Plaque plan to honour Stanley Denton
Fire rages, homes at risk
Save Denton
Park chairman
Mark Peters
talks about
installing a
memorial
plaque at the
park
AT A recent Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
meeting, the Save Denton Park
group submitted a proposal to
recognise Stanley Denton’s gift to
the city.
It was proposed that the plaque
could read along the lines of:
“This memorial stands in honour
and appreciation of the wonderful
gift of Denton Park. Denton
Park was donated in 1952 by
the late Stanley David Denton
as a recreation reserve for the
future benefit and well-being of
the Hornby and Christchurch
residents.”
You may ask why is it necessary
to have this plaque installed at
Denton Park?
In our opinion, it is very much
needed given the recent battle
that has been waged to save Denton
Park for its intended purpose,
which was clearly stated by Stanley
Denton when gifting it. This
was reinforced by the Paparua
County Council in its Denton
Park management plan.
The fact that so much effort
needed to be put in to save the
park means we need to ensure
that we and future generations
remember the history behind its
origin. Hopefully, we never have
to go down this path of destroying
Denton Park again.
Why should this plaque be
installed as soon as possible?
The answer to this is that it
would be very poignant to involve
Mr Denton’s daughter, who
is now well over 90 years old,
in the unveiling of the plaque.
The sooner it is done the better
in order to honour her and the
Denton family for their wonderful
gift.
Where should this memorial
plaque be installed?
This is open to debate at this
stage. One thought is at the front
of Denton Park in the vicinity of
the existing sign.
Other places are along the
path adjacent to the Denton
oval grandstand, adjacent to the
Hornby rugby clubrooms, or
McDonald’s and the existing
installation?
The first step towards this
memorial plaque is to ensure
progress is made now. It has been
presented to the parks team at
the city council for approval.
Hopefully this will be forthcoming
and we can then proceed to
plan a lasting and fitting memorial
at Denton Park to recognise
and honour this gift.
There’s never been a more appropriate
time to buy a hybrid or electric vehicle.
Fuel costs are soaring, and global warming,
much of it attributed to fossil fuel emissions, is a
definite reality.
So if you want to do something for
the environment and save yourself some
cash at the weekly fill-up, then visit Trevor
Crowe, at CroweSport, 518 Moorhouse
Ave, for a lifestyle change.
The man who runs the business owns
the business, and Trevor, or any of the
friendly sales staff, can get you into an
electric vehicle or hybrid of your choice.
There are no fewer than 15 vehicles to
choose from, a mixture of fully-electric
plug-in Nissan Leafs to the hybrid petrol/
electric Prius.
Trevor says his stock consists of topgrade
models sourced from auction in
Japan. He chooses only the cars with
good battery life, and the cars on the yard
are displayed with the battery condition
visible. As with all cars on the yard at
CroweSport, the electric vehicles can be
serviced on-site by trained technicians.
Cars on-site vary in age from 2011 to
2017, and those with the latest generation
30kWh batteries can be expected to
provide a range of up to 190km. However,
petrol/electric Prius models are there for
those who experience range anxiety.
Prices for the Leafs start around $13,000
and end at around $30,000.
“The Leaf is the perfect urban commuter
– buyers who work in the city can travel to
work, swing by the supermarket on the
way home, and charge up from the home
supply overnight,’’ Trevor says.
“Charging costs can be measured
in cents, trickle charging overnight is
the kindest on the batteries although
fast charging on a journey won’t do the
batteries any harm.’’
Trevor is fully committed to the electric
revolution, and says there is a point of
difference in the models he chooses,
they are hand-picked and have workshop
backing. The first service is without cost,
as well as the first warrant of fitness.
While there is a heavy emphasis on
electric vehicles, the name CroweSport
is also synonymous with the sales of
Subaru vehicles. There are a wide range of
Subarus on-site, mostly pre-owned from
Japan.
Part of CroweSport’s success as a
business is down to Trevor’s proud
motorsport heritage. Major successes
include several New Zealand saloon
car championships, and the Asia Pacific
touring car championship, with a fourth
at Bathurst and third at the Wellington
Street Race in 1988. On shingle, Trevor
has won more than a dozen rallies, the
Ashley Forest rally sprint, and he is the
current Race to the Sky two-wheel-drive
champion. Trevor still competes, and
his race or rally cars are prepared in the
CroweSport workshop.
“Motorsport is at the cutting edge
of technology. Understanding the
complexity of tuning and setting up a
car for racing or rallying filters down to
day-to-day mechanics at workshop level,’’
Trevor says.
Trevor is an engineer and is still hand’son
in that side of the business. Engine
reconditioning is his speciality, although
he says they will take on anything from
a lube or tune-up right through to full
engine and gearbox overhauls. Nine
technicians are on site, and annually the
company takes on an apprentice, skills
developed through old-school training.
The CroweSport workshop team is highly
skilled and they will service any make or
model.
Trevor says many of his customers are
sport and recreational enthusiasts along
with those who are lifestyle and familyorientated.
And, of course, if you want a
performance enhancement, CroweSport
Subaru Specialists
has built up an enviable reputation in that
field.
Trevor’s philosophy is to get it right first
time, the company has high standards
and that reflects on the quality of the jobs
that go out the door. Although Trevor
leads from the front, he says the company
is like a family. Staff have input in the way
the company runs and operates.
“I want the customer to leave without
being presented with any surprises. We
treat the customer as if they are a family
member.
“Treat them like they are your mother,’’
he says.
Carrying the Trevor Crowe name also
means putting it right.
‘’We don’t expect things to go wrong,
but problems will be sorted out and the
customer is always told what to expect as
the process unfolds, and the cost will be
presented to the customer well before the
car is picked up.’’
For all your motoring needs or to
change your vehicle, the CroweSport
name means quality and reassurance.
“It’s about knowing how to do the right
thing by the customer,’’ Trevor says.
