Mayor Andrew Ginther will join residents and city employees in
taking steps, literally, to fight heart disease.
Ginther hosted the city’s first “Move with the Mayor
Challenge,” a month-long series of walks to save lives by getting
people on the path to healthier hearts. His Westside walk will be
held at 5 p.m. Sept. 25 at Georgian Heights Elementary, 784
Georgian Dr.
The campaign, a partnership between the city of Columbus,
Columbus Public Health, The Ohio State University and the
National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, encourages
residents to walk with the mayor for
30 minutes.
“Many Columbus residents suffer from
heart disease,” said Ginther. “We want all
of our neighbors to be with us for a long time, and walking is one
of the easiest ways to fight heart disease and prevent strokes.”
According to Bernadette Melnyk, Ohio State University chief
wellness officer and vice president of health promotion, 80 percent
of cardiovascular disease can be prevented with healthy lifestyle
behaviors, such as being physically active for 150 minutes per
week.
“Even if you do not meet the 150 minutes per week evidencebased
recommendation, findings from research support that even
brief bouts of moving or physical activity can be beneficial for your
heart. The bottom line is move more and sit less,” said Melnyk.
on fire prevention tips.”
This year, the theme of the event will be look, listen
and learn. Some of the activities this year will include
arts and crafts, on-site food trucks, different education
stations, booths by community partners, tours of the
fire trucks and station and an opportunity for kids to
try out the fire house and learn what to do if there is a
fire.
Currently, four food trucks are confirmed for the
event, but officials are not giving further details.
“We will be announcing that on social media leading
up to the event,” Donofrio said. “I can say we will
have a variety of different foods on hand.”
Prairie Township Fire Chief Chris Snyder said this
event is a great opportunity to have the fire department
build relationships with the community.
“We always encourage firefighters to be a part of
the community and give back,” Snyder said. “We took
a great idea by one of our firefighters and just built
onto it.”
Snyder said last year the event was a big success
and this year they expect just as many attendees.
“This also is a great opportunity for parents to
spend time with their kids,” Snyder said. “We know in
today’s times that this bonding time is very important.
We are excited we can offer this experience for families.”
