ONE of Denistone’s famous heritage homes has been
saved from demolition through a last minute City of Ryde
interim heritage order.

threat of being bulldozed
to make way
for proposed duplex
and triplex homes but
the council responded
with an urgent Mayoral
Minute at last Tuesday
night’s council meeting
in response to local
residents pleas.
“If this old and elegant
resident is heritage
listed it will join
only seven other (local)
heritage listed buildings,”
Denistone resident
John Court said.
“The proposed development
would be
out of character and
inconsistant with with
our policy to wind back
over development.”
Resident Patricia
Lloyd agreed.
“I have known this
beautiful property all
my life and it is the
most elegant property
in the area, a dominant
local landmark and the
last stately home in the
vicinity.”
Next door neighbour
Ronald McKeown
warned of alleged dangers
if the proposed
development is approved.
“It would prove to
be very dangerous to
the little children from
the St Therese school,
who would have to
contend with (extra
cars) at an already
dangerous crossing”
The City of Ryde’s
Heritage Office described
the houseas
one of the more
prominent dwellings
in the streetscape and
strongly recommended
heritage protection.
Although the interim
heritage order is not
a guarantee the home
will be saved in does
provide temporary protection
and gives the
Council with the time
to further assess the
heritage significance
of a potential item.

While demolition of
the Denistone house is
not proposed as part
of a current development
application, the
application is accompanied
by an indicative
site plan which shows
the applicant’s intention
to demolish the
current dwelling and
redevelop on the site
with the construction
of a duplex and triplex.
With the interim
heritage order now
placed on the Denistone
house, Council
will prepare a planning
proposal to permanently
list the house as
an item of local heritage
significance and
forward it to the Department
of Planning
and Environment with
a request for a gateway
determination.
Once gateway determination
is received,
the planning proposal
will be made available
for community consultation,
with the outcomes
of that community
consultation to be
presented to Council.
