Let pumpkin spice season commence
Megan Bernard
megan@glencoeanchor.com
Well, well, well.
Here we are —
the first issue of
October. That means it is
officially fall!
I hope you’ve been
enjoying the recent cool
weather and the change
in the color of leaves in
Winnetka and Northfield.
I know I have been.
I have to admit: I am
the type of person who
always looks forward to
this particular change in
seasons. I love the break
in hot and humid weather,
trips to the apple orchard
and pumpkin patch,
Halloween decorations,
and the start of everything
pumpkin-flavored
and scented. (If I could
sprinkle pumpkin spice
on everything, I probably
would. No shame in that.)
Fall community events
are also something I love
to get out to during this
time. I thought I’d round
up some local happenings
this month so you can also
get into the spirit:
Pumpkins in the
Woods — Hubbard Woods
Park will be transformed
into a pumpkin patch for
the family to enjoy before
Halloween from 4-6 p.m.
Oct. 19. The event will include
pumpkin decorating,
carnival games, bounce
houses, a DJ, costume
contest and more. Costume
contest registration will
begin at 4:30 p.m. and
winners will be announced
around 5:30 p.m.
Haunted Trail of Winnetka
— The ghosts and
gouls that have haunted
Lloyd Beach have risen
again to strike fear into
our hearts for the seventh
annual Haunted Trail of
Winnetka from 6-9 p.m.
Oct. 20 at Lloyd Beach.
Try to not get trapped inside
Davey Jones’ Locker
as you and your friends attempt
to escape the terrors
on the beach and inside
the boat house.
History on the Hill
— Join the Winnetka
Historical Society for a
tour of the serene Christ
Church churchyard, which
has served as a burial
ground in Winnetka for
200 years from 2-4 p.m.
Oct. 21 at Christ Church,
784 Sheridan Road, Winnetka.
Learn about the
earliest Winnetka families
for whom the churchyard
is a final resting place.
Pumpkin Carving
— Come on over to the
Winnetka Park District to
carve pumpkins with your
child and enjoy all of the
fun without the cleanup
from 5-6 p.m. Oct. 24.
While you are creating
your masterpiece, staff
will serve you hot cider
and freshly bakes cookies
to snack on — yum!
Halloween Spooktacular
— There’s fun
for the whole family with
Dave Rudolf’s Halloween
Spooktacular at 1-2:30
p.m. Oct. 26 at the Winnetka
Community House,
620 Lincoln Ave. He
will entertain goblins of
all ages with his ghostdefinitely,
not very scary
definitely — fun songs
and stories to raise the
hair on your funny bone.
Kids come dressed in costume
and share the stage
with Dave.
Room Escape — Navigate
through the haunted
youth department by
solving a series of spooky
puzzles from 6-9 p.m.
Oct. 29 at the Winnetka
Library. Those who are
brave enough to finish
the challenge will earn a
sweet treat. Registration
required. For children
ages 9 and up.
Aside from these events
(more on Page 2), if you
know of a house that goes
the extreme with decorations
or a local haunted
place, give me a shout at
a jagged mouth, for a scary
pumpkin. Over the years,
carvers have gone outside
the box, or pumpkin in this
case, to make increasingly
artistic jack-o’lanterns.
With that sentiment, The
Winnetka Current is kicking
off its annual Great
Pumpkin Contest. The
Current is calling for your
best and most creative autumn
art sculpted into your
jack-o’-lanterns.
There is no limit to what
your pumpkin can be. The
only restriction is that the
carver of the pumpkin
must reside in Winnetka
and Northfield and the
pumpkin must be decorated
this year.
To accommodate those
who save pumpkin-carving
festivities for All Hallow’s
Eve, the deadline for
the photos is noon Friday,
Nov. 2. You have another
four weeks to buy your
pumpkin, come up with
your creatively creepy
composition, take a picture
and send it in to The
Current.
Include your first and
last name, as well as a
phone number and address.
The winner will
receive a spooky surprise
from a local retailer and
the creation will be printed
in the Thursday, Nov. 8 issue
of The Current.
