Trevians celebrate homecoming with rivalry win
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
Ask Brian Doll about
senior wide receiver/defensive
back Carson Kosanovich
and the New Trier coach
will tell you: “he makes big
plays in key situations.”
“One game I’m talking
about how great he is offensively;
next game I’m
talking about how great he
is defensively,” Doll continued.
“Tonight he got the momentum
going in our favor
and that got us some confidence.
That set the tone for
the game.”
Doll’s words came in the
aftermath of the Trevians’
hard-earned 35-28 homecoming
victory over an
Evanston team that didn’t
know when to quit.
“That’s the best Evanston
team I’ve seen in a long
time,” Doll said. “They
have weapons everywhere
and a 350-pounder (Quentin
Ivory) on the right side
of their line.”
“They never gave up,”
said wide receiver/defensive
back Sean McNeeley.
“We just perservered.”
records, while New Trier
was 1-0 in conference play
after a win over Niles West
last week, but Evanston 0-1
after a loss to Maine South.
Kosanovich’s big plays
were three in number and
they all came on defense in
the first quarter.
He opened the scoring
with an interception runback
from about 20 yards
out on a third-and-12 situation
at the Wildkits’ 9-yard
line. He picked off a pass
when Evanston tried for a
two-point conversion after
scoring its first TD with 52
seconds to play in the quarter.
And his interception at
the Evanston 32 on the last
play of the quarter instigated
the Trevians’ drive for
their third touchdown.
The most conspicuous
contributors on offense
were quarterback Carson
Ochsenhirt and running
backs Brian Sitzer and
Donovan Perkins, both of
whom had spent time on
the injured list during the
first half of the season.
“Ochsenhirt is an exciting
quarterback to watch,”
Doll said. “This was a rivalry
game and he stepped
up big. Playing lacrosse has
helped him a lot.
“Brian got hurt in the first
quarter of the Loyola game
and didn’t come back until
he played about a quarter
last week. Tonight we were
Carson Kosanovich makes the interception and runs it back for a New Trier
touchdown to go ahead 7-0 Friday, Sept. 28, in Northfield. Scott Margolin/22nd
Century Media
leaning on him a lot, as a
ballcarrier and on defense,
and he looked great.
“Donovan has come
back from an ankle injury.
It’s healed now and we
were able to use him on offense
a little bit more. He
was one of the guys we
were able to use both ways
effectively in ways that we
hadn’t before tonight. On
his touchdown there was a
fast kid chasing him but the
kid couldn’t catch him.”
Ochsenhirt connected
with Sitzer on a 72-yard
touchdown pass play in the
first quarter and scored on
a 9-yard run in the second
quarter.
“Initially, I was looking
to the other side,” Ochsenhirt
said of the pass that
Sitzer pulled down along
the left sideline and kept
going before slanting to the
middle of the field to break
tackles en route to the end
zone.
“Brian popped open and
I just threw it.”
In the fourth quarter, Perkins
broke away for a 52-
yard scoring run and Sitzer
took the ball to the end
zone from 14 yards out for
the touchdown that came
after the Wildkits cut their
deficit to 28-20 with 8:31
remaining.
Prefacing Sitzer’s TD
was a trick play in a third
down and long yardage
situation from the Evanston
41—a tackle eligible
reception by Duke Olges of
Ochsenhirt’s pass that put
the ball on the 14.
Undaunted by the
derring-do of Olges and
Sitzer, Evanston made another
comeback. Gerrard
Lamour returned the kickoff
to the New Trier 47 to
begin a touchdown drive
