14 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 3 October, 2018 First families climb the Morrison Bay sea wall THE NEW seawall at Morrison Bay Park in Putney was recently opened by City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale and Clr Roy Maggio. The sandstone eawall took 11 onths to build and as designed to enance the heritage nd natural characer of the Morrison ay foreshore. In addition to the eawall, council ork at Morrison ay Park includes n upgrade of the xisting sharedath for pedestrians nd cyclists as well s the installation of cenic viewing and ew seating areas long the path. Saltmarsh grasss have also been lanted and there ave been improveents to the stormwater drainage system, recently advocated by The Weekly Times and former councillor Vic Tagg. The new seawall at Morrison Bay Park follows the upgrade of the Meadowbank Park seawall in 2016 and the next stage of the foreshore upgrade project will see improvements to the seawall at Banjo Patterson Park in Gladesville. Mayor Laxale said the new seawall at Morrison Bay Park served a practical purpose while also being a welcome aesthetic addition to the area. “We call this new seawall Ryde’s Barangaroo,” he said. “It’s been a promise of mine to increase funding towards open space, passive recreation and place making. “This facility at Morrison Bay will benefit young and old for generations and is a sign of things to come.” Councillor Maggio said Morrison Bay Park is also set to receive further upgrades throughout this 2018/19 financial year. Ryde Eastwood District Music Club owes its existence to the energy and enthusiasm of the late Mrs FC Taylor, wife of the then Town Clerk of Ryde. In 1943 Mrs Taylor and her husband began a move to form a district music club along the lines of the Federated Music Clubs then operating in a number of Sydney suburbs. At a meeting held on Monday August 16, 1943 in the Soldiers Memorial Hall, Eastwood, 88 people signed applications to join the “Ryde Eastwood District Music Club” which would affiliate with the Federated Music Clubs of Australia. The Clubs purpose was then stated to be “to provide music of a high standard for the entertainment and musical education of members and friends, in an atmosphere of friendly and social exchange”. Many famous artists have performed for the Club over the past 75 years including Joan Sutherland in both 1947 and 1949, Richard Bonynge, Roger Woodward and Simon Tedeschi. Invictus Games experience for Ryde students STUDENTS from the Ryde area will attend the upcoming Invictus Games in Sydney, enjoying the benefits of workshops on adaptive sports and inspirational insights from competitors. The excursion will complement school curriculum materials created for public school students which will explore the central themes of inclusion, resilience, service and the healing power of sport. Ryde MP Victor Dominello said the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will highlight the ability of wounded, injured and ill defence personnel and veterans. “This is the educational opportunity of a lifetime for Ryde students,” Mr Dominello said. “Local students will now have the opportunity to cheer on Invictus athletes and gain a deeper understanding of the healing power of sport.” Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott said almost 200 public schools have signed up for the unique experience, ensuring that communities from across the state are sharing in the Invictus spirit. “One of the most exciting things for a student is when the classroom comes to life and that’s exactly what they will see when competitors from 18 nations compete in sports such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair rugby and indoor rowing,” Mr Elliott said. Has Gladesville’s Monash Park gone to the dogs? THE GLADESVILLE community will be consulted on whether or not Monash Park should become an off-leash dog walking area. The consultation will be included in a wider City of Ryde Dog Recreation Strategy study into off-leash dog walking parks after a motion was introduced by Clr Roy Maggio at last Tuesday night’s council meeting in support of the Monash Park idea. Sporting teams who use Monash and other parks will have a say as part of the Strategy study. Local dog owners spoke in support of Clr Maggio’s Tuesday night motion. “There are around 15,000 dog owners in Ryde but if we walk them on the street it is not as good as if you run them in a park,” local dog owner Guy Williamson said. “Yet we’ve had council rangers throwing us out of the park and threatening us with fines. “All the money you (councillors) are spending on parks just can’t be for sporting people.” Kylee Blackwell agreed. “Monash Park is the ideal choice for an off leash area and at Monash Park we even clean up the litter left by the sporting teams.” For Jim Dolan, an off leash Monash Park offers a better opportunity to socialise. “I’ve got dogs and I’ve met at least 100 dogs and their owners here, we’ve even had Christmas get togethers,” he said. “So this is a fantastic opportunity to socialise our dogs, although clearly, the dogs go when soccer is being played at the park.” The Strategy will also investigate the feasibility of council operated “doggie litter bag” vending machines, although the bags will need to be made from corn starch or another biodegradable material to comply with the Council’s recent ban on single use plastics in council parks and at council events. In other dog related news, City of Ryde councillors voted unanimously to host a Sydney PAWS festival dog themed stalls and in Ryde.
