While temperatures fall
this time of year and we
warm up with sweet and
savory comfort foods,
Meg’s Cafe is here to provide
healthy, hearty options.
The downtown Glencoe
establishment rolled out
its new dinner menu on
Sept. 25 at 317 Park Ave.
The menu boasts some
of the cafe’s staples plus
four new plates, including
butternut squash lasagna,
lemon garlic zoodles, Parmesan
pesto and baked ratatouille.
Owner Barbara Lepman
said she got the menu inspiration
from something
simple — eating out with
her daughter, Meg, whom
the restaurant is named after.
“We have a lot of glutenfree
customers so I wanted
to do that and pick something
light,” Lepman said
of the menu.
Lepman worked with her
kitchen staff for months to
create and perfect the new
dishes, she added.
“Everything is made
[in-house], except for
our bread, and we use the
healthiest ingredients that
we can,” Lepman said.
22nd Century Media
editors tried out some of
the new dishes for ourselves
last week. Each dish
comes with a salad with a
choice of house or Caesar
dressing.
The butternut squash
lasagna ($19) became a
quick favorite in our newsroom.
It was baked perfectly
with the squash inbetween
the several layers
of soft pasta.
Lemon garlic zoodles
The Parmesan pesto ($17), a colorful entree, based
with rigatoni and topped with sauteed asparagus and
sun-dried tomatoes, is a new item on the menu at Meg’s
Cafe. Michael Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
($15) — noodles made
from zucchini — were
paired with sauteed red
peppers, spinach and cherry
tomatoes. This glutenfree
dish was a healthy,
shameless spin on a heavy
plate of pasta, which can
rack up carbohydrates.
The Parmesan pesto
($17), a colorful entree,
was based with rigatoni
and topped with sauteed
asparagus and sun-dried
tomatoes.
Lastly, the baked ratatouille
($14) was a packedfull
dish with red peppers,
onions, eggplant, zucchini,
mushrooms and mozzarella
cheese.
All of the healthy dishes
disappeared quickly between
our staff, so it’s no
wonder why this menu
would be popular in a time
when heavy comfort food
is tempting.
Also, on the dinner
menu are: small bites, tacos,
burgers, seafood entrees
and salads.
Throughout the next
several weeks, Lepman
said the new dishes will
also be tweaked from customers’
feedback.
Lepman tries to put out
a new dinner menu every
year since every season
would be too overwhelming,
she added. These new
dishes are available through
Apple A Day Catering, as
well, which Meg’s Cafe
also owns and operates.
Apple A Day Catering
began 34 years ago. At that
time, the cafe was small
and only carry-out. When
the business moved to its
current location, they expanded
the cafe operation
into what it is now.
Reservations are recommended
for dinner,
which runs from 4-8 p.m.
Tuesday-Saturday. There
are also several tables that
accommodate walk-in customers.
