INTRODUCTION
A very warm welcome to another exciting SDEA Design & Display Directory.
As always, we uncover some of the latest and greatest in design and display. It has been a
tough year for many high street retailers, but we show that retail can thrive with innovation,
strong environmental credentials, appropriate use of technology, an outstanding customer
experience and of course, great design.
Our features start with Belgium’s fully recycled plastic eyewear retailer Ace and Tate at their
Antwerp store, whose interior incorporates waste sourced only from the local surrounding
area. The journey continues across the globe to Kyoto, Japan, to Swiss messenger bag and
accessory manufacturer Freitag, who have been recycling used truck tarpaulins, bicycle inner
tubes and car seat belts since 1993. Moving onto UK soil we look at the Indian all-natural
product chain Kompanero, who have opened in Covent Garden, London. Kompanero, which
takes its name from the Spanish word for companion, sells an all-natural product both
inside and out, including its packaging and auxiliary products wherever possible. Staying in
London we move to Timberland on Carnaby Street. The company has been actively helping
to save our planet for twenty years including planting trees, supporting deprived economies
and sourcing biodegradable materials.
Technology combines with green energy at the new Adidas flagship on Oxford Street,
London, where over 100 digital touchpoints, all powered by green energy, provide a
digitally driven customer experience. Touching down in Italy we visit the country’s oldest
supermarket chain, Esselunga, to view its ‘store of the future’ for their distinguished,
premium offering. We continue our insight into customer experience and technology by
jumping across the world to view the new flagship for Spark, New Zealand’s digital service
provider in Newmarket, Auckland.
In Bluewater, one of the UK’s most distinguished malls, we look at the new fragrant flagship
of Molton Brown which flaunts a rich, decadent environment that takes inspiration from its
almost 50 year heritage. Moving back to London’s Oxford Street we visit Schuh, who, on a
quest for ultimate customer convenience, have moved to a seamless shopping experience
using handheld devices with no counters, no queues and no unnecessary clutter.
For our final review we find ourselves back in Italy but this time in Cortona, Tuscany, to Un
Diavolo per Capello where we discover a beauty salon which couldn’t be more unusual.
Once you’ve been inspired, we hope you enjoy using the Directory to source all your retail,

ACE AND TATE
Knowing where to start the latest and greatest store design
reviews is never an easy task. The outlet we have chosen has
plenty of impact, dynamism, a revolutionary attitude and
isn’t a household name in the UK.
Never before has the environment been of greater concern
and importance to us all. Ace and Tate’s latest store in
Antwerp, Belgium pays homage to one of the current issues
facing our planet: plastic. The interior of this eyewear
retailer is crafted from fully recycled plastic waste and it
looks amazing. The optician delivers on both aesthetics and
ethics, not just on the surface but right to the very heart of
its business.
Ace and Tate has over 50 stores worldwide, with nine
currently in the UK, and this is their third statement store
to date, each being individual. The company continually
works to decrease their impact on the world in every aspect
of their business and it pledges to be carbon neutral by
2030, whilst also ensuring their workers are not exploited.
Most impressively they aim to be producing 100% of their
products and packaging from waste material by the end of
this year! This is where the brand really excels.
The brief given to the designer was to build a calm, serene
space to allow pops of colours to blossom, where customers
can indulge themselves in the brand. Inspiration was taken
from religious and sacred places where strong colours and
serenity are often at one. A recycling temple was created.
The new, edgy store is a phenomenal sight. Incorporating
waste sourced only from the local surrounding area of
the shop, they have created a strikingly beautiful interior.
Almost every surface, including the fixtures and fittings,
are covered in recycled plastic. It is however no ordinary
plastic. Working with designers, Plasticiet, they developed a
material that is intensely bright and bold, yet sophisticated
and assumes the natural pattern and beauty of stone and
marble. Remarkably, the designers handpicked the red,
orange and blue items of refuse - the focal specialist’s brand
colours - to achieve the desired colour combination.
From the outside the original store façade remains
unaltered, painted a deep oceanic blue, it forms the frame
from which the zingy interior springs to life. The window
display is kept low so as not to detract from the inside and
features found items of domestic rubbish similar to that
Page 13
used to produce the display. Toys, water bottles and other
large pieces of coloured, throw away plastic are buried
amongst a multitude of tiny white flakes that were once food
packaging, to create a visually arresting display.
In-store, large neon graphics, shaped as bottles, cups and
other household items highlight the origins of this wacky
interior. Large, blood red planks criss-cross the ceiling
of the main showroom and add order to the chaos of the
perimeter. White track lighting traverses the planks, largely
unseen.
The glasses stand out from their minimalist shelving, which
is also barely noticeable against the white walls. Enormous
wall mounted mirrors break up the racks of product, giving
the impression of greater space and reflect the speckled
décor onto all surfaces creating an entirely immersive
experience. Seating plinths, shaped to replicate the splashes
of colour within the wall coverings, are positioned at the
centre of the display.
To create the desired intense marble effect large segments of
coloured refuse were fused with the white base substance,
molten but retaining some of their original shape. It was
of utmost importance and significance to build something
incredible to achieve maximum longevity, thus proving that
waste can be repurposed and help reduce our impact on the
fragile environment.
I just love everything about Ace and Tate - the colours, the
concept, but most of all, their ethos. When one considers
that each kilo of recycled plastic avoids 1.2 kilos of carbon
emissions compared to virgin materials, you have to ask why
more retailers aren’t following suit. At the end of its lease
the whole interior can once again be recycled. What could
be better?

FREITAG
Our second innovative retail store resides even further from
our shores and, like Ace and Tate, they take an unwanted
product and turn it into something desirable. Swiss brand
Freitag has been recycling used truck tarpaulins, bicycle inner
tubes and car seat belts since their inception in 1993 to create
distinctive, bold messenger bags and accessories.
What started as a personal goal of the Freitag brothers to
source a bag that would safely carry their design portfolio
whilst cycling through the streets of Zurich in all weathers, has
become their entire business model. In addition to turning
waste into wonder they also aspire to be carbon neutral
throughout their business, and have even developed their
own fully compostable fabric from which they make clothes.
Yet another truly entrepreneurial, environmental crusader.
The latest cutting edge store in Kyoto showcases over 1000
of their one-off pieces and houses the first ‘design your
own’ studio in Japan. Customers can choose their bags’
components including the tarp, handles, clasps etc and
begin its construction, to then hand over to the experts for
the final stitching and completion. The entire shop has a
contemporary vibe and a strong industrial look.
The interior is stark and almost clinical in its presentation,
even the treated surfaces are either mute greys and white, or
lined with industrial materials, such as the wood wool cement
board in the stockroom.
Just as each of their other 23 global stores is unique, the
Kyoto outlet is no exception. The Swiss love of precision
engineering is clearly evident in every aspect of the design,
from the neatly arranged tools over the ‘design your own’
workbench to the bank of floor-to-ceiling drawers used for
displaying bags. This retail environment is thoughtfully, as
well as flawlessly, put together. It deftly fuses old and new to
create an industrial masterpiece. Even its location close to
both the ancient Nishiki Market and the modern metropolitan
Nakagyo-ku pedestrian precinct was carefully selected to
mirror the founders’ passion for the used wabi-sabi aesthetic
look, as well as their more ethical sustainable values.
The 97sqm space was initially two separate dwellings that
were converted to form a whole that, incidentally, still retains
two distinct styles. One building was primarily reinforced
concrete, whilst the other was steel. The previous shopfronts
were demolished and replaced with a glass facade to
welcome the outside street instore. Supporting concrete
pillars, stripped bare and left unfinished, traverse the central
space, alongside their steel counterparts. Some of the original
structure’s bare brick walls are also exposed with the resin
floor extending the industrial feel.
Page 16
The ceiling has different finishes; the steel panelling remains
exposed in one area, whilst the concrete ceiling and beams in
the other part are painted white.
The showroom resides in the reinforced concrete sector and is
designed to increase dwell time. It is much more refined and
has a gallery quality about it. In addition to the white ceiling
and minimalist strip lighting, the walls are lined with custom
made, uniform drawers that can be extracted to display the
product. A large industrial styled island workbench, also hand
crafted, sports a rubber top and is finished to perfection. An
angular pendant light suspended directly above sheds light
onto the counter, where items can be thoroughly examined
prior to purchase. A functional seating area has been centrally
positioned beyond the workbench.
attached. The industrial shelving covers one half, whilst grey
pegboard covers the remainder, both racks are merchandised
with products to add a splash of colour and a dash of drama
to the otherwise muted interior. The warehouse itself can be
accessed in between the two display units. The ‘design your
own’ station, complete with a steel workbench and machines
for the trade, resides at the back of the store. The wall behind
also utilises pegboard where the fabrics, tools and accessories
are to hand. In the window, a freestanding table that appears
to be constructed from numerous packaging cartons is
topped with a glass sheet and becomes a striking display
feature, elevating the bag to art status. Finally, on the store’s
exterior a life-size truck has been outlined in black against the
white walls - a nod to the origin of every individual specimen
within the shop.
Whilst equally well defined, the other side of the store has
a much more rugged, raw feel. The perimeter is lined with
rough wood panels where shelving and pegboard have been
This store is unique in every way, as are its founders, who are
constantly seeking new ways to break the mould - replenish,
rejuvenate, upcycle, repurpose – true innovators in every
sense. It’s an awesome experience.

KOMPANERO
What begun as simply selecting the ‘best’ stores to lead in
with this year, has developed into a bit of a trend as we are
about to cover our third environmentally friendly retailer.
This fabulous fitout has a string of highly impressive green
credentials to which it adheres: sustainable stores, plastic
free products, cotton lining and packaging, vegetable tanned
leather and ethical working practices. And, to top it all their
first flagship on UK soil looks fantastic.
Barber Design has created a great looking boutique for
Kompanero that seamlessly fuses mainstream and niche - for
their business fulfils both disciplines. Although a member
of the fashion industry - one of the largest pollutants in our
global economy - just like our previous two reviews this
Indian chain is leading the way with its responsible business
practices. Sustainable fashion has yet to peak.
Kompanero, which takes its name from the Spanish word
for companion, sells an all-natural product both inside and
out, including its packaging and auxiliary products wherever
possible. 90% of the leather used to make the bags, shoes
and accessories is vegetable tanned in their own tanneries in
India. The leather goods are wrapped in biodegradable cloth
dust bags, which both protect and enrich the items within.
Naturally, the insides of the leather merchandise are lined
with cotton and the company piece dyes to reduce waste,
water and pollutants.
As you would expect, this visually arresting new store, which
is located in Seven Dials, Covent Garden in London, was
designed specifically to incorporate the brand’s three core
values: sustainability, craftsmanship and vintage. From the
outside it is apparent that two of these beliefs are instantly
Page 18
met; the shop is warm and inviting thanks to low lighting
and the richness of the leather, which casts its hue onto the
surrounding walls and interior surfaces. Although overtly
professionally designed, the store is fluid and surprising. It
has an intriguing and unusual collection of fixtures and fittings
throughout the in-store journey. Large, lifestyle imagery
features soft, harmonious colours and combines with lush,
tropical foliage to bring an air of nature.
Every attempt has been made by Barber Design to fulfil the
retailer’s strict environmental criteria too. They employed
recycled components for the retail furniture, utilised low
voltage lighting where possible, sourced vintage Indian rugs
and visual merchandising, and even incorporated live plants
to soften the atmosphere and filter the air to improve the
quality.
The designers have produced a sensual ambiance; a shop that
exudes great personality and vigour. Distressed wood and
rustic metal have been fashioned into an array of wall shelving
and display stands to convey the brand’s ethics. Mid-tone,
oak flooring was added underfoot to increase the warmth and
depth of this intriguing outlet. The walls are painted white to
give prominence to the product and various instore features.
Simple, unobtrusive track lighting follows the perimeter and
an intricate, vintage chandelier overhead completes the look.
Kompanero has worked hard to build its empire, with 250
stores across Australia and 25 throughout India. This is
their UK debut, but I’m confident not the last. Hopefully
its infectious sustainable spirit will entice other retailers to
embrace conscious capitalism – in their words: “Sustainable
fashion is all about being kind to our environment,
responsible with our choices and use of resources. It is our
constant effort to align our actions toward a more sustainable
environment and future, and every small action matters.”
We can’t finish without an example of how the retailer
champions this movement: it works closely with local
communities, particularly visually impaired and auditory
challenged destitute girls, and has built a handicraft unit to
teach them its artisan techniques, thus equipping them with
self-dignity, worth and financial independence. The company
donates 1% of all sales annually to support those girls who are
unable to leave the hostel and gain independence.
This is another great store with equally great ethical values.
Page 20
TIMBERLAND
We now move across London to another iconic location
which rose to fame in the swinging sixties. Carnaby Street
has always been at the forefront of creativity and innovation
and is now the home of another remarkable and, once again,
environmentally conscious retailer.
This well-known high quality brand, which spans almost 100
hundred years, has launched a new contemporary flagship
that wears its heart on its sleeve; this store beautifully
illustrates the importance of the natural world to all of us.
Timberland have been actively helping to save our planet
for 20 years: planting trees - they pledge to plant a further 10
million in the next two years alone. They support deprived
economies - their work in the Dominican Republic, where they
built a factory from scratch specifically to help and provide
infrastructure to the local population is legendary. They also
source biodegradable materials and components – they are
aiming for 100% eco-friendly cotton and leather but have
already relinquished PVC and PFC. In addition, in 2017 they
converted 40 million plastic bottles into shoes with a current
total of 270 million bottles given a new life in Timberland
footwear. In towns and cities across the world, they encourage
their workforce to become involved and help regenerate green
areas. Timberland takes its responsibilities on this earth
seriously and bridges the gap between a global leader and
nature.
In its pursuit for an equally outstanding interior that replicates
its green credentials, Timberland enlisted the help of designers
Dalziel and Pow. The resulting concept has a style and grace to
which we have become accustomed from this retailer and one
which is inherent to the brand’s product. Through a series of
elegant, custom-made display tables and pillars the designers
convey how this eco warrior is working to reduce its carbon
footprint and at the same time deliver a highly stylised, fresh
interior concept.
It is more than just a store, it’s an experience. The story is
told as your journey unfolds through the shop. Greenery and
Page 21
Page 21
natural elements have been incorporated throughout the
store and are contained and balanced to enhance the visual
merchandising rather than dominate – much akin to the
Timberland ethos. The bulk of the perimeter wall shelving
and railing is kept simple, which gives prominence to the
instore features and, of course, allows the clothing, footwear
and accessories to shine. Floor treatments are light and
unobtrusive; the ceiling is white throughout and subtle lighting
emulates natural daylight. Together they further enhance the
spacious ambiance of this 2,594sqft flagship.
From outside, the glass façade provides a clear view through
the store and into the individual zones on either side. To
the left, a vibrant living wall captures your imagination
immediately and flaunts their latest campaign, ‘Nature
needs Heroes’. The display table in front portrays the life
of trees, their significance to us and our ecosystem, and
explains how the brand is helping to redress the balance
with help from the consumer. The unit’s legs, whilst doing
a great job of supporting the counter, are also integral to
the creation – they form slimline glass columns that run the
depth of the top and have been filled with plants. Stalls are
positioned around the table to encourage exploration.
provided so that you can relax, peruse the customisation
range, and glean inspiration from the digital content
surrounding you. It’s a really smart mix of mother earth and
technology.
The organic theme is continued throughout the store.
Further glass plinths in a variety of shapes and sizes,
displaying a mixture of stones, moss, tree trunks and plants,
form striking props alone, whilst others are utilised to
display shoes, boots and apparel. They are dotted across
the sales floor, between the fixtures and fittings. Floor-toceiling
glass columns containing whole tree trunks are also
positioned around the store and impart further information
and knowledge relating to Timberland’s Corporate
Social Responsibility. The instore mannequins also play
a significant role towards the company’s sustainability
attributes, as they are manufactured from bio resin -
recycled from industrial leftovers. Trees in square planters
decorate the interior and in the footwear area a circular
seating bench for trying on shoes has been constructed
around a mature tree. In addition, an area of flooring in
menswear has been inlaid with a multitude of small, white
pebbles to create a stunning underfoot feature.
The ‘Design Your Own’ studio is unmissable having an LED
wall and a lush floor to ceiling living column with all manner
of tropical plants sprouting out. Here too the display table
legs are not just functional, they are decorative, narrow,
glass tanks that are lined with plants. Again, seating is
In their effort to impart Timberland’s forward thinking
approach, Dalziel and Pow has developed an utterly
sensational store that is a fitting launchpad for the retailer’s
grand eco expansion plans.

ADIDAS
Right at the heart of London’s shopping metropolis of Oxford
Street is where many of the world’s largest retailers reside
and is where we discover our next retail masterpiece. One
of the most well-loved global brands, Adidas has recently
launched a truly outstanding flagship in a prime location,
directly opposite Selfridges.
The ginormous store that is spread over four levels amasses
a whopping 27,000sqft of retail floor space. It exudes
character, revels in drama and is a beacon for the Germanic
owned leader of sports apparel. This is an experience led
concept; from the moment you enter through the ground
floor doors you are drawn into the dramatically lit, dazzling
environment and wowed by its numerous theatrical features
and fantastical displays. It is a real showstopper space that
is also their most tech-savvy yet.
Over 100 digital touchpoints, all powered by green energy
(it’s nice to know they support the environment too!),
provide a digitally driven customer experience that is
headed by interactive changing rooms and The Base - which
we will come back to later in the review. You can even ask
for an item of stock from anywhere instore using your own
mobile phone – how convenient is that? The geolocator will
track you down.
The London outlet has been branded Adidas LDN; a range of
branded clothing and footwear has been designed to help
promote the local creatively driven community. The LDN
lettering is highlighted from the exterior and throughout the
interior. Never one to shy away from publicity, this Adidas
site is loaded with confidence, fully brandishing its position
at the pinnacle of the market.
From outside, it looks phenomenal with bold lighting and
distinctive window displays. Opposite the entrance a huge
trainer sits atop a bus shelter. It is a truly effective, simple
piece of visual merchandising. From the moment you walk
in a kaleidoscope of colours, styles and product assaults
your senses. Digital screens surround you showing project
news relating to the latest releases, customisation options,
the Adidas App and more. The fixtures and fittings are
equally bold on an industrial scale and style that conveys a
raw street vibe.
Various art installations that appear across the different
areas have been commissioned to give the store an eclectic
feel linking it implicitly to its location - conveying the LDN
look! The Base, as mentioned before, is another new
development where customers can engage in product
experiences, activations and interactive challenges.
Page 24
It is constructed with multiple LED screens and flooring that
can change mood and purpose at the click of a button –
clever stuff.
Service is massively important to this global retailer and
this outlet is equipped with ample alternatives to aid your
shopping experience: from the customisation zone, where
you can even bring in your used items for embellishment, to
the running lab, which helps you identify the right trainers
for your speed and style.
They also offer a bra fitting service; the ultimate sneaker
service, where you can book a slot and have your shoes
professionally cleaned while you wait and the App that
allows you to check stock, order size and pay on the spot
– no more lengthy queues. All are aimed to provide the
best possible experience. Not to mention the interactive
changing rooms, which use RFID technology to recognise
products as you step inside, so that you can request different
sizes and colours on the touch screen, without leaving the
space. Adidas does it all.
This new store is however not just about cutting edge
innovation. Adidas seeks to use sustainably and responsibly
sourced materials, including recycled plastic, foam and
textiles wherever possible to respect and protect our
fragile environment. They are currently working with
Allbirds, the fully recycled footwear brand, to further reduce
the industry’s massive carbon footprint. Together they
will explore innovations across the entire supply chain,
from material choices to manufacturing facilities and
transportation methods that utilise renewable energy and
fuels.

ESSELUNGA
For our next project we have another state of the art, large
scale super store. Intertwined so closely with our day to
day shopping habits, supermarkets can often be described
by their simply functional shop design. Thankfully, we have
discovered a grocer with a difference.
We head back to Europe to the home of style and
sophistication, Italy, where its oldest supermarket chain
has recently launched a truly revolutionary concept. The
Italians consistently do design exceptionally well, whatever
the industry, and this new creation continues this whilst
also breaking all the rules. Esselunga invested the help of
Landini Associates to create ‘the store of the future’ for their
distinguished, premium offering.
The new site in Brescia has an incredible amount of space.
The marble floor gleams beneath your feet, oozing quality
and charm. The lighting is bright and dramatic; it glints off
the sharp glass and hard steel surfaces. Its clinical touch
is warmed by the elegant terrazzo flooring and decorative
wooden cladding used in the many specialist departments.
This is not so much supermarket as Super Market with aisle
upon aisle of goods; the staggered shelving design leads you
onwards and inwards. The materials chosen fit the concept
appropriately. Concrete, timber, perforated panels, stainless
steel and coloured tiles are all in abundance on an extremely
large scale.
The designers have taken a conventional layout, pulled
it apart and rebuilt something amazing. Whilst the fresh
fish, meat, deli and bakery counters are located around
the perimeter following a more conventional layout and
using traditional signs, the remainder of the store breaks
with convention. Right from the very front, where banks of
checkouts are usually positioned, Landini has rotated the
layout by 90 degrees.

British service.
We are the UK’s largest distributor and supplier of genuine
Tegometall products and offer our clients a range of storage
and display solutions tailored to their individual requirements.
We specialise in supply and installation, CAD design, project
management through to multiple rollouts and relays.
We make it simple, start to finish
The tills are relocated to the side and in their place massive
glass cubes have been constructed to surround all the
manufacturing processes that would usually be hidden
behind walls, thus placing the heart of the store to front.
The very thing that drives Esselunga is its love of food,
cooking and baking and this can now be viewed all around
the store, and even from outside. As is usually the case in
most other retail trades, the windows act as the stage to
attract customers and are pivotal to store performance.
Esselunga placed Bar Atlantico at the entrance, resulting
in a 50% sales increase on its previous best day’s trading.
People meet, greet and see the chefs in action alongside the
bakery and delicatessen – delicious mouth-watering food is
all around and in a continuous state of production.
The first aisle of the store is dedicated to the convenience
shopper. Anyone visiting to pick up ingredients for a quick
meal will find the deli, bakery and dairy in this prime
location; linking produce and protein to provide everything
needed for a healthy meal. Another noticeable difference
in this sleek shop is minimal signage; food racks follow a
triangulated design towards the rear of the shop and the
produce fans out before you and guides you through the
rows. It is an intuitive way of shopping resulting in a far
more relaxed experience, increasing dwell time.
Further change is found at the repositioned checkouts,
where enormous screens have been erected overhead and
show Esselunga’s many other manufacturing systems in
action. The bulk of the freestanding and perimeter units and
cabinets are stainless steel with blue panels incorporating
signage above the chilled sections. Wooden staging is
topped with green panels in the bakery and fresh fruit and
veg areas, with the drinks zone also utlising wooden décor,
plus deep red header boards denoting the various grapes.
Finally, the café area is finished in a wealth of wood but
incorporates vibrant blue tiling running the length of its
counter. This is mirrored in the eating hall, where deep blue
benches and wood effect tables are laid out.
This is a formidable, supersize store that is both
contemporary and elegant – a breath of fresh air for food
retailing.
Page 28
SPARK
Over the years SDEA has covered numerous technology
retailers launching new stores, as well as first time sellers
debuting on the high street. Each and every project has
fascinated us with its highly innovative and exciting retail
interior, however it is nothing less than you’d expect from
those at the forefront of cutting-edge technology.
Recently Green Room had the privilege of working with a
major player on the other side of the world. Spark, New
Zealand’s digital service provider has unveiled a remarkable
flagship in Newmarket, Auckland, which thanks to the
designers aims to redefine its industry. The designers
developed a new creative concept that promotes a relaxed
yet inspirational environment for the leading brand. While
the design utilises a fairly conventional layout, consisting of
perimeter wall systems, low level, freestanding display units
and, naturally, enormous LED screens, the overall ambiance
has an abundance of character and charm often unbefitting
of telecommunications providers.
Though framed by a dark, sultry exterior, the main shop
floor is awash with light and colour and draws your eye
immediately inwards. The shopfront is permeated with one
very bold neon pink brand logo and shocking pink tramlines
that trace the outline of the store façade. The other side of
the entrance is equally as vibrant by utilising contrast - white
logos literally spring out from an electric blue backdrop.
The front of the store is relatively subdued. The walls, floor
and ceiling are painted in slate grey and allow the enormous
LEDs that line the opposite walls to take precedence and
deliver their messages. New products, in-house and partner
marketing initiatives and a fully integrated promotional
lifecycle strategy ensure both the shop and the brand are
constantly refreshed and up to date. This zone also has two
beautifully crafted, freestanding merchandising tables that
are illuminated in pink, plus a ‘quick fix’ wall fixture that
allows customers to shop quickly and easily for products or
services without intrusion.
www.shopdisplay.org
Page 29
This new flagship is focused on quality service; making it as
simple as possible for the customer to find an item or service
that best fulfils their unique requirements. It is also lifestyle
orientated; with a clever mix of custom made informal style
furniture, fixtures and fittings, lighting and living plants the
designers have transformed the space into an unassuming
interior that promotes browsing and increases dwell time.
In fact, this fabulous fit-out owes much of its warmth and
atmosphere to its lighting and there is an eclectic selection
of both diffused and directional in place. Overhead
florescent strips are combined with track spotlighting plus a
gigantic diffuser. Metal caging is suspended in between the
various lights to add depth to the ceiling. Running the entire
length of one perimeter wall a bank of wooden beams, with
incorporated narrow light panels and planting, casts its
glow onto the sales floor below. On the opposite side of the
store further hanging plants suspended around white panels
enhance the relaxed image.
The equipment has been designed to be highly versatile
and has the ability to change throughout the day, season
or year, making it truly adaptable to suit any requirement.
It is both flexible and aesthetic; a mixture of tactile timbers
and clean whites put you at ease and welcome you at
once. The materials and colours chosen feel very homely. A
combination of light oak shelving and painted wood boxes
are used to showcase the merchandise and communicate
brand messages. Graphic imagery of family life also helps to
further relax you and build trust in this telecommunications
company. It’s a very relatable concept that is administered
with precision and flair.

MOLTON BROWN
This purveyor of beauty has grown immensely in size and
popularity over the years since its not so modest beginnings
on South Molton Street, Mayfair in London almost 50 years
ago. Molton Brown holds a Royal Warrant in recognition of
their status as “Supplier of Toiletries” to HM The Queen –
Master of Household and recently launched its fiftieth store
at Bluewater in Kent.
Natural ingredients are intrinsic to this much-loved brand,
yet this fact is best known mostly to its devotees; so Molton
Brown enlisted the help of Dalziel and Pow to showcase
this. The designers worked to create a concept that placed
the fragrance at the forefront of the design, thus not so
much reinventing rather shifting the focus and realigning
it to a more contemporary approach to perfume retailing.
Nowadays, other leaders in the market focus on the scent,
blending natural ingredients to create the ultimate parfum
- something that Molton Brown has been doing since its
inception.
The location of this inaugural ‘scentastic’ emporium was of
paramount importance and Bluewater was selected due to
its prestigious status. Even 20 years on it still looks fresh and
remains one of the UK’s most distinguished malls in terms
of both quality of retail and design. Attracting some of the
best global brands, Bluewater is easily accessible, readily
shoppable and totally leisure centred - a prerequisite of
contemporary shopping – and the perfect place to launch a
ground-breaking concept such as this.
The new fragrant flagship flaunts a rich, decadent
environment that takes inspiration from its heritage.
Dalziel and Pow developed a luxurious shop that embodies
the natural fragrances inherent in the product. A store
that is rich in colour, warm in tone and full of ambiance,
one that visually paints a picture of the retailer’s core
values. Adopting a ‘Made in England’ approach, the new
design aesthetic embodies this earth-born ethos with
an abundance of bespoke stained wood, woven rattan
cabinets and flourishing plants. The designers take care to
a new level, where every little detail has been sensitively
considered: from the warm, energy-conscious lighting to
the British furnishing, manufactured in Haverhill, Suffolk.
Rich chocolate brown cabinetry compliments the brand’s
signature dark green, conveyed through velvet seating and a
multitude of living plants.
This compact store packs a punch - you can almost seize the
heady bouquet of aromas on a sunny summer’s day. It is
both incredibly well merchandised - the layout pricks your
curiosity and leads you intuitively around - and remarkably
clever. The new fragrance bar, which is sited purposefully at
the front to entice customers in-store, allows you to discover
and sample your unique fragrance. Utilising an ingenious
piece of technology, which is embedded into their website
and projected here onto the counter, it leads you on an
interactive, sensual journey - matching your personality to
your ultimate scent.
Page 32
enquiries@sdea.co.uk
The ergonomically shaped showcase encourages browsing.
The marbling effect has been hand painted in their
house colour and references its culture. The perfumes
are displayed on tiers around the spherical unit and its
modular style delivers the capacity to add further products
as and when required. Reminiscent of a Fabergé egg the
domelike top section is suspended overhead and internally
illuminated to shower light onto the exquisite bottles below.
Supporting rods frame individual lenses that feature the
story of the perfume and mimic their iconic ‘lens’ design.
It is a beautiful piece that fuels the senses and promotes
exploration.
However, even greater depths of colour and style also lie
within. Take for instance the beauty bar, where by day
customers can receive a complimentary hand and arm
massage over a marble sink, yet by night the sink is covered.
The sleek marble counter becomes an events hotspot,
where drinks can be served and enjoyed. At the far end of
the store a VIP area has been created with plush, dark green
velvet booth style seating, a round table and an elaborate
chandelier overhead. This snug space is reserved for
pre-bookable private beauty consultations. The dramatic
floor to ceiling shelving that resembles a library is where
Molton Brown houses its many collections and is decorated
with a handpicked selection of 1970’s inspired ornaments,
heritage photography and campaign imagery. These lines
are arranged according to fragrance, resulting in colourcoded
sections that make it easier for customers to discover
the product that they are looking for. In addition, there is a
refills section and a dedicated gift-wrapping station, where
staff embellish your chosen luxuries with beautiful bespoke
touches.
This latest outlet heralds a new design direction in this
premium brand’s portfolio, which honours the retailer and
reframes it for the Millennials, and is one which they hope
will propel it forwards. This new look perfectly blends
longevity, history and quality - essential for a successful,
sustainable future!

Page 33
SCHUH
As we head back to Oxford Street in London, we uncover
another estimable retailer that has launched a future proof
design concept. This super-sized, super-styled shoe shop
is nothing less than stunning having a department store
approach to retailing, where the footwear is organised by
brand rather than product type.
The incredibly spacious, single level, capital flagship provides
a fitting environment for this beloved brand. Like Molton
Brown, Schuh has been in business for many years – it opened
its first store in Edinburgh in 1981 – and has come a long way
since then, it now has over 100!
Synonymous with quality, fashion-led footwear, the brand’s
target market is the Gen Z population and therefore it was
imperative that the new destination delivered a digitised,
experiential interior.
In the process of creating its vision designers, Briggs Hillier,
completely transformed the original building from a twostorey
trading footprint to a significantly larger ground floor
only outlet. Perimeter walls were pushed back and ceiling
heights increased to breathe light, air and breadth into the
dynamic open space. They developed an entirely custom
made system that allows for multiple modifications, has a
built-in events zone and utilises maximum digital technology.
At the rear of the shop an enormous screen assumes the
focal point and draws the crowds in, whilst numerous smaller
screens are located throughout the new layout and infuse
pops of colour onto the largely monotone canvas.
On a quest for ultimate customer convenience, Schuh also
moved to a seamless shopping experience using handheld
devices, so no counters, no queues, nor unnecessary clutter.
The entrance is streamlined and bold too; your journey begins
immediately on entry, where well merchandised counters
are presented for your perusal. The floor and walls of this
pristine outlet are pale grey and perimeter shelving is barely
distinguishable from its background (minus the stock), adding
to the sense of openness. The instore furniture consists of
a series of different size and various height wooden plinths.
Page 34
Page 34
Virtually all of the units are kept
well below eye level, which further
enhances the fluidity of the area.
They are multifunctional and
adaptable for a range of uses:
product displays, mirrors, window
features and kiosk stations.
Overhead, a series of illuminated
arches traverse the store and
highlight individual branded
sections. These narrow strips
of light run across the black
ceiling adding a touch of drama.
Otherwise, only spotlights
permeate the vast expanse
of dark ceiling. The bespoke,
interchangeable display system
extends between the arches and
consists of moveable components
to provide maximise flexibility. A
hero cube, as it’s been named,
constructed as part of the design
is positioned at the front of the
store to accommodate brand
take-overs, activation and
exclusive instore events. You can’t
fail to miss it as you traverse the
sales floor.
With its youthful, spatial appeal,
this great looking, stylish,
showstopper of a shop will remain
at the top of its game for some
time to come.

UN DIAVOLO
PER CAPELLO
For our final review we have something rather
spectacular; we have saved one of the best until
last. We find ourselves back in Italy but this time in
Cortona, Tuscany, where we discovered a beauty
salon which couldn’t be more unusual.
Part gallery, part high end fashion emporium,
this salon places the hair cutting experience on
the highest pedestal possible to achieve a bold
yet ephemeral style. Studio Svetti has devised an
exceedingly contemporary interior for Un Diavolo per
Capello. An extremely well-designed space with very
few fixtures and fittings; not a product or tool in sight
other than the pre-requisite sinks, chairs and mirrors.
It’s simply sublime.
Whilst creating an entirely functional experience
they have actually produced a store that is the
complete opposite. This new hairdressers is a work
of art - a totally unconventional take on an entirely
conventional practice; strong geometric shapes and
bold colours combine to create an impactful interior
with attitude.
www.shopdisplay.org
Page 37
Almost framing the enormous yellow cube at the centre, the
entire design is monochromatic and loaded with straight
lines, hard angles and cubic shapes. Every aspect is on a
giant scale, not just the yellow cube. The mirrors in front of
the stylists’ chairs that appear to be resting against the walls
stretch from floor to ceiling. Huge circular domes diffuse
light from a great height over the individual cutting seats
which, although maintaining an incredibly futuristic look,
might not be the most comfortable of perches. The cube
itself is an ingenious disguise for the washing zone; a bank of
sinks and a black, leather bench that replaces the customary
seating are tucked out of sight.
White tiles outlined with black grout cover the floor and
extend half way up the walls; the remainder of the perimeter
and ceiling are white. Black, linear track lighting carves up
the overhead area and reflects the flooring pattern below.
The store front is constructed from three enormous, fullheight,
glass panes that extend the entire width of the shop
and allow uninterrupted views across this artistic concept.
Studio Svetti has created a distinctive, theatrical interior
for its clients and an equally remarkable workplace that
will inspire staff as they style. It is an undeniably chic
environment and is the last, but by no means least, of our
innovative and exciting project reviews for this edition.

Q&A – CO-OP
Please give A1 Retail readers
a brief history of how the
Co-op began.
Co-op’s history traces back to the
Rochdale Pioneers, 1844 – these
were everyday working class people
and artisans who challenged the
inequalities and social injustices of
the time. In addition, they set down
the values and principals which are
followed by co-operatives around
the world today. Last year marked
Co-op’s 175th anniversary, and
co-operating for a fairer world
remains at our core.
Today, the Co-op has around
4.6M members, and alongside 2,600
food stores, its interests include
Funeralcare, Insurance, Health and
Legal Services.
At a time of store closures, Co-op
is opening new stores. What is
your secret?
Ease, speed and convenience are
increasingly important for shoppers,
with many relying on their local
community store for a quick and easy
shop which meets their needs. The
Co-op will open around 65 new and
extended stores this year, with more
than 100 existing stores transformed
to better serve their communities.
Shoppers now rely on their
local convenience store not just
for groceries, but also for a range
of services. Co-op is working with
partners including Amazon Lockers
and John Lewis Click & Collect as
well as offering even more ways to
get your groceries from Co-op, such
as our own online shop and home
delivery with our partners, Deliveroo,
Buymie (available in Bristol) and
Pinga (East London).
How have you made your stores
safe for staff and customers alike,
including the increase in anti-social
behaviour?
Safety is a number one priority.
Our frontline colleagues in stores,
supply chains and distribution
have been amazing throughout the
pandemic – they really have been
local heroes. We continue to have
very strict measures in place and
of course, follow all guidance. This
includes priority shopping times,
restricting the numbers of shoppers
in-store when necessary, visors, face
coverings and the installation of
protective screens at tills.
Throughout the pandemic,
Co-op stores have also gone to great
lengths to support their communities,
in particular the most vulnerable.
Thousands of extra jobs were
created to help to keep communities
fed, contactless payment limits
were increased, and a Community
Shopping Card introduced to enable
volunteers, friends or neighbours
Jason Perry, Head of
Online Development at
Co-op speaks to A1 Retail
about some of the
company’s most recent
exciting partnerships,
and how they have kept
communities fed
throughout the pandemic.
