New school spaces
bring positive response
The first stage of the rebuild at Te Huruhuru
Ao o Horomaka Hornby High is complete,
with about a quarter of the school roll settled
into the new building – and loving it.
As principal Robin Sutton explains, “The response
from the kids has been fantastic. They
love the new spaces and are responding really
positively to their new environment.”
The cleverly designed and versatile layout of
the building sees the incorporation of the
administration areas and specialist learning
spaces with creative arts at the centre, surrounded
by science, technologies and food.

There are also learning commons with a range
of spaces where students can study on their
own, have group discussions or take part in
cross-curriculum work, while hauora student
services, a bi-lingual unit and the whare, used
for relevant cultural activities, are also located
in the building.
The building is a manifestation of the school’s
vision to be a “centre of creative excellence
Te puna auaha”, Mr Sutton says, and this will
be continued in the other new buildings being
constructed over the coming months.
A new gymnasium has also been built, incorporating
a full-size basketball court, fitness room
and a classroom that is available for a range of
sports-related activities. The existing gym has
been retained and brought up to specification,
providing the school with a second, full-size
basketball court – basketball and badminton
being two of the school’s main sports, along
with a range of other codes including football
and hockey.
Demolition of other buildings is currently
underway with the contractors busy clearing
the site for stage two of the rebuild, which will
be undertaken next year. The whole project is
due for completion in 2020.
The cultural significance of the area
where Hornby High is located has been
recognised with Ngai Tahu gifting special
names for the different parts of the rebuilt
school.
In recognition of the school’s desire for
students to feel a sense of belonging to
their kahui (cluster, group, block) and for
the spaces to have an identity, Ngai Tahu
suggested using names of birds that can be
found in the Hornby area.
Names put forward were Mohua, (yellowhead),
Riroriro, (grey warbler), Tieke
(saddleback), Pipiwharauroa, (shining
cuckoo) and Korimako/Koparapara (bellbird),
and the students have initially chosen
Tieke, Mohua and Riroriro.
The various departments have also been
gifted with Maori names, all of which are
related to bird life.
