Given the different views on the future of Denton Park that’s no surprise. But reporter Anan Zaki reveals today divisions within the board go back further. The conflict between members led to the intervention of city council chief executive Karleen Edwards and Mayor Lianne Dalziel. Tension still lingers given some of the snide exchanges at the board’s meeting a fortnight ago. There are some strong personalities on the community board – which is good for democracy – and long may that continue. Residents have had enough of 22 oak trees in an Upper Riccarton street. The people of Villa Grove, off Peer St, want the city council to bring down the oak trees which they say are doing more harm than good. The trees are 24 years-old and between 8.1m and 15.8m high. In a 24-signature petition to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board, the residents said because of the oak trees, party-goers set piles of leaves on fire, the leaves block gutters and many houses don’t get sunlight in the summer. The trees are on both sides of the street, on public land. But city council staff want them kept because they are in healthy condition, cause no safety concerns and add amenity to the area. Villa Grove is a 37-dwelling subdivision completed in 1994. Shortly after completion of the homes, 26 oak trees were planted on each side of the street. Four of the oak trees are on private property. A spokesperson for Villa Grove residents declined to comment until after the board’s decision. Residents will also have to pay maintenance costs of $6600 if the board votes to remove them. They will also have to pay for resource consent application. In a letter to the residents, city council staff said there is currently no budget to remove and replant healthy trees. Mike Mora said it was normal practice for the city council to charge people who want to remove healthy trees. Mr Mora did not want to make further comment until after the board’s decision. The petition to the board from the residents says that the majority of the people living at Villa Grove are retired. It is due to be completed by Labour weekend. $500 GRANT FOR STUDENT Burnside High School student Tahlia Conrad-Hinga, 17, is a step closer to travelling to New York for the United Nations’ Youth New Zealand Global Development Tour in January. Tahlia received a $500 grant from the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board last week. She is one of 22 representatives from New Zealand. YOUNG GYMNASTS Four gymnasts have been granted $200 each to travel to the New Zealand Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. Yaldhurst gymnast Emily Sidaway, 15, will next week represent Canterbury in the tournament, which is being held in Tauranga next week. She will join Burnside siblings Luke, Cole and Sian Stevens, who will also represent Canterbury.
