WRITER’S TIP: My first racing
experience was in Nelson. Upon
asking my boyfriend how people
would be dressed, he answered
‘posh’. Needless to say that when I
arrived donning heels and a beautiful
dress, everyone was, in fact, sporting
sneakers and singlets. The moral of
the story? Do your homework and
always ask more than one person.
THE HEADWEAR
Getting your head around race-day headwear is no
easy feat.
If you’re not a fascinator kind of girl, you’re not
alone. Luckily, many great brands are jumping on
the bandwagon by offering ranges of headbands and
headscarves as an alternative. Dolce and Gabbana

for race-goers who don’t cheer on fascinators,

DO allow plenty of time if you’re opting for a custommade
headpiece, and make sure you can give your
milliner as much information as possible about the
outfit that you’ll be wearing, in advance.
DON’T even think about wearing cat ears. Last year
saw a huge rise in this particular style, and we’re not
happy about it. Horses are the only important animals
on the day, after all.
