A space for well-being and creativity
Fire rages, homes at risk
Renew Brighton
co-ordinator Sue
Davidson and
manager Sylvia
Smyth write
about the health,
well-being and
TE KURA Tawhito
on the former
central New
Brighton School site
is growing into an Sylvia Smyth
amazing community hub.
Renew Brighton was offered
the site after it closed as a school
and while it goes through the
public works disposal process.
We felt our community needed
an opportunity to re-imagine the
site and to turn it from a place of
loss to a place of hope.
Fast forward to a year since
opening and Te Kura Tawhito
has become a bustling health,
well-being and creativity hub.
The site now sees over 700
visitors per month.
We have more than 20 groups
and artists occupying the space
– from classes on how to sew
sandwich bags, to supporting
TOP WORK: Te Kura Tawhito client service co-ordinator Sieni Afamiliona, Pregnancy Help
Canterbury manager Dahlia Xander and mother Rachel Warwick with her baby.
new mothers, growing vegetables
for the community fridge, and
weaving harakeke – the site is
abuzz with people and energy.
It’s all about people!
We receive weekly inquiries
from community organisations,
artist and many others alike, all
wanting to occupy a space.
In the last month we have
opened the art room, a space set
up specifically for people to be
able to drop in and offer their
classes.
Get in touch with co-ordinator
Sue Davidson, if you are keen.
We at Renew Brighton are
ready to expand what we can
offer at Te Kura Tawhito.
However, we’re waiting to hear
if the plans are to sell the site on
the open market, or whether we
can remain.
There is so much evidence on
how creativity positively impacts
our health and well-being and
we hope to be able to continue to
offer this for our community.
In an ideal world, we hope
to soon be sitting around a
large table talking to likely
stakeholders about the future of
the old Central New Brighton
School site – Te Kura Tawhito.
