VEKA uPVC WINDOWS AND DOORS 

- FEEL THE DIFFERENCE 

ARC is a company which has for a long 

time had a substantial ‘footprint’ in the Pattaya 

business landscape and its VEKA windows 

and doors arm is probably its most potent 

in terms of customer awareness. 

VEKA offers a range of window and door 

installation options for potential customers, 

from the highly-rated uPVC windows 

and doors with Insulated Glass Units (IGU) 

with standard double-glazing to options 

with noise (laminated) and heat reduction 

(LowE). 

While the latter may be the most expensive 

initially, over the longer term uPVC 

windows and doors usually prove to be 

hard-wearing and certainly superior in terms 

of energy efficiency, thereby helping to reduce 

power bills and thus resulting in longterm 

savings. 

While aluminium is the cheapest initial 

option for installation in a house or condo, 

it is the least efficient when it comes to energy 

efficiency. Of course, sometimes it’s the 

only option for people whose budget cannot 

stretch to either timber or uPVC. 

Timber is aesthetically pleasing in most 

cases, at least at the beginning of installation. 

It’s a material which is readily available 

and initial costs are fairly low. Timber is easily 

worked and its appearance and feel are 

hard to beat. It also offers a reasonable degree 

of insulation. 

The negative for timber is that if it’s not 

maintained properly, as it ages it can become 

unsightly and, depending on how 

much exposure it has to Thailand’s harsh 

weather environment, it may start to warp. 

VEKA recommends uPVC above aluminium 

and timber for sensible reasons, not the 

least of which is the long-term energy savings 

despite the initially higher expense. 

For example, let’s say your property 

needs the installation of five windows. 

On average, one uPVC window will save 

around 2.2 kilowatts per day, so five will 

save around 11kw per day. While rates vary, 

the cost of electricity is between three and 

4.5 baht per kilowatt, so the saving per day 

could be anything up to 49 or 50 baht. That’s 

close to 1,500 baht a month, so it’s not hard 

to see that within a couple of years or less, 

the long-term savings outweigh the initial expense 

of installing uPVC windows and doors 

rather than aluminium or timber. 

As well, uPVC reduces the impact of 

heat and noise pollution, which is definitely 

a factor of life in Thailand. VEKA recommends 

the use of uPVC windows and doors 

with LowE glass, as this blocks most of the 

long-waved radiant infrared energy, which 

helps keep the heat on the side of the glass 

where it originated, thereby helping to keep 

the interior cooler. 

As for sound reduction, laminated glass 

is used to increase the sound insulation of a 

window. A special ‘acoustic PVB’ compound 

is used for the interlayer and this improves 

the sound attenuation compared to non-laminated 

glass panes of the same thickness. 

Another advantage of the uPVC windows 

and doors with laminated glass is that they 

hold together better if shattered, thus making 

them more burglar resistant.

AIS AND DTAC SECURE MOBILE 

LICENSES FOR BT12.5BN EACH 

Total Access Communication Plc known by its 

users as DTAC, and Advanced Info Service Plc., 

AIS, successfully secured licenses in Thailand’s 

largest spectrum auction. 

The licenses were for single 1,800 MHz operations 

and both companies paid 12.5 billion baht 

each for the permits. DTAC is Thailand’s third largest 

operator whilst AIS is the country’s largest. The 

notable absence was True Corporation who decided 

to sit out of the auction. 

AIS is expected to use the new license to bolster 

its number one position, whilst DTAC will use 

its license to cover expiring concessions. Veeravat 

Virochpoka, an analyst at Finansia Syrus Securities 

Plc in Bangkok, was quoted as saying, “More 

spectrum enables Total Access to offer a smooth 

transition when concessions expire,” adding, “Otherwise 

subscribers may flee to rivals. Advanced 

Info can market itself as having greater bandwidth.” 

Nine licenses were up for auction and only 

these two were sold. 

MODERNFORM FURNITURE 

MAKER REDUCES REVENUE 

OUTLOOK 

Modernform Group Plc, a SET listed company, 

has reduced its growth target down from fifteen 

percent to just ten percent citing a slow market for 

home furniture especially for the condo market. 

Chief executive Thaksa Busayapoka was 

quoted as saying, “The condo market has slowed, 

particularly in the lower-end segment,” adding, 

“This significantly affected the overall furniture 

business, including ours.” 

At the same time office furniture sales grew 

with co-working spaces cited as a hotspot. 

Office furniture matched the residential sector, 

both accounting for about forty per cent of sales 

each. The remaining twenty percent of business 

was from the interior decorations market. 

The first half saw slower growth but the company 

is confident of exceeding last year’s sales 

overall. 

Mr. Thaksa was also quoted as saying, “Performance 

in the second half will be higher than in 

the first half as it is the high season for furniture 

sales,” adding, “The period will see a large number 

of residential projects completed and units transferred.” 

NEW CENTRAL PHUKET 

SHOPPING CENTER TO OPEN 

THIS MONTH 

Central Group’s development division, Central 

Pattana Plc will be opening its latest shopping 

complex this month. 

Central Phuket will open its doors on the 10th 

September. It is an extension of the existing Central 

Festival Centre and so its location is already 

well placed. The expansion cost 20 billion baht 

and aims to give tourists a fantastic high-end 

experience. The complex is situated on 111 rai 

of land and spans two buildings providing some 

400,000 square meters of floor space. This makes 

it the biggest such retail center in Phuket and the 

South of Thailand. 

New luxury shops and restaurants will ensure 

Central Phuket helps maintain the island resort’s 

position as a prime world destination, rivaling other 

famous places such as Hawaii and the French 

Riviera. 

Other attractions soon to be opened in the 

complex include an aquarium, a 3D virtual fantasy 

area and a theme based indoor market.

According to the most recent 

report by the Electronic Transactions 

Development Agency 

(ETDA), the market value of business-to-consumer 

(B2C) e-commerce 

in Thailand stood at 778.3 

billion baht in 2017, the highest in 

Southeast Asia, and is expected to 

rise by around 8.5 percent to more 

than three trillion baht this year. 

The top three sectors with the 

highest value during 2017 were 

wholesale/retail trade, accommodation, 

and manufacturing. The 

wholesale/retail trade was worth 

more than twice that of manufacturing 

in 2017. 

Breaking the figures down further, 

the value of business-to-business 

(B2B) e-commerce stood at 

1.6 trillion baht in 2017 and business-to-government 

(B2G) was 

worth 324.7 billion baht. This 

means that B2C e-commerce accounted 

for 29 percent of e-commerce 

value. 

In an effort to capitalize on 

the e-commerce ecosystem, the 

ETDA is engaged in developing 

two major projects designed to 

help local operators upgrade into 

the global marketplace. 

The ETDA approached the AliBaba 

Group earlier this year to 

help local e-commerce operators 

access the Tmall platform. Tmall 

claims it is the world’s largest 

e-commerce platform. 

In the first phase of their joint 

operations, the ETDA is hoping 

to promote 15 Thai e-commerce 

brands into the top 100 in the 

market. As well, the ETDA wants 

to promote a number of five-year 

small to medium enterprises 

(SMEs) onto the Tmall platform by 

the end of the year. 

At this stage, the most popular 

Thai categories for Chinese customers 

on Tmall are agriculture, 

cosmetics, healthcare and spa 

products. 

Internally, the ETDA signed a 

memorandum of understanding 

with Srinakarinwirot University 

whereby the pair will establish 

an e-commerce park to support 

e-transaction activities. The park 

will play a key role in promoting 

the e-commerce ecosystem as 

well as providing support for entrepreneurs, 

SMEs, manufacturers 

and service providers. 

The e-commerce park will be 

a training centre for e-commerce 

knowledge exchange and holding 

workshops for students, entrepreneurs 

and SMEs. The directorship 

of the ETDA has been quoted as 

saying they aim for the e-commerce 

park to help 10,000 people 

create 1,000 SMEs within five 

years. 

The ETDA has previously 

signed a memorandum of understanding 

with the Dongguan China 

Council for the Promotion of International 

Trade. As the ETDA admits, 

promoting Thai e-commerce 

globally, especially into China, the 

United States and Europe is challenging. 

In 2018, e-commerce is expected 

to trend towards a big data 

approach in relation to personalization 

for shoppers, social commerce, 

blockchain and artificial 

intelligence.

At a seminar run by a National 

Legislative Assembly committee 

on religion, culture and tourism, 

it was strongly suggested that all 

tourists to Thailand should have 

adequate travel insurance to cover 

expenses arising from accidents, 

common hazards and other 

possible instances where a claim 

may be required. Examples may 

be motorcycle and scooter hire 

and car hire but should be extended 

to more risky pursuits such as 

scuba diving, jet skiing, boating, 

trekking, and mountain climbing. 

The plan that is being floated 

is to make travel insurance mandatory 

for all visitors to the Kingdom 

in order to reduce the load on 

the country’s tourist compensation 

fund which has paid out a great 

deal of money recently due to 

boating tragedies in Phuket. The 

fund is in danger of being completely 

depleted. 

Tourism and Sports Minister 

Weerasak Kowsurat backed the 

proposal that would see all visitors 

to Thailand require travel insurance 

as a condition of entry. 

This would help to appease 

Chinese tourists who have been 

hesitant to come to the country 

after hearing news of the unfortunate 

boating accident involving 

the Phoenix tourist boat which 

sank in Phuket in July, causing 

47 deaths. Following the tragedy 

many tourists cancelled their travel 

plans to Phuket. 

The president of the Association 

of Thai Travel Agents, Vichit 

Prakobkosol, was quoted as saying, 

“Chinese tourists have cancelled 

bookings made for July, August 

and September,”adding, “The 

cancellations have damaged the 

tourism business on the Andaman 

coast.” 

The governments own tourist 

compensation fund had already 

paid out around 60 million baht in 

relation to the Phoenix accident 

and was in danger of going broke. 

These payments were made on 

top of insurance claims. 

Mr. Kowsurat was quoted as 

saying, “Safety cannot be comprised,” 

adding that any tour company 

that does not follow safety 

procedures would face the consequences. 

Many Western tourists who 

come to Thailand already have 

travel insurance, however there 

are policies that have limited payouts 

or high excesses, so it may 

be just a case of ensuring that 

coverage is adequate. 

Another plan floated was to 

make available GPS trackers for 

Chineseand other tourists so that 

they could not get lost. This would 

help to account for people in an 

accident as well as help to find 

those who are trekking in more remote 

parts.

The Manila-based online 

restaurant reservation startup 

BigDish raised £1.8 million in 

its listing on the London Stock 

Exchange (LSE) ahead of a 

planned expansion in the UK. 

BigDish will use the proceeds 

of the listing towards increasing 

its brand presence, growing 

its business development team 

and completing the acquisition 

of TablePouncer, a UK-based 

restaurant reservation firm. 

Founded in April 2013, Big- 

Dish is a yield management 

platform for the restaurant industry. 

The platform allows 

restaurants to boost their sales 

by offering a variable pricing 

strategy dependent on the time 

of day a restaurant reservation 

is made for. 

SINGAPORE 

Singapore e-commerce enabling 

startup Synagie Corporation 

made its debut on the SGX 

Catalist at S$0.265 per share, 

pegging Synagie’s market capitalisation 

at about S$71 million. 

Synagie’s listing follows 

Ayondo, a Singaporean fintech 

firm, which made its market debut 

in May. Ayondo was the first 

fintech firm to be listed on the 

Singapore Exchange (SGX). 

According to an official statement, 

Synagie’s listing brings 

the number of firms on the 

Catalist to 210, with a combined 

market capitalisation of over 

S$100 billion. 

Founded in 2015, Synagie 

provides e-commerce solutions 

for businesses in the consumer 

sector. Synagie currently has 

over 200 consumer brands partners 

in Southeast Asia, helping 

them to sell their goods and services 

on and offline. Some of its 

clients include Johnson & Johnson, 

Kimberly-Clark and Shiseido. 

Synagie also has a cloudbased 

platform which taps on AI 

and big data to help users automate 

their commerce process. 

This takes place through the 

e-commerce value chain from 

first order to final delivery. 

The Vietnam government is 

seeking to raise VND4.89 trillion 

from the National Shipping 

Lines (Vinalines) IPO, scheduled 

on September 5. Vinalines 

will auction 488.82 million 

shares, or a 34.8 per cent 

stake at the price of VND10,000 

apiece at the HNX. Its charter 

capital is estimated at approximately 

VND14 trillion. 

The State will still hold 65 

percent stake, equivalent to 

912.9 million shares, in Vinalines 

after the IPO. 

Vinalines’ 2017 revenue was 

estimated at VND16 trillion, 

exceeding the annual target 

by 15 percent, while profit was 

VND515 billion. 

VIETNAM 

Vietcombank is to sell its remaining 

1.48 million shares in 

OCB Bank, expecting to earn 

VND27.9 billion from the sale. 

The sale is scheduled for September 

9 on the Hanoi Stock 

Exchange. 

In April, Vietcombank earned 

approximately VND172 billion 

by offloading 6.67 million OCB 

shares. Vietcombank also plans 

to sell its stake in Military Bank 

(MB) and Vietnam Export and 

Import Bank (Eximbank) this 

year. The stake sale is a part of 

its effort to pare its ownership 

in other credit institutions under 

a directive issued by the State 

Bank of Vietnam. 

INDONESIA 

Indonesian conglomerate 

Salim Group has invested in 

mobile financial services company 

Youtap, claiming a minority 

stake in the Singapore-headquartered 

company. Youtap 

also announced that both parties 

have agreed to establish 

operating companies in multiple 

markets to carry on the business 

of providing e-money applications 

and solutions to merchants 

and consumers. Youtap, 

which has an R&D center in 

Auckland and an office in South 

Africa, is a mobile financial services 

company for contactless 

mobile money payments and 

financial services.

RELIEVE SHOULDER PAIN 

The rotator cuff is made up of 

four muscles that help move and 

stabilize the shoulder joint. Damage 

to any or all of the four muscles 

and the ligaments that attach 

these muscles to bone can occur 

because of acute injury, chronic 

overuse, or gradual aging. This 

damage can cause significant 

pain and disability with range of 

motion and use of the shoulder 

joint. 

Symptoms 

The pain associated with a rotator 

cuff injury may: 

• Be described as a dull ache 

deep in the shoulder 

• Disturb sleep, particularly if 

you lie on the affected shoulder 

• Make it difficult to comb your 

hair or reach behind your back 

• Be accompanied by arm 

weakness 

When to see a doctor 

See an orthopedic specialist 

right away if you have a sudden 

loss of motion after an injury — 

you could have a substantial rotator 

cuff tear. If you have pain 

lasting longer than a few weeks or 

you’ve been formally diagnosed 

with a rotator cuff tear, you need 

to be seen by a shoulder specialist, 

because some of the surgical 

procedures are time sensitive. 

Causes 

Rotator cuff disease may be 

the result of either a substantial 

injury to the shoulder or to progressive 

degeneration or wear 

and tear of the tendon tissue. Repetitive 

overhead activity, heavy 

lifting over a prolonged period 

of time, and the development of 

bone spurs in the bones around 

the shoulder may irritate or damage 

the tendon. 

Risk factors 

The following factors may increase 

your risk of having a rotator 

cuff injury: 

• Age. As you get older, your 

risk of a rotator cuff injury increases. 

Rotator cuff tears are most 

common in people older than 40. 

• Certain sports. Athletes who 

regularly use repetitive arm motions, 

such as baseball pitchers, 

archers and tennis players, have 

a greater risk of having a rotator 

cuff injury. 

• Construction jobs. Occupations 

such as carpentry or house 

painting require repetitive arm 

motions, often overhead, that can 

damage the rotator cuff over time. 

• Family history. There may 

be a genetic component involved 

with rotator cuff injuries as they 

appear to occur more commonly 

in certain families. 

Complications 

Without treatment, rotator 

cuff disease may lead to permanent 

stiffness or weakness and 

may result in progressive degeneration 

of the shoulder joint. 

During the physical exam, 

your doctor will press on different 

parts of your shoulder and move 

your arm into different positions. 

He or she will also test the 

strength of the muscles around 

your shoulder and in your arms. 

In some cases, he or she 

may recommend imaging tests, 

such as: 

• X-rays. Although a rotator 

cuff tear won’t show up on 

an X-ray, this test can visualize 

bone spurs or other potential 

causes for your pain — such as 

arthritis. 

• Ultrasound. This type of 

test uses sound waves to produce 

images of structures within 

your body, particularly soft tissues 

such as muscles and tendons. 

It allows dynamic testing, 

assessing the structures of your 

shoulder as they move. It also 

allows a quick comparison between 

the affected shoulder and 

the healthy shoulder. 

• Magnetic resonance imaging 

(MRI). This technology uses 

radio waves and a strong magnet. 

The images obtained display 

all structures of the shoulder 

in great detail. The quality 

of the images depends greatly on 

the quality of the equipment used. 

Conservative treatments — 

such as rest, ice and physical 

therapy — sometimes are all 

that’s needed to recover from a 

rotator cuff injury. If your injury is 

severe and involves a complete 

tear of the muscle or tendon, you 

might need surgery. 

Injections 

If conservative treatments haven’t 

reduced your pain, your doctor 

might recommend a steroid 

injection into your shoulder joint, 

especially if the pain is interfering 

with your sleep, daily activities or 

exercise. While such shots are often 

helpful, they should be used 

judiciously, as they can contribute 

to weakening of the tendon. 

Therapy 

Physical therapy exercises 

can help restore flexibility and 

strength to your shoulder after a 

rotator cuff injury. Sometimes it is 

possible to eliminate pain and restore 

function without surgery. 

Surgery 

Many different types of surgeries 

are available for rotator cuff 

injuries, including arthroscopic 

tendon repair, open tendon repair, 

bone spur removal, tendon transfer 

and shoulder replacement. 

Arthroscopic rotator 

cuff repair 

In this procedure, surgeons 

insert a tiny camera (arthroscope) 

and tools through small incisions 

to reattach the torn tendon to the 

bone. Arthroscopic tendon repair 

can provide restoration of the patient’s 

normal anatomy with a relatively 

pain-free procedure.

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE 

The dollar rose quite sharply due to emerging 

markets becoming jittery about the Turkish 

Lira. The DXY Dollar index, (an index that measures 

the US Dollar’s value against a number 

of other currencies), rose from 95.37 to 96.46, 

and momentum appears to still be building. 

This move is in spite of the fact that yields on 

the 10-year treasury remained below 3 per cent 

and even fell back to 2.875 per cent. Against 

the Thai Baht, the U.S. Dollar was somewhat 

flat moving from 33.41 to 33.38, indicating that 

the Thai Baht strengthened to the same extent. 

It was another disappointing month for anyone 

holding British Pounds and/or hoping they 

will appreciate. There was some speculation 

that the big fall from 1.4320 to the US dollar 

down to 1.3100 might come to an end with a 

bounce through 1.3315, but all hopes were 

dashed when the pound broke through the 

key 1.3000 barrier. This lead to a quick fall to 

1.2684 with the potential for even more downside 

to come. The continued Brexit uncertainty 

is unlikely to be resolved quickly and since 

this appears to be a catalyst for the pound’s 

poor fortunes of late, the story should be closely 

watched. Against the Thai baht, the pound 

moved from 43.42 to give up the 43 level and 

drop down to 42.29, its lowest level for a year. 

The US Dollar vs. Japanese Yen cross rate 

actually fell from 113.05 to 110.38. When the 

rate falls it means 1 U.S. Dollar buys less 

Yen and therefore the Yen has strengthened 

even faster than the dollar has. The fact that 

the Yen is considered a “safe haven” currency 

at times of uncertainty could explain the move. 

Yet a stronger Yen will not help put the Japanese 

economy, which relies on the Yen being 

relatively weak in order to attract export sales. 

Against the Thai Baht, the Yen strengthened 

against the Thai baht from 0.2936 to 0.3001, 

the first time it has surpassed the 0.3000 level 

in many months. 

Due to ongoing sanctions and the announcement 

of additional ones by the U.S., 

the Russian Ruble took a tumble against the 

dollar to hit 69.03 from 63.36, before settling 

at 68.15. The move was swift and represented 

around a seven per cent depreciation. It would 

be worth watching the news flow to see how it 

further affects the Russian currency. Against 

the Thai Baht, the Ruble fell quite dramatically 

also, from 0.5505 to 0.4901. 

The Euro broke below the 1.16 level to the 

U.S. Dollar and fell rapidly to 1.1335, in a large 

part due to the concern about European banks’ 

exposure to the Turkish Lira. There appears to 

be no sign of a reversal yet and a move even 

lower cannot be ruled out. Against the Thai 

Baht, the Euro fell nearly a whole baht from 

38.84 to 37.85.

MOOM TALAY MAY BE PATTAYA’S MOST 

UNIQUE THAI RESTAURANT 

In August this year the Moom Talay Thai 

restaurant was ranked 188th out of 1,045 

restaurants in Pattaya by the website Trip 

Advisor, with its general rating being a four 

out of five stars. Of 127 reviews on the site 

at the time, 33 percent ranked the restaurant 

as excellent while 38 percent ranked 

it as very good. To achieve a combined 71 

percent of reviewers classifying your eatery 

as in the top two brackets takes a bit of 

doing, as the food business is notoriously 

difficult at the best of times. 

In late 2016, the Moom Talay Thai 

restaurant menu underwent a fairly 

ambitious makeover. Apart from the standard 

elements of Thai cuisine which you 

would expect to be available anywhere 

and everywhere, they introduced a number 

of dishes which are rarities not just in Pattaya 

but almost anywhere. It’s ambitious, 

but the management know there are plenty 

of ‘foodies’ just itching to try something different. 

One of these very different dishes 

which feature in the Thai menu at Moom 

Talay contains quails and quail eggs, all of 

which are sourced from the Moom Talay 

organic farm, situated just outside Pattaya. 

Examples of the more unique-to-Moom 

Talay offerings are Pot-Stewed Duck, or 

Quail, garnished with garlic and pepper 

and Stir-fried Quail with chilli paste (obviously 

a dish for those who like their food 

pretty spicy). 

Moom Talay has so-called One-Plate 

Dishes which are far more traditional dishes, 

of the type you would find in the majority 

of Thai restaurants. Even so, most of 

the ingredients in these dishes are sourced 

from their own organic vegetable and animal 

farms, so the freshness remains. Most 

of the dishes include steamed rice and 

basil leaves with either pork, chicken or 

beef; fried noodles done Thai style in an 

omelette; or rice porridge with mince pork 

or chicken. 

Stir-fried dishes include the ever-popular 

chicken and cashew nuts, fried mixed 

mushrooms in oyster sauce, squid stir-fried 

in egg yolks, beef in oyster sauce as well 

as sweet and sour pork or chicken, or, for 

vegetarians, fried mixed vegetables 

in oyster sauce.

Curries 

are always a 

popular menu choice and Moom 

Talay has such bowls of steaming delight 

as red, green or yellow curry in choices of 

either pork, beef or chicken. They also do 

an Indian curry (chicken) and a Panang 

curry among others. 

Soups, as both starters or mains, are 

well covered with dishes like spicy lemongrass 

with chicken, or prawns, seafood, or 

chicken, in coconut soup, or seafood soup 

with Thai herbs. 

On the deep-fried Thai dish front the variety 

is just as exceptional, although a perennial 

favourite among most Thai diners is 

sea bass cooked in garlic and pepper. The 

sea bass is purchased fresh each day from 

the local seafood markets. 

For holidaymakers who happen to have 

teamed up with a local Thai, 

the 

Moom Talay restaurant 

is not just a great eatery, its close but very 

definite separate connection with the Toscana 

Italian restaurant offers the best of 

both worlds. 

While a Thai national, naturally, will 

want to partake of familiar Thai dishes, a 

foreign holidaymaker may decide he or she 

wants to try the same, but also wants the 

opportunity of having an each-way ‘bet’ as 

it were: maybe order an Italian dish, just in 

case the Thai food proves a little too spicy, 

or they aren’t quite as keen to dive into the 

Thai menu just yet. 

It’s important to remark that both the 

Moom Talay and Toscana kitchens are well 

and truly separate entities. The Thai dishes 

are prepared exclusively in the Thai kitchen 

while the Italian dishes are prepared 

exclusively in the Italian kitchen; and never 

the twain shall meet.

TOYOTA SALES 

RISE STRONGLY 

AS CAR MARKET 

PICKS UP SPEED 

Following a strong first half of this year, Toyota 

Motor Thailand has increased its outlook 

for its car sales performance for the full year 

citing a particularly strong car market. 

Indeed, according to the Federation of 

Thailand Industries, Thailand’s overall car market 

rose by 19.3 per cent year on year hitting 

sales of 489,118 vehicles from January to June 

2018. 

Of this total, Toyota sold 141,989 cars, a 

very healthy increase of 26.3 per cent compared 

to the same period last year. This stellar 

growth comes after five previous years of contraction 

and is a welcome respite for the company. 

Total market share stood at 29 per cent 

as of June 2018, a rise of 1.4 per cent. 

The projection by Toyota for the overall 

market for the full year has been increased to 

980,000 cars from a previous level of 900,000, 

equating to a rise of 12.4 per cent. The company 

also raised its sales target to 315,000 cars 

from a previous level of 300,000 

Further market share increases are expected 

as Toyota’s popularity surges. 

President Michinobu Sugata was quoted as 

saying, “We expect to gain 

a 32.1% market share.” 

Toyota does have competition 

but is in a leading 

position by quite a large 

margin. Whilst the company 

remained the largest 

seller in the market for cars, 

for pickup’s, Isuzu won first 

prize in that market, bringing 

them into second place 

overall. Isuzu sold 86,363 vehicles in the first 

half, an increase of 12 per cent on same period 

the previous year. 

Third largest carmaker, Honda, sold 59,838 

cars in Thailand in the first half representing a 

slight drop of 2.59 per cent from a year earlier. 

This occurred as SUV sales contracted quite 

substantially by 12.26 per cent. 

Fourth place went to Mitsubishi who sold 

41,101 vehicles in the Jan to June period, 

a growth of 26.32 per cent on the first half of 

2017. 

All other makers saw strong sales increases. 

Mazda saw its market share increase by 

40.6 per cent and moved from seventh place 

to fifth place. Ford relinquished its sixth position 

as it moved down to seventh place, even 

though it increased sales by 28.08 per cent 

year on year. MG notched up two positions to 

end up in ninth place from eleventh previously, 

with a massive increase of 111.35 per cent. 

Luxury carmakers Mercedes Benz and 

BMW took 11th and 12th places respectively. 

Mercedes Benz sold more cars than BMW at 

7,521 units compared to 5,558 units. However, 

BMW scored a higher sales growth rate yearon-year 

with 13.71 per cent versus Mercedes 

Benz’s 12.61 per cent. 

Mr. Sugata indicated that strong GDP was 

behind the rise as well as new model releases 

and extra advertising and promotions not only 

by Toyota but also by other carmakers. He was 

quoted as saying, “We expect these positive 

factors to accelerate the car market throughout 

2018.”

COMMISSION EXPANDS 

REPORTING RULES FOR 

SECURITIES AND DERIVATIVES 

Thailand’s SEC, The Securities and Exchange 

Commission,has expanded the reporting 

rules governing holders of securities 

and derivatives. The expansion comes hot off 

the heels of the Securities Act of 2016, which 

sought to increase the scope of reporting requirements. 

Now included in the list of those people required 

to report their holdings are auditors, executives 

and company directors as well as, in 

the case of a company that is in a rehabilitation 

process, temporary executives, rehabilitation 

planners, and temporary and permanent plan 

administrators. 

If the total share holding exceeds 30 per 

cent of voting rights then the spouse, civil partner, 

juristic persons and children of those in the 

list are also required to report their holdings. 


The main aim of the expanded 

reporting requirements 

is to ensure all investors 

have a clear picture 

of those with holdings and 

to more easily have knowledge 

of the movements of 

securities and derivatives. 

There is a broad scope 

of the type of securities 

and derivatives that the 

new rules cover and these 

include convertible bonds, 

derivative warrants, equities, 

non-voting depositary 

receipts and single stock 

futures. The rules cover 

purchase, sale, transfer 

and assigned transfer. 

Reporting must be made within three working 

days following the transaction date (T+3). 

The time limit is expanded to seven working 

days (T+7) for new directors who have not yet 

released their name. Reporting must be done 

online exclusively after 15th November 2018. 

Prior to that date it is preferred that online reporting 

take place but a hard copy Form 59 can 

also be filed instead. 

SEC deputy secretary-general Prakid Punyashthiti 

was quoted as saying, “The adjusted 

reporting criteria will allow investors to efficiently 

monitor the movements of securities held by 

those involved with listed companies. This is 

because these individuals are closely associated 

with listed companies and have access 

to important information through their authority 

before the general public.” 

According to SEC secretary-general Rapee 

Sucharitakul,the expansion in reporting will enable 

the markets to become more transparent 

and will bring them into line with international 

standards. 

52 Institutional investors have already 

signed up to follow the Investment Governance 

Code 2017, which outlines best practices, and 

governance in the securities and derivative 

markets and closely follows international standards. 

Some life assurance and long-term equity 

funds still have yet to signup to the code, 

but it is hoped that they will follow suit. In any 

case they will all have to conform to the expanded 

reported requirements 





‘click-bait’. It’s generally used in a 

derogatory sense, but the reality is 

that quite a lot of what may be offered 

when someone does indeed 

‘click’ on a link may be of use to the 

‘target’. 

Notably, within Thailand the 

e-commerce conversion rate for 

those who do click on a website for 

what it may be offering, is below 

the regional average. 

This may come as somewhat of 

a surprise, but according to a company 

called iPrice, which is an affiliate 

platform of more than 1,000 

e-commerce merchants in Southeast 

Asia and which includes the 

likes of Lazada, Blibli and Galleon 

on its books, Thailand’s conversion 

rate sits at 0.8. This is below the 

regional average of 1.0. 

It seems the Vietnamese are 

more willing to press the ‘buy’ button 

with iPrice saying Vietnam’s 

conversion rate stands at 1.3, 

more than 30 percent higher than 

the regional average. 

That said, the average Vietnamese 

purchase is just the equivalent 

of US$23 while the Thai purchaser 

will average around $42. 

Both Singapore and Malaysia are 

also above the average, sitting at 

1.1 apiece and, perhaps reflecting 

the affluence of Singapore, its customers 

spend an average of $91 a 

time.

E-commerce ‘click-bait’ conversion 

rates lower in Thailand 

If there’s a phrase that covers 

the efforts by companies of all 

shapes and sizes and individuals 

(also of all shapes and sizes) 

to lure internet users into looking 

at what these companies or individuals 

have to offer it would be 

How many bother to vote 

Supposedly Thailand will have 

a national election in 2019, which 

will be the first since 2014. Notably, 

in that 2014 election just 46.8 

percent of the electorate bothered 

to visit their local polling booth and 

cast a ballot. That was down from 

around 75 percent in 2011, the first 

election held after the protests of 

2010 which ended in bloodshed. 

Contrast that pathetic number 

with the recent election in Malaysia 

which saw the ruling party ousted 

after a whopping 82.3 percent of 

voters cast ballots. Even so, this 

figure was down from the 2013 

election where 84.8 percent of eligible 

voters made the effort to cast 

a ballot. 

Even in the Philippines the 

2016 election which saw Duterte 

take the presidential reins, a substantial 

81.9 percent of the electorate 

turned out to vote. This was up 

from 77.3 percent in the 2013 poll. 

Indonesia tends to be fairly 

consistent as well, with 71 percent 

of people voting in 2009 and 75 

percent turning out in 2014.
