sizes 

forming a botanical garden that frames 

the windows and leads your eye across 

the numerous, delightful instore displays. 

The company anticipated this green oasis 

would captivate passersby and become an 

Instagramable feature, it definitely caught 

my eye! 

Step inside the 6,450 square foot store and 

you are immediately transported a million 

miles away from the hustle and bustle of 

Regent Street into a serene and calm world. 

It is meticulously merchandised, fabulously 

fitted out and skilfully lit. An abundance of 

display props and features fuse seamlessly 

with the product and their well designed 

fixtures and fittings. FutureBrand UXUS 

collaborated with L’Occitane to create a fully 

immersive experience store. 

Although heavily merchandised, the Regent 

Street mecca offers a rare degree of fluidity 

and spaciousness. Ergonomic display 

units lead you on a relaxed journey through 

the brand’s Provencal roots. From soaps, 

face, fragrance and hand care; each range 

has its own display table and unique story 

complete with lavish decoration. 

On the ground floor wall and freestanding 

units are loaded with fragrant produce and 

ensconced in lush vegetation: real roses,

lavender and moss shroud pillars that rise 

from the tables to the ceiling above, each 

revealing a particular product range. An 

enormous central display reaches right 

up through the ceiling to the floor above; 

flowers, vines and lights are entwined and 

cascade down through the arresting apex. 

A further collection of pot plants gather 

around the base, below the counter to 

complete the feature. 

Cabinetry is extremely well crafted, artfully 

decorated and beautifully merchandised 

amidst an array of colour and texture to 

help bring the brand to life. The fresh, zingy 

colours are set off against a neutral toned 

floor and brilliant white ceiling – dotted 

with spotlights. The lighting is sublime, you 

can almost feel the warmth of the South 

of France shining through this glorious 

environment, courtesy of the multiple gold 

highlights which sparkle under the spots. 

Although their previous stores were never 

dull or cluttered this is a real triumph for the 

high end retailer. 

Another ingenious invention by the 

designers is the beauty bar with testing 

station plus macaron bar and cafe by Pierre 

Hermé Paris. The chic counter where you 

can sample hand creams and macarons 

simultaneously is located on the far side 

of the store. Styled much like a French 

patisserie having a wooden base, marble 

top and elegant glass display case, it is 

crowned with a honey coloured, tiled ceiling 

that emits a vibrant glow onto the neatly 

arranged produce and diffuses through the 

store. The area beckons you across the 

shop and invites you to sample its delights. 

A grand staircase edged with gold and 

botanical imagery leads you to the floor 

above, where the atmosphere is even more 

relaxed and refined. The lower ceiling 

and natural wood floor convey a more 

intimate vibe. The gold tiling is continued 

on sections of wall and mirrored above 

the circular bar. There is a café serving 

refreshments and more macarons, another 

product sampling station and a beauty 

therapy area that provides a variety of 

holistic treatments. A dedicated counter 

offering a free gift wrapping service adds 

another dimension to this already divine 

interior. 

L’Occitane’s fabulous flagship is a haven 

of sensory pleasure and is the epitome of 

beauty. Really worth a visit!

BODEN 

Next we turn our attention to an entirely 

different sector of London’s retail 

community. Formerly an online and 

catalogue only business famed for its 

delectable imagery that conjures up the 

perfect life, this quirky yet classic fashion 

brand makes its stunning debut on the 

highly popular King’s Road, Chelsea. 

Boden is beautiful, it’s stylish and the 

epitome of Britishness and its new store 

aptly portrays the quality and status of the 

popular brand. 

With entrances into the flagship on both 

the King’s Road and Duke of York’s Square, 

Boden cements itself into the Chelsea 

lifestyle and fashion scene. It is exceedingly 

well designed with an abundance of flair, a 

trifle of fun and a deep vein of eccentricity 

running through it, that creates the perfect 

environment for their well cut clothes. 

Although set within a thoroughly modern 

building, the shop assumes the appearance 

of a grand Georgian house complete with 

individual rooms, fireplace and grand 

staircase all with what appear to be original 

features (although in reality, replicas). 

Enter through the contemporary glass 

frontage at either end of the store and you 

are immediately immersed in a remarkably 

light and airy interior that appears far 

greater than its actual size. This feeling is 

enhanced by the surprisingly high ceiling 

that is fitted with recessed spotlights, as 

well as the roof light cut into its centre that 

casts light onto the space below. The crisp 

white walls and ceiling provide the clothes 

with a blank canvas on which to shine, for 

Boden is blessed with colour as well as 

style. The dark wood floor then provides a 

stark contrast to the minimal interior and 

further highlights the product range with 

great effect. 

Fixtures and fittings also follow the 

Georgian theme. At either end, panelled 

walls feature large, recessed wardrobes on 

either side of the perimeter walls, which 

showcase clothing hung on rails and folded

hang from the ceiling creating show 

stopping centre pieces suspended above 

antique tables. These display clothing and 

accessories, alongside vases of flowers and 

framed pictures, as if in a home. A rug is 

placed beneath the table to complete 

the look. 

Within the centre of the store a few 

mannequins showcase particular outfits, 

otherwise it has the look and feel of a 

grand hallway complete with a sofa, large 

ottoman footstool, a couple of side tables, 

a glass display cabinet and ornate mirror 

over the fireplace. On all the display tables 

and chairs are found objects to infuse 

an authentic homely feel. The chimney 

breast and opposite wall are painted in a 

denim blue often associated with Boden 

and create a bold backdrop for the store, 

complimenting the dark oak floor and 

contrasting with the white walls and ceiling. 

The hallway leads to the equally grand 

staircase and the floor below. The stairwell 

displays a picture gallery - a further nod to 

the Georgian home, as well as the wit and 

humour inherent in both the brand and 

its founder. 

Downstairs the vibe is equally invigorating. 

As on the floor above, further white wall 

panelling and ceiling with recessed 

spotlights combine with dark wood 

flooring to frame the Mini and Baby Boden 

collections. Rugs, sofas and found furniture 

are used for display and merchandising 

once again as on the ground floor. Vibrant 

pops of colour on the walls and within the 

soft furnishings add a youthful, fun element 

to the children’s area. Glass, pendant lights 

are suspended from the ceiling to add 

interest. 

The new King’s Road flagship plays homage 

to the brand’s owner and its online origins; 

suitably stylish, neither overpowering the 

brand nor disregarding its heritage. Dalziel 

& Pow has created a home from home for 

Boden that is reflected in every material 

choice and nuance of the experience. The 

designers have provided the brand with a 

subtle and elegant interpretation of Boden - 

the perfect platform for future growth.

HARRIET KELSALL 

For our next review we visit a gem of a store 

in a lovely leafy lane in Primrose Hill, North 

London. The well-heeled Regent’s Park 

Road offers an eclectic retail mix and an 

altogether different approach to retail. 

Situated on the corner of this affluent street 

in close proximity to Regent’s Park is a 

hidden treasure. Providing a fully bespoke 

service, Harriet Kelsall’s first London store 

provides its potential clients with a window 

into their exquisite jewellery, as well as their 

creative capabilities. 

Everything in this store is custom made - 

that goes for both the product and the store 

fixtures. Handcrafted to the customers’ 

individual specifications, the pieces are 

artfully merchandised within equally well 

designed cabinetry. This is no ordinary 

jeweller, as well as offering a range of off 

the shelf creations their work is mostly to 

order and therefore truly individual, which is 

echoed throughout the design concept. 

Harriet Kelsall mixes the traditional art of 

the jeweller with a thoroughly contemporary 

outlook that conveys an urban aesthetic 

instore with the use of concrete, glass and 

wood. The design process is presented 

through a relaxed, upmarket interior where 

you feel quite at ease to dwell over your own 

creative thoughts and ideas. 

The exterior sets the scene; a blank canvas 

is achieved in this instance with a dark, inky 

grey shopfront that frames the door and 

windows allowing your eye to glide across 

the inside. A simple logo is all that sits 

above the window. 

Inside, near the front, a small work station 

is set to one side and a designer is on hand 

to offer assistance to would-be customers 

– a small table is dressed with an ultra 

modern, eccentric chandelier that infuses 

personality and charm. A long, low glass 

display case edged with light oak runs the 

entire length of the space and is positioned

in the centre. The majority of the ‘off the 

shelf’ range is displayed within it. The unit 

leads into the design studio situated at 

the rear - there is no barrier between the 

showroom and work area. The whole store 

is open plan which adds to the illusion 

of space, for this is actually a very 

compact shop. 

On the right side a row of colourful drawers 

line the length of the perimeter wall. 

Drawing inspiration from the gemstone 

chart these units contain mood boards 

that provide ideas and inspiration for the 

creation of unique jewellery. As you pull 

out each drawer it reveals a selection 

of mounted precious and semi precious 

stones, metals and visual aids. The wall 

behind is a significant feature of this mixed 

use space; made from formed concrete 

it provides a contrast to the darker grey 

shopfront, ceiling and studio, and displays 

the brand message in enormous lettering. 

The bank of drawers, in their bright hues, 

leap out at you compelling you to take a 

peek, whilst the wording above informs your 

purchasing decisions. 

On the opposite side of the store, more 

functional styled, grey shelving is used 

to store workbooks and other literature. 

Above the shelving another three wall 

mounted showcases feature further items 

of unique jewellery. Other than a glow of 

light within the display cabinets to enhance 

the one off pieces, the lighting is fairly 

subdued allowing the brand’s message 

maximum prominence. 

Even though the designers are visibly 

hard at work the studio retains a calm, 

intimate atmosphere. This new store is a 

wonderful example of how retail and design 

combines to create an innovative and 

exciting experience store. Lumsden Design 

has struck the perfect balance for this 

novel brand.

ESCADA 

This year we’ve been spoilt for choice with 

so many highly creative new retail stores 

opening across the UK on our high streets 

and in our shopping centres. Back in 

sophisticated Sloane Square a high end 

retailer that prides itself on offering top 

quality in fabrics, fit and workmanship to 

the modern woman, piqued our interest. 

Lying at the bottom of Sloane Street and 

below a residential newbuild, an utterly 

gorgeous fashion boutique has recently 

launched - this is not for the faint hearted 

for the price tag is significantly high. 

Escada has created a luxurious interior 

fitout for even the finest A-list celebrity. 

The store with its double height, full 

glass front that allows views throughout 

its entirety and the daylight to permeate 

through to its very core, is sensational. The 

fixtures and fittings are equally opulent and 

pay homage to the stylish clothing. There 

is ample space within this chic boutique to 

admire the collection and peruse - this is 

a non pressurised store where staff is 

on hand but not pushy and you are free 

to roam. 

From the outside, the store is virtually 

transparent through the all glass store front. 

Mannequins decorate the windows and are 

positioned around the store, otherwise this 

is a clean and uncluttered environment. 

Everything is on a grand scale adding 

to the sumptuous feel; from the store’s 

gargantuan height to the shopfittings, 

mirrors and shelving which all extend from

floor to ceiling. Gold, tubular fixtures rise 

up to the ceiling from the hanging rails and 

shelving below. Towards the back of the 

store an oversized, wardrobe style, floor to 

ceiling shelving unit displays handbags, 

shoes and accessories and creates a 

dramatic backdrop. 

Clothes rails are minimalist, using a 

curved, gold tubular bar that creates an 

eye catching installation around the entire 

perimeter. Glass showcases edged with 

gold display folded merchandise and 

continue the theme. Low display tables 

loaded with vases of flowers create a floral 

spectacle in complimentary colours within 

this elegant store. Seating is provided 

amidst the display tables and counters 

where you can sit and ponder, or to try on a 

pair of shoes. 

Natural wood parquet flooring sets off the 

otherwise minimal white walls and ceiling. 

A gold leaf design adds a delicate, textural 

detail to the walls enhancing the gold of 

the clothes rails and counters. A row of 

elegant contemporary pendants hang from 

the ceiling, and concealed trough lighting is 

used throughout the space in keeping with 

the simple clean lines. 

The store is treated in the same respect 

as the clothes: cut and finished to a very 

high spec. rpa:group has created a visual 

paradise within this 1,463 square foot 

space. The designers worked with Escada 

to provide detailed design drawings and 

specification. The result is a formidable 

flagship for this premium retailer.

NATURALLY 

We now cross to North London once again, 

to Holloway in the London Borough of 

Islington. It can often be difficult to discover 

creatively led convenience stores. I guess 

the clue is in the name – convenience 

doesn’t necessarily conjure up images of 

awesome interiors. Yet this year we have 

found two equally vibrant and stimulating 

grocery stores that deserve recognition. 

Both are extremely well designed and 

fabulously fitted out. 

On the Holloway Road, Naturally 

successfully combines a traditional grocery 

store with a delicatessen in a contemporary 

package that is executed with utter 

perfection. This delightful new store offers 

its customers a fresh bakery, charcuterie, 

cheese counter and a very novel approach 

to food shopping that has community at 

its heart. 

Whilst many of their products travel 

thousands of miles across Europe to reach 

the shop, the intention was always to supply 

the best fresh produce and be transparent 

about its origins, as well as being as 

sustainable as possible in the process and 

reducing waste. In addition to re-sealable 

and re-useable craft paper pouches for 

groceries, Naturally introduced a really 

iconic self service dispenser for the bulk 

of the dry food such as grains, cereals and 

pasta. A series of large, BPA free plastic 

containers are arranged on the wall to allow 

customers to help themselves. Not only 

does the system look amazing as a whole – 

set off against multiple wooden slats - but 

it reduces packaging and waste products 

encouraging the customer to reuse their 

pots and jars. 

The modern, all glass storefront engages 

your senses from the start. The impressive 

charcuterie and cheese counter are visible 

immediately to the right side and really 

stand out from the natural wood tones of 

the overall interior. The area is simply tiled,

mostly in white with some green highlights 

at the front of the counters and the logo 

behind, on the back wall. A lowered glass 

display allows you to select meats and 

cheeses. It provides a fresh, clean and 

innovative feature to the environment. 

The bakery counter is positioned beyond 

this and has a single, pendant lamp 

that introduces a splash of green to the 

otherwise all wood surroundings.

On the left side an exposed red brick wall 

runs the length of the store creating a 

raw urban feel, which is framed by large, 

muted porcelain tiles on the floor and 

suspended, slatted wooden joists traversing 

the ceiling. A mixture of free standing and 

wall mounted shelving units in mild steel 

and OSB (oriented strand board) grace the 

left perimeter wall; further freestanding 

display units are positioned in the centre of 

the store and stock an eclectic mix of store 

cupboard staples, pickles and jams. 

A small sales counter is located towards 

the rear of the store, the unpackaged and 

community areas are beyond. A group of 

glass, pendant lights are suspended above 

a large table to encourage customer dwell 

time and interaction with staff. The beams 

in this area have been extended from the 

ceiling to the floor and add to the intimate 

atmosphere that has been evoked through 

the use of quirky lighting, tables and 

seating. Wall shelves are dressed 

with living plants which increase the 

fresh nature of the store, as well as the 

homely appeal. 

This new venture delivers a store that is 

both modern and traditional at the same 

time – practical yet pleasing. Essentially 

using a modular system which can be 

quickly and easily changed to suit and fit 

their diverse merchandise. It has a very 

distinct personality often lacking in the 

convenience sector. 

Designer, FormRoom has created an 

interior rather than a mere shop for 

Naturally’s first launch. Two further stores 

are planned for London before going 

nationwide. If you are lucky enough to have 

one nearby, it is definitely a great place to 

grab your groceries.

ROYAL HOLLOWAY STUDENT UNION 

The second grocery retailer on our travels 

is located in Egham, Surrey. This fabulous 

new food hall is sited within the state of 

the art library complex that now graces 

an historic university campus. Made from 

copper panelling and glazing, the new 

building is also eco friendly, as is the new 

Royal Holloway Student Union Shop. 

The designers, Retail Display Solutions 

Ltd, were tasked with a complex brief to 

create a unified and cutting edge interior 

that would also stock a very broad selection 

of produce, everything from Krispy Kreme 

doughnuts (the modern student’s favourite 

snack) to clothing. They had to develop 

a concept that was easy to navigate and 

stocked all the essentials, but looked 

incredible and would be a pleasure to shop. 

From the moment you enter this innovative 

store its unique ambiance is clearly 

apparent. White, brick cladding and 

reclaimed timber used throughout the store 

aptly convey the modern, functional yet 

fabulous aesthetics. In the main section 

of the store sit a combination of natural 

wood units with plastic shelves and chilled 

cabinets which are edged with slate grey. 

Above these are placed monochrome 

signage to perfectly portray a rustic yet 

urban vibe. The flooring is grey so as not to 

detract from the warmth of the wood and 

the clarity of the white brickwork. 

Freestanding shelving units are lined up 

systematically across the store to ensure 

it stays in the realms of convenience 

retailing. Further perimeter shelving lines

the walls to enhance the regimented style. 

Above the units, the brick cladding brings a 

fresh, contemporary stance to this vibrant 

campus utility. Concise, bold signage with 

single words, such as eat and drink are 

simply stamped onto the brickwork. A 

mantra specifically aimed at its student 

audience - eat, drink, work, party, sleep - is 

also etched around the store’s walls. 

Further bespoke wood display tables 

grouped together featuring special dietary 

merchandise plus enormous oak barrels 

loaded with shopping bags, create eye 

catching points of reference across the 

sales floor. Gondola ends are also of 

particular note as they are edged with 

reclaimed wood that makes them highly 

noticeable and embodies the spirit of this 

store. The clothing section is similarly 

impressive - a giant size, wood clad wall 

cabinet complete with numerous box 

shaped shelves allows clothing to be 

displayed folded by colour. A central 

window allows a couple of items to be hung 

on display and drawers at the base contain 

additional stock. 

The double height ceiling which is left open 

to reveal exposed vents and beams, has 

suspended spotlight trunking that also 

increases the feel of this very cool interior. 

A row of large, pendant lights that are hung 

between the fridge and the bank of central 

display units delivers yet another stunning 

focal point. 

RDS provided a project management 

service to the University, overseeing 

the tender, shop fit out and retail fit out 

during the summer break to ensure it was 

operational in time for Freshers’ Week 

in September. 

This exciting store would look suitably at 

home on any high street – Royal Holloway 

Student Union sets an excellent benchmark 

for grocery traders.

ADIDAS ORIGINALS 

Looking more like the entrance to a 

nightclub than a retail outlet, our next 

innovative concept lies in the creative hub 

of London’s trendy East End. Shoreditch 

has long since been regenerated and 

redeveloped and its retail and leisure 

offering continues to grow laterally 

alongside its cosmopolitan society, so it is 

only fitting that this next store follows suit. 

This is a brand as closely associated with 

sports as it is street wear; its logo can be 

found adorning pitches, athletes and high 

streets alike. This new outlet is clearly 

rooted in the urban community and has a 

far greater depth than its usual high street 

store. Adidas Originals has focused on its 

intrinsic sneaker culture for the launch of 

its recent revolutionary design. Hanbury 

Street presents an interior that is so rich in 

texture, design and creativity it emits a truly 

exceptional ambiance. 

The entrance is far from the accepted all 

glass, double height storefront that has 

become synonymous with modern retail 

experience stores. The reclaimed doors 

sourced from the British Museum are 

enormous expanses of wood that cover a 

substantial part of the exterior. Industrial 

metal shutters obscure another large 

portion from view. The logo, positioned top 

right above the doors, is so insignificant it 

is barely noticeable. From the outset this 

is very unusual retail behaviour particularly 

from such a popular global brand. 

Once inside the retro theme continues; the 

lighting is low, the flooring is reclaimed and 

the ceiling is open and dark. The sneaker 

wall is a significant feature constructed 

from steel. It is definitely a statement 

store that was thoughtfully designed by 

Checkland Kindleysides. It appeals to 

the highly creative individuals within its 

local community - a destination to meet, 

network and bring their ideas to life. The 

overall environment is an extraordinary

clash of opposing styles. Contemporary 

minimalism, urban warehouse and 

retro design bind together to create a 

harmonious atmosphere. 

Moving across the shop floor you’d be 

forgiven for thinking you had entered a 

private members club, so authentic is 

the resulting lounge. Parquet flooring, 

an angular desk, sparse leather chair, 

pot plants, angle poise lamp and ebony 

black shelving create a living, breathing 

retro room. However, at the other side 

of the space, the art of retail display is 

ever present in the beautifully finished, 

bespoke trainer wall, where around 200 

limited edition trainers are displayed on 

individual steel shelves. In front of that, a 

long, refectory style table provides seating 

for customers and displays four glass tanks 

full of blue dyed water, each with a single 

sneaker placed in front. An equally lengthy 

pendant lamp is suspended over the table 

bringing with it an oddly scientific quality to 

this raw and exposed setting. Projections 

add sparks of colour and movement to the 

walls high above the footwear display. 

This minimalist flagship store has just one 

further wall of similarly well merchandised 

product. Opposite the trainer wall and 

across the table, clothing is hung sparingly 

from a white partition wall – just one row, 

mostly sideways on, appears below a white 

pelmet. The hangers and rail screened 

from view. Abstract works of art are 

showcased above. 

This is a branding exercise that appeals 

directly to its eclectic followers and conveys 

a very powerful message of individuality. 

Checkland Kindleysides has created an 

electric experience in this simple shop, one 

that is definitely worth a visit. I found it truly 

remarkable!

SEAT 

For our final London based store review 

we cross the capital once more to visit the 

largest shopping centre in Europe, Westfield 

London in White City. It’s hard to believe 

that this retail phenomenon has been 

trading for ten years. With its new 740,000 

square foot second-phase expansion it 

looks and feels every bit as sensational 

as it did at its inception. Our next creative 

contender is housed within this new wing. 

Whilst it is not the first of its kind, this 

recently launched flagship is nonetheless 

an excellent example of innovation using 

cutting edge technology and a relaxed sales 

approach in order to win new business. 

SEAT launches on the ground floor of 

this shopping mecca with a cunning new 

concept. It’s no surprise this approach to 

car retailing has really taken off; the stores 

look amazing and epitomise the car of the 

future, even if the model in this store isn’t 

an electric supercar. Plus, undoubtedly 

they also benefit from the increased 

footfall that contemporary retail and leisure 

destinations attract. 

With much inspiration derived from its 

Spanish heritage, SEAT elevates the 

everyday car to art status. The walls are 

brilliant white, ergonomically shaped and 

moulded all around. It has a highly minimal 

feel with just three cars on display and very 

little in the way of point of sale or signage to 

detract from the product. The pared back 

interior allows the cars to shine, however 

quirky references to its Mediterranean 

roots are present throughout. The flooring 

changes as you move through the store 

from mosaic, to cobbles, to stone. A full 

size olive tree offers a respite from the stark 

brilliance of the space and is equipped 

with orange, mosaic seating where you 

can ponder before committing to a very 

expensive purchase. The tree adds an 

element of nature and the vibrant mosaic 

brings an element of the warmth and depth 

of colour associated with Spain.

Copper slatted panels, which span the full 

height from floor to ceiling, create another 

layer of hues and intrigue with glimpses 

into life in balmy Barcelona that enhance 

their muted surroundings. The integral LED 

lighting plays homage to sunnier climes and 

dips and lifts to symbolise the passing of 

clouds overhead.

Futuristic display signs are positioned 

beside each car with the minimum, 

necessary sales information. Digital 

screens break up the organic nature of the 

store and help you to navigate the car’s full 

specification details. Towards the back, 

a wall of wing mirrors that showcases the 

paint options creates an attractive and eye 

catching display feature. The connectivity 

bar, also located towards the rear, allows 

customers to interact with the brand’s 

latest in-car technology and an impressive 

experience centre permits you to test drive 

a range of SEATs immediately. 

There is very little to delineate the shop 

from the mall so it is very easy to find 

yourself stepping over the threshold and 

browsing the vehicles, which is where 

the real difference lies. SEAT provides a 

calm, unpressurised environment having 

a serious lack of sales assistants, which 

allows you to fully immerse yourself in 

the brand at your own pace. Guided by 

online research, as with everything these 

days the internet affords customers the 

knowledge, shoppers merely need to revel 

in the experience to formulate their 

buying decisions. 

Green Room Design has created the 

ultimate state of the art flagship for this car 

brand and cleverly incorporated a welcome 

kiosk outside on the mall to further 

maximise footfall. This is an intuitive 

interior tailored to a savvy market.

WESTGATE OXFORD 

For our final two store reviews we head out 

of London to one of the UK’s most cultural 

cities, Oxford, where a state of the art 

shopping centre has recently transformed 

its retail offer. 

Shopping centres have become an 

important facet within society with the retail 

and leisure combination top of everyone’s 

agenda. High streets are definitely at the 

mercy of these super malls. A walk around 

any one of our nation’s finest developments 

will reveal just how popular they have 

become. Seemingly regardless of our 

country’s current financial insecurity, people 

shop, dine and play at every opportunity. 

Oxford’s retail offer had remained static 

for some time until Westgate opened its 

doors launching a fresh influx of brands 

and at the same time opening up the area 

to the West of the city, bringing with it much 

needed investment. It’s not the biggest 

site, yet its design is incredibly effective 

fusing indoors and outdoors; linking a 

number of little used streets to three 

impressive glass atriums, an eclectic food 

court and a terrace that affords views over 

the historic skyline. 

As retail destinations go Westgate has an 

easy, relaxed feel. On a rainy day you have 

the benefit of glazed roofs overhead, yet 

fresh air to keep you cool as you wander 

around. A variety of architectural styles 

and materials enhances the informal 

ambiance and was achieved through a 

collaborative approach, involving a number 

of architectural practices. The evocative 

terrace will be a major attraction on a warm 

summer’s evening – a great place to meet 

up and watch the sun set over Oxford. 

BDP were the lead architect for the scheme 

and ensured that the multiple building 

styles fused together and were seamlessly 

stitched into the City’s historic fabric. A 

great place to spend a leisurely afternoon!

BLACKWELL’S 

A company synonymous with Oxford for 

almost 140 years, Blackwell’s recently 

launched a cutting edge bookshop at 

Westgate. With the aim of enticing multiple 

sectors of society through its doors to 

enjoy the art of reading and love of books, 

the spacious, modern shop is the perfect 

platform to do just that. Having an element 

of fun running through its informative core, 

it opens on the upper level right next door 

to John Lewis - a very smart move indeed. 

At the heart of this intelligently designed 

store lies a life-size tree complete with 

lush branches and decorative leaves. An 

ornate metal seat wraps around its trunk 

and branded bags are hung from a stump 

above. Often mistaken for the tree of 

knowledge, it was intended as a place to sit, 

read and relax – as you would on a sunny 

day in the garden – but it also provides an 

eye catching focal point. The tree lights up 

the space around and its whimsical design 

instils an element of fun in the store. 

Windows are also of great significance and 

their displays form an integral part of this 

immaculately presented concept. A giant 

wheel attached to a model of the Eifel 

Tower fills one of the left hand windows 

and provides a formidable marketing 

opportunity for authors, whose books 

can be positioned on and around the 

Ferris wheel. From outside the store the 

word ‘books’ is spelt out across the entire 

shopfront in large, three dimensional 

graphics. The B however doubles as the 

Blackwell’s logo, the detailed design being 

displayed here in extremely large format 

with the wheel serving as an ‘O’. It captures 

the imagination before even entering and 

emphasizes what’s inside. 

The store is well lit, the ceiling left open 

with numerous, giant size, suspended white 

panels having sunken spots and additional 

track lighting to wash light through the 

space. The freestanding, neat, light oak 

shelving units are positioned at angles to

assist your passage and are interspersed 

with low level display tables for showcasing 

various book related gifts and accessories. 

As you would expect perimeter units also 

in light oak line the walls and provide 

additional shelving. The children’s area is 

clearly marked out on the right side and is 

visible from outside; fake stepping stones 

create a path through a mock grass area 

that is fitted out with accessible shelving 

in pastel blue, plus miniature tables and 

chairs - all perfectly suited to little people. 

Subtle references to the brand’s history 

are applied to the walls, as well as being 

delivered on screens. A pale wood sales 

counter is also located centrally towards the 

rear of the store. 

The new 3,000 square foot concept was 

designed in-house and has the winning 

formula of a contemporary business. This 

vibrant new outlet clearly highlights its 

reputation for excellence in customer 

relations and specialist knowledge 

and is a worthy addition to this new mall.

Finally, we had the pleasure of discovering 

yet another innovative new retail outlet. 

Situated on the lower mall at Westgate, 

this leading technology brand has created 

a smart, professional, yet homely vibe for 

its new store with the aim of attracting the 

entire household communications market. 

As is so popular nowadays most providers 

offer the complete telephone, broadband, 

TV and mobile package and so it is only 

fitting that their shops should also embody 

this all encompassing outlook. 

The new EE store in Oxford does just this. 

Broken up into three distinct areas, the 

overall interior is a subtle grey, however 

splashes of vibrant green, the brand’s 

colour, are used throughout and in 

abundance at the back, to entice you right 

through the shop. The illuminated, brand 

led, rear wall display screens light up the 

entire interior of this dynamic, multi 

layered design. 

Starting at the front, a high ceiling together 

with an awe inspiring digital feature 

captivate passersby and draw them inside. 

Used to launch the latest merchandise, a 

single plinth displays a sole product and is 

surrounded by an enormous bank of curved 

screens. Composed of eight separate 

panels the gargantuan display shows video 

imagery and allows you to fully interact with 

the brand. The circular area created on the 

floor is mirrored above with a bright blue 

ring of light that lends a space age feel - 

you almost expect someone to teleport to 

another dimension. It’s utterly fantastic. 

At the centre of the store, the help HUB 

complete with animated icons has a black 

backdrop that highlights the multiple 

screens which encourage exploration of 

the retail offer. This section has a lowered 

ceiling creating an intimate atmosphere 

where seating and tables encourage further 

research. A bar style counter complete 

with stools, powder coated in the bright

brand colour, is positioned away from the 

walls encouraging people to walk around 

and lean in for a chat. It offers an informal 

means of communication. Smaller, round, 

cafe style tables and chairs are situated to 

the left and allow for private discussions, 

their equally informal nature reinforces 

this relaxed environment. Finally, on the 

left perimeter wall comfy, stylish booths 

face large screens permitting customers to 

try out the full range of services in a semi 

home-style setting. A central, pendant lamp 

hangs from the ceiling in each booth. 

Although, traditionally, product would be 

located throughout the store starting at 

the front, EE showcases its products at 

the back. Each manufacturer has its own 

dedicated and illuminated wall display 

graphics where phones and tablets are 

arranged sparsely below on narrow, side 

table type, display units. A liberal number 

of smart, freestanding, coordinating display 

tables grace the rear section and showcase 

peripheral items such as watches, cases 

and chargers. Another difference in this 

innovative interior is the lack of an official 

sales desk – EE’s instore mobile POS 

system encourages staff and customers 

to transact freely anywhere within the 

space. As is expected from this tech 

savvy business, digital screens also play 

an extremely important role and are used 

throughout the store to inform and aid 

navigation. 

No doubt Apple has led the way with 

its spacious and quite simply elegant 

experience stores. EE strikes a well 

measured balance of beauty and function 

with its new concept. Designed by Quinine 

to help extend EE’s reach beyond mobile 

only, without becoming too hard and 

technological, the new store brings an 

immersive customer experience that is also 

very attractive.
