Car 553 is the only operating membership commuter car on the rails in the United States. Unlike other Metra cars, this vintage passenger version features dozens of comfortable arm chairs that face each other to promote conversation, especially on the evening trip home. Memorabilia — framed photos of old steam engines, magazine covers, lists of original members — grace the walls. Tables are available in the back for members to place their laptops upon to get work done. “It’s a great way to be productive in a pleasant environment, and you get to talk with a number of interesting people,” said Devon Bruce, who volunteers as the head of the car. “It’s really a game-changer for a lot of us.” In 2017, a $100,000 refurbishment brought a new refrigerator and the original green-and-yellow Chicago and Northwestern colors to the exterior that set it apart from all of the other silver-dominant Metra cars. Since Metra announcements of impending stations cannot be Making stops in Winnetka, Car 553 is the only operating membership commuter car on the rails in the United States. Photo Submitted heard on the private car, members can enjoy uninterrupted conversations and a drink on the way home — but they need to check their watches or iPhones, lest they end up in Kenosha. Car 553 arrives into Ogilvie Station at 8:02 a.m. and then leaves Ogilvie at 5:35 p.m. It stops both going into and out of Chicago at most North Shore towns, including Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Fort Sheridan, Highland Park, Glencoe and Winnetka. It is the last car on the way into the city and the first one on the way out. Members stroll aboard; there is never a crowd waiting for the doors to open. From stops such as Lake Forest, the price is $750 per quarter. From Winnetka and nearby stops, the price is $450 a quarter. The charge also covers any use by family members and friends, which can come in handy for members whose children procure summer internships downtown. Members must also purchase a Metra ticket and are required to show it on the private car. Though the majority of members are male, females are more than welcome. When a non-member strolls in, unclear that it’s a private car, he or she is told that it is and welcomed to continue the ride there. Car 553 appeared on the rails in the late 1940s and succeeded the Deerpath, whose original members include Fields, Swifts and other titans of Chicago industry who lived in Lake Forest. It once featured a barber chair, and bridge games among members were frequent in past decades.
