4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 3 October, 2018 Dear Sir, Theresa Collignon was appointed CEO of Macquarie Community College in February 2015. At her first AGM in May that year College members were to witness unprecedented affluence with the flashy Annual Report adorned with three A4 Studio photos of herself, Chairman Sue Murray and past CEO June Heinrich. As a portent of things to come, that same evening three of her friends were introduced, all appointed to the Board just a few days before the AGM. These business “experts” we were assured, would lift the College’s commercial standing to new highs. Instead, pretending they were all directors of some multinational business, these dreamers encouraged reckless spending against the strongest advice of those experienced Letters to the Editor Time for change at once great Macquarie Community College directors in a minority. At the AGM in 2016 the college declared a loss of over $567,000 the biggest loss in the College’s history, denying it any hope of proposing credible tenders for years to come. Peter Glasheen, the most vocal of the experts assured members that the biggest loss in the college’s history was “cash positive”. Predictably in 2016 Macquarie Community College failed to retain the $25 million AMEP tender it had proudly held for 19 years and the SEE tender for $1.8 million which it had held for 3 years. Also, the Lifestyle and Leisure program for which the college was famous was allowed to shrink to unimaginable lows. It should be noted that the College, which over fifteen years to 2009 donated over $1.5 million to charities and local sponsorships and spent less than Theresa Collignon in the lavish 2005 Annual Report. Lisa Miscamble GENERAL MANAGER $2,000 on average annually on legal expenses was able to reverse its strategy, spending an average of almost $100,000 each year on legal expenses and donating almost nothing each year on sponsorships and charities. At the College AGM in May this year chairman Peter Glasheen proudly announced the college had made a surplus of $175,000 last year, only to have the CFO then advise that by March 2018 the college was in deficit $250,000 with an expected loss for the 2018 of $400,000 - an appalling six significant losses in seven years! Recently the College relinquished its lease on Brush Farm House, confirming that the ‘Reception Business’ started with great fanfare several years ago was a flop and had to close. The Carlingford Campus comprising two 1880’s buildings restored and maintained for years with pride is now wilfully neglected and well on the way to the derelict state it was over 20 years ago. Our big spending CEO now boasts desperate cost cutting measures. Members were advised recently of “more than $1million reduction in overheads”. Hardly impressive Theresa, when the gross turnover over the past two years has gone down over $5million! It would seem the obvious way to cut costs and restore credibility to the College would be to remove the CEO and her friends on the Board who created this appalling state of affairs and find some suitable people with commercial acumen and a passion for Adult Education to replace them. Astounding that he has missed the name offormer mayor Jane Waddell (1995-96) as the leading figure who led the fight against John Howard’s government to get the ‘aircraft noise’ partially away from the Suburb. She won the Hunters Hill Council election on the “no aircraft noise” party ticket. Today, we enjoy somewhatthis “noise free” status because ofthesupport of the civic minded local residents. Only a few would remember us ‘blocking’access to the domestic airport on a Saturday Morning together with other participating councils. The noise is not yet over because we depend much on wind conditions. Can’t wait till Badgerys creek airport opens. Dear Sir, Whatever “gotcha” point Tony Ikonomou thinks he’s scored in reference to the number of Chinese people living in Vancouver, he can have it. My issue isn’t with him, or a Canadian city thousands of km away. It’s why this local newspaper, one which services a proudly ethnically diverse community in an exciting part of Sydney, devotes so much of its letters column to racebaiting. When I raised this a few weeks ago, the editor explained it’s a matter of “free speech” and a “fair go for all.” Excellent sentiments, I don’t doubt they’re sincere, I wholeheartedly agree, and congratulate TWT for its operatingprinciples. But how about a fair go for those who find racism offensive? Do we really need to read about one man’s “yellow peril” fears every second week in TWT? In other words, give it a rest! Recognising that some of its readers could get obsessive and had too much time on their hands (guilty, m’Lord), theSydney Morning Heraldused to have a policy of not publishing letters from the same person on the same topic for a specified period. With one eye on its revenue base, it also exercised editorial discretion, or at least that was the case back when I was involved in the business of journalism. And it is a business. Barbara E Pye Hunters Hill NOW IN SIX LANGUAGES! www.weeklytimes.com.au Hunters Hill Guest Column Sharing childhood memories and family stories of precious dolls WE STARTED VSandO (Very Special and Original) Doll Rescue as an idea to bring precious things from the past into the present, and give them a life into the future. Our first project was to rewrite vintage knitting patterns, which we thought were too beautiful to be allowed to fade into history. The patterns also represented two of the key pillars of our philosophy – the making of hand-crafted items and the use of traditional skills that were handed down through generations. At our home in Hunters Hill we began with ‘popup shops’ in the yard and in the lounge room. At our first sale we dressed some secondhand dolls in hand-knitted clothes to showcase what could be done with knitting. The dolls were very popular so we dressed some more. We wondered if it would be possible to rescue dolls, do them up and sell them on so that they could have another life. If people were interested in such a thing then we could express the third pillar of our philosophy – recycling, reclaiming and reusing discarded items. * * * WE WERE really encouraged when we had a stall at the first Hunters Hill Street Feast. To The POINT with YVONNE BATTERHAM The response to our dolls was so positive and overwhelming and we enjoyed doing them so much, that rescuing dolls has become our biggest project. Our dolls are mostly rescued from charity shops. We buy the ones that no-one else will buy because they are in such poor condition and bring home the scruffy, the dirty, the tangled and the broken. We clean them, fix them and dress them so that they are ready to be reloved. Even the unfixable are used with recycled bits and pieces and made into new things. * * * IN THE course of our doll rescuing we have learned many new skills, to add to those that had been passed down to us. At our stalls we are often asked if we repair dolls. So now we do. Our doll rescuing project has been extended again. We love this work because we can use our skills creatively to give things another life that would otherwise be thrown away and love the challenge of solving new problems and generating new ideas. But most of all we love the joy that we share with the people we meet. Whenever we have a stall we receive smiles and joyful responses. People tell us tales of their own dolls. They share their childhood memories and family stories, as well as their hopes for the future of their precious dolls. People tell us about their own creative skills and sometimes share things with us that they can no longer use. Rescuing and recycling is also highly valued by our customers. We become a community and strangers become friends. There are just the two of us at VSandO. We’re a mother and daughter team - Yvonne and Cheryl. We are inspired by the past to continue to make beautiful things for the future. Our next stall will be held on Friday November 30 at Gladesville Shopping Village. Please come and say hello. Council to consult with community on draft Sydney Airport Masterplan I AM pleased to advise that at Hunters Hill Council’s meeting on Monday October 24, Councillor Ben Collins was elected Deputy Mayor. I wish to thank Councillor Ross Williams for his support and contribution over the past 12 months in the Deputy Mayor role and look forward to working with Councillor Collins as Deputy Mayor. * * * THE DRAFT Sydney Airport Master Plan is currently on public exhibition. This draft Master Plan includes a new Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) for the areas around the airport affected by air traffic noise and the draft ANEF 2039 shows an extension to the 20-contour line as compared to the ANEF 2033. Sydney Airport Corporation is seeking submission up until November 20. Submissions should be addressed to Master Plan 2039 Submission, Sydney Airport Corporation Limited, Locked Bag 5000, Sydney International Airport, NSW 2020.
