CALD Seniors learning<br />

about Elder Abuse and DV<br />

Ryde Police Area Command recognises there is a lack<br />

of understanding of the laws and the processes in relation<br />

to domestic violence (DV) against elderly persons from the<br />

CALD community. Hence, on Tuesday September 25 the<br />

Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club (ECSCC) was invited<br />

to participate in a community education program on<br />

elder abuse and DV at the Burwood Local Court.<br />

This event was supported by the Ryde City Council and<br />

the Northern Centre. It is aimed at raising awareness of the<br />

processes in reporting incidents to the police, the Local<br />

Court and support services such as Legal Aid, Victim Support<br />

Services, DV Court Advocacy Services etc.<br />

27th Birthday Celebration. We have a fantastic programme<br />

MAYOR’S COMMUNITY MESSAGE<br />

Granny Smith Festival just around the corner<br />

Preparations are really ramping up for this year’s Granny Smith<br />

Festival which will be held in Eastwood on Saturday 20 <strong>October</strong>.<br />

Last week, apple trees were donated to five local schools to<br />

mark the 150th anniversary of the Granny Smith apple.<br />

In addition, visits were also made to other schools as part<br />

of the annual Granny Smith Schools Program. <strong>The</strong> program<br />

allows young students to take part in fun games such as<br />

apple bobbing as well as learn about the history of<br />

Granny Smith and her famous creation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se school visits serve an important<br />

role to involve kids in the celebrations<br />

of the Festival and teach them about an<br />

important piece of community history.<br />

I really hope everyone in the community<br />

can get to Eastwood on 20 <strong>October</strong> for<br />

the Granny Smith Festival and enjoy<br />

the fantastic entertainment that will<br />

be featured throughout the day. More<br />

Preserving Ryde’s heritage<br />

Council has once again taken measures<br />

to save Ryde’s important heritage by<br />

unanimously supporting my Mayoral<br />

Minute to place an interim heritage order<br />

on a house in Denistone, which was under<br />

threat of demolition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> beautiful house in Denistone is a<br />

pristine example of the fantastic homes<br />

we have in the City of Ryde, and as a<br />

Council we will do all we can to ensure it<br />

remains in its current form for generations<br />

to come. This is the third interim heritage<br />

order Council has placed on a house since<br />

I became Mayor and we will continue to<br />

take such action during my tenure to stop<br />

bulldozers from destroying Ryde’s history.<br />

I would like to say a big thank you to the<br />

long-standing residents who addressed<br />

Council about this issue and have put in<br />

a lot of effort in a short amount of time to<br />

save the Denistone house.<br />

Stacks of fun to be had at our<br />

libraries these school holidays<br />

With the school holidays in full swing, a<br />

reminder that our <strong>October</strong> Library School<br />

Holiday Program has plenty of great<br />

activities to keep the kids entertained.<br />

Activities taking place include a Taronga<br />

Zoomobile, fun workshops decorating<br />

pots and planting vegetable seeds to see<br />

how they grow as well as PJ storytimes.<br />

City of Ryde library branch.<br />

Dig deep for drought<br />

A reminder about the City of Ryde’s<br />

fundraising campaign to help<br />

drought-affected farmers. All proceeds<br />

raised go to the ‘Buy A Bale’ initiative<br />

which delivers hay and other essential<br />

items to farmers who have no feed left for<br />

their livestock.<br />

Donations can be made at collection<br />

buckets found at Council’s Customer<br />

Service Centre, libraries and the Ryde<br />

Aquatic Leisure Centre. Online donations<br />
