take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at
Station 241, 123 Inah Ave.
“This event came from an idea our
Firefighter Evan Strauss had to celebrate
fire prevention week,” said David
Donofrio, Prairie Township Fire
Department administrative assistant. “We
wanted to kick this week off with some fun
for the residents and to educate everyone
Mayor Andrew Ginther will join residents and city employees in
taking steps, literally, to fight heart disease.
Ginther hosted the city’s first “Move with the Mayor
Challenge,” a month-long series of walks to save lives by getting
people on the path to healthier hearts. His Westside walk will be
held at 5 p.m. Sept. 25 at Georgian Heights Elementary, 784
Georgian Dr.
The campaign, a partnership between the city of Columbus,
Columbus Public Health, The Ohio State University and the
National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, encourages
residents to walk with the mayor for
30 minutes.
“Many Columbus residents suffer from
heart disease,” said Ginther. “We want all
of our neighbors to be with us for a long time, and walking is one
of the easiest ways to fight heart disease and prevent strokes.”
According to Bernadette Melnyk, Ohio State University chief
wellness officer and vice president of health promotion, 80 percent
of cardiovascular disease can be prevented with healthy lifestyle
behaviors, such as being physically active for 150 minutes per
week.
“Even if you do not meet the 150 minutes per week evidencebased
recommendation, findings from research support that even
brief bouts of moving or physical activity can be beneficial for your
heart. The bottom line is move more and sit less,” said Melnyk.
on fire prevention tips.”
This year, the theme of the event will be look, listen
and learn. Some of the activities this year will include
arts and crafts, on-site food trucks, different education
stations, booths by community partners, tours of the
fire trucks and station and an opportunity for kids to
try out the fire house and learn what to do if there is a
fire.
Currently, four food trucks are confirmed for the
event, but officials are not giving further details.
“We will be announcing that on social media leading
up to the event,” Donofrio said. “I can say we will
have a variety of different foods on hand.”
Prairie Township Fire Chief Chris Snyder said this
event is a great opportunity to have the fire department
build relationships with the community.
“We always encourage firefighters to be a part of
the community and give back,” Snyder said. “We took
a great idea by one of our firefighters and just built
onto it.”
Snyder said last year the event was a big success
and this year they expect just as many attendees.
“This also is a great opportunity for parents to
spend time with their kids,” Snyder said. “We know in
today’s times that this bonding time is very important.
We are excited we can offer this experience for families.”
Halloween events in Prairie Twp.
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
The Prairie Township Community Center is celebrating
the season with fall events for the community.
The center will host the third annual Pumpkin
Swim. Taking place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21, the
event is for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years
old. During the event, children can swim in the center’s
pool and pick their own floating pumpkins.
Afterward they can decorate their pumpkins with arts
and crafts items before taking them home.
“Something new we are hoping to do this year is
have a water balloon sling shot,” said James Gant,
director of the community center. “However, we are
still trying to workout the logistics of this and make it
safe for everyone.”
Other fall themed activities taking place at the community
center include the annual Trick-or-Treat Trial.
During this event, kids can dress up and go booth-tobooth
in the gym and get treats from local businesses.
This event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26.
The community center also has a variety of new
programming coming up to attract more members.
Among these activities is programs for preschoolers,
“We started a preschool open gym that will take
place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays,” Gant said.
“The cost is $2 per child and they can play in our gym
and work off some energy. During the fall and winter
kids are cooped up inside, so we thought this would be
a great opportunity to let them burn off some energy.”
The center also will be offering a new home school
recreation class for kids who attend homeschool and
want to play with other homeschool kids.
Gant said the reason they decided to create this
class is because the westside has a large number of
homeschool students, so they thought this was an
opportunity to let children interact.
“We also are offering new classes like ballet and a
strength and conditioning program,” Gant said. “For
ballet, we thought it was great to let kids try out a few
classes and see if they like it. For the strength and conditioning
program, we are working with middle school
and high school athletes on training to meet their
goals.”
Franklin Township is celebrating the
future opening of the new county morgue.
At a recent meeting, the board discussed
how excited they are for the opening of this
facility.
The groundbreaking for the new
Forensic Science Center took place in early
September and construction will be complete
in 2020, according to Kris Long,
Franklin County Board of Commissioners
deputy county administrator.
Located at 2090 Frank Road, the new
center will be located on 10 acres and will
cost approximately $37 million.
“This is a great new development on
Frank Road and it is phenomenal to have
this on the Westside,” said Aryeh Alex,
township trustee. “This could result in further
business in the area as well because
the employees here will need places to eat.
This can only benefit the entire region.”
The Forensic Science Center will be
about 57,000 square feet and will include
open green space, an education center, conference
spaces, investigation suites, a
research lab and the morgue.
The county coroner’s office investigates
all unattended deaths in Franklin County,
as well as those caused by violence, criminal
means and suicide. Each year, the
office investigates roughly 4,000 deaths
and performs about 1,500 autopsies.
“Our new Forensic Science Center will
enable the coroner’s office to provide better,
more streamlined and more community oriented
services to our
residents,” said
benefit greatly from the Forensic Science
Center.”
In other township news, the trustees
discussed their plans to partner with a
local high school to support the professional
development of students. Among these
initiatives includes giving students at
Franklin Heights High School the opportunity
to create a new logo for the township.
“The tagline will be Franklin Township,
past, present, future,” said John Fleshman,
township trustee. “We are thinking we will
put a group of students together and they
will come up with four logos. They then can
present the different logos to us and we will
pick one.”
According to Fleshman, the school is
A representative from the Franklin County Sheriff’s
Office attended a recent Prairie Township board meeting
to address a spike in drug use.
“Overdoses have been a big problem lately,” said
Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Cindy Forsythe. “Last
week, we had 12 overdoses in 24 hours. We had a few
we brought back with Narcan and one person actually
died. If you see someone laid out in a car or on the sidewalk,
call us so we can see if we can save them.”
Forsythe reminded residents that they are the
greatest resource in helping to address community
issues.
“People who live in the township are the best source
for information,” Forsythe said. “We can’t help with
something if we don’t know about it.”
There also has been people reportedly entering the
property around the future Galloway Sport Complex.
The deputy suggested the township invest in signage
that states off road vehicles are not allowed on the
property, as well as additional lighting and gates.
In other news, the board approved rules for the new
sports complex.
“The rules for the Galloway Sport Complex were
collected from other facilities,” said Tracy Hatmaker,
Prairie Township administrator. “One of the rules is
no smoking and vaping.”
The board gave an update on high grass abatement
thrilled to partner with the township on
Among these future projects also could
include students working with the road
in the summer.
“Next year, we hope to use Franklin
This summer, the township employed
other duties the road department must
Hilltop plan community meeting
The J. Ashburn Boys and Girls Club will host a
community kickoff meeting for the Hilltop Community
Plan at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at 85 Clarendon Ave. in
Columbus.
Planners from the Neighborhood Design Center
have been canvassing the Hilltop area all summer and
are ready to share an update on their findings, as well
as discuss the next phase of the process.
around the westside
and the continuing issue with residents not keeping up
with their properties, especially in the summer.
In July and August, the township abated 24 properties
totaling more than $11,316 in charges, as well as
spent more than $7,760 in trash and debris pickup for
eight properties.
The board also held a second reading and approved
a resolution that puts a one-year moratorium on open
loop geothermal heat systems in the township.
“These systems pump water out of wells and release
the water to the surface once it is used,” Hatmaker
said. “The system is operating 24 hours a day and is
releasing more water than is allowed. The state is not
ready to regulate this yet, so we want to wait a year
and see what develops.”
An open loop geothermal system is connected
directly to a ground water source, such as a well or
pond, and directly pumps the water into a building to
the heat pump unit where it is used for heating and
cooling. Used water from the system is disposed
through surface drainage, meaning the water is
deposited to a low area, such as a river or pond. No pollution
is generated when the water is returned, the
only different in the water is that there is a slight
change in the temperature.
Right now, open loop systems are only supposed to
release 5,000 gallons per day. The Ohio EPA has
expressed concerns about the systems because officials
believe these systems are releasing more water and
are not being regulated, according to Hatmaker.
City sells bonds for infrastructure repairs
On Sept. 17 Columbus City Council
passed ten ordinances to authorize the sale
of over $399 million in bonds to fund major
investments in city infrastructure, public
safety, utilities and housing. Of the ordinances,
six are from past voted bond packages.
Councilmembers and the city’s administration
worked to align budget priorities
with community feedback through the
2018 capital budget planning to invest in
neighborhood needs across the city.
“Our 2018 capital investments enhance
the quality of life for all our residents by
upgrading critical infrastructure needs and
neighborhood amenities throughout the
City,” said councilwoman Elizabeth Brown.
“At the same time, residents save millions
in tax dollars thanks to strong fiscal management
from city leadership and our city
auditor, which has resulted in Columbus’
AAA bond rating.”
million in street resurfacing, lighting and
sidewalk projects. This represents the
largest resurfacing investment in the history
of Columbus. The budget also includes
a $5 million investment in housing.
“We are happy to partner with
Columbus City Council on the sale of bonds
to help with capital improvements of
Columbus neighborhoods,” said Mayor
Andrew Ginther.
“Construction projects like these will
have a visible impact on neighborhoods
and create jobs to bolster economic
growth,” said council president Shannon
Hardin. “This plan is critical to upgrading
neighborhoods and we are grateful to our
residents who’ve supported past voted
bond packages to allow many of these projects
to advance.”
is completed, said Lowe. She’s not sure
when the work will be done, but she hopes
by the end of the year.
The work is being done in the rear of the
library in the middle of the Lincoln Village
Plaza so the front part is not much affected.
Shortly after the work began and the construction
crew was digging and excavating,
“the building was shaking” she said.
The work is an expansion of the children’s
area, the first time this area has
been enlarged since1991, said library
spokesman Mark Dubovec.
“We’ll have a much larger program
space and will be able to accommodate
large audiences,” Lowe said.
High ceilings mean the jugglers can toss
their bowling pins higher. Larger space
means magicians and musicians have more
room for their equipment. There will be a
pull-down screen and a projector that can
be coordinated with a computer for power
point presentations.
The expansion is adding 3,600 square
have been made. Patrons can still check
out books, use computers, and attend programs.
However, the front meeting room is
closed as is the Community Education
Center which is being used as storage.
Shortly before work began, signs were
posted to alert patrons to the inconveniences
they would experience. Yellow caution
tape and hard hats are among the items
used in displays to help explain those
inconveniences.
“The public is our number one concern,”
Lowe said. “Patrons are accepting and
understanding.”
The cost of the work, according to the
budget of Linford Construction Co. is
$841,475. The library, Lowe said, will pay
40 percent of the cost, and Continental
Reality, the landlord, will cover the
remaining 60 percent over 18 years.
Library funds for this work is coming
from a 1-mill levy voters approved in 2010.
This 10-year levy expires in 2020.
“We want to keep our promises to the
voters and make sure we support all
aspects of the library,” said Lowe.
wisdom, experience and contributions of our community’s senior citizens
Eat healthy at 50 and beyond
A balanced diet is an integral element of
a healthy lifestyle for men, women and
children alike.
But while kids and young adults might
be able to get away with an extra cheeseburger
here or there, men and women
approaching 50 have less leeway.
According to the National Institute on
Aging, simply counting calories without
regard for the foods being consumed is not
enough for men and women 50 and older to
maintain their long-term health. Rather,
the NIA emphasizes the importance of
choosing low-calorie foods that have a lot of
the nutrients the body needs.
But counting calories can be an effective
and simple way to maintain a healthy
weight, provided those calories are coming
from nutrient-rich foods. The NIA advises
men and women over 50 adhere to the following
daily calorie intake recommendations
as they attempt to stay healthy into
their golden years.
Women:
•Not physically active: 1,600 calories.
•Somewhat active: 1,800 calories.
•Active lifestyle: between 2,000 and
2,200 calories.
Men:
•Not physically active: 2,000 calories.
•Somewhat active: between 2,200 and
2,400 calories.
•Active lifestyle: between 2,400 and
2,800 calories.
When choosing foods to eat, the NIA recommends
eating many different colors and
types of vegetables and fruits.
Phytochemicals are substances that occur
naturally in plants, and there are thousands
of these substances offering various
benefits.
The NIA also advises that men and
women over 50 make sure at least half the
grains in their diets are whole grains.
Numerous studies have discovered the various
benefits of whole grains, which are
loaded with protein, fiber, antioxidants and
other nutrients.
Another potential hurdle men and
women over 50 may encounter is a change
Feeding America has declared
September “Hunger Action Month.”
The Franklin County Office on Aging
takes an active role in ensuring that older
adults in Franklin County have access to
the food assistance services they need to
preserve their independence and quality of
life.
Food assistance services are ones that
address the needs of those who are struggling
to either gain access to food or prepare
their meals. Franklin County is a
service rich community that offers a myriad
of services to combat hunger and these
services are a vital resource to older adults
residing within our community. It is a priority
of the Franklin County Office on
Aging, through the Senior Options program,
to provide both the connection to
and funding for food assistance services
such as home delivered meals and nutritional
supplements.
In 2017, Franklin County Senior
in their sense of smell and taste. A person’s
sense of smell may fade with age, and
because smell and taste are so closely related,
foods enjoyed for years may no longer
tantalize the taste buds. That can be problematic,
as many people instinctually add
more salt to foods they find bland.
According to the U.S. Office of Disease
Prevention and Health Promotion, older
adults should consume no more than 1,500
milligrams of sodium per day. That equates
to roughly 3/4 teaspoon of salt. Older men
and women should resist the temptation to
use salt to add flavor to foods, instead opting
for healthy foods that they can still
smell and taste.
Maintaining a healthy diet after 50 may
require some hard work and discipline. But
the long-term benefits of a healthy diet
make the extra effort well worth it.
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
September is National Preparedness Month. National Preparedness Month was
founded after 9/11 to increase preparedness across the United States. The 2018
theme: “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” focuses on planning. We are
reminded to take the opportunity to plan and prepare ourselves and our families for all
hazards and emergencies before they happen. Emergencies can occur anytime and
anywhere without advance notice.

tornados. Make sure to consider the costs associated with disasters and save for an

gas.
In our area power outages are a common occurrence this time of year after a

to last for at least 72 hours. To receive advance warnings of thunderstorms or other

system is designed to notify residents about emergencies and other important
community news in jurisdictions throughout Franklin County.
Know how you will communicate during a disaster. Consider these steps to start
your emergency communication plan:
2. SHARE. Make certain trusted people in your support network know:
Where your emergency supplies are kept.
How to contact you if the power goes out.

contact each other directly.
What medical devices or assistive technology devices that you need to have
with you if there is an evacuation order from local officials.

ventilation.
How to obtain a copy of your plan.
3. PRACTICE. Just like you would a fire drill.
Discuss your needs and/or the needs of a family member; learn about their
assistance or services. Advocate including people with disabilities and others
with access and functional needs into emergency planning in your community.
I want to get this complaint out of the
way before I begin the review for “A Simple
Favor” and it is directed at the studio who
produced this film. To whomever it may
concern, the marketing was pitiful and at
no point should the person in charge be
t
tasked with promoting a film of this nature
ever again.
It was clear from watching this film that
this person or persons had no idea how to
pitch the concept to an audience. In one
trailer, it was billed as a straight comedy.
GOOD
LUCK!
In another, a thriller. At no point in time
did it convey the truth of this film and that
is one of ridiculous trash. And I truly mean
that in the best way possible.
“A Simple Favor” is a bizarre, off-thewalls
(and rails) dark comedy with bite and
wit. It’s one of the most entertaining films
of the year and yet one of the strangest as
well.
It opens with not-so-popular vlogger
Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick)
preparing to make feel better cookies for
those low in spirits. As she’s readying the
batter, she launches into why she felt it
was important to make these particular
cookies as she is struggling with the recent
disappearance of her best friend.
Flashing back to the weeks prior, we see
Stephanie, who is generally viewed by her
peers as an uptight, lonely spinster, signing
up for a majority of the festive activities
in her son’s elementary classroom. After
hearing pointed comments about her lack
of doing, well, anything else other than
crafts, she tries to strike up a friendship
with the mother of her son’s new playmate.
At first, people think she is out of her
depth for wanting to befriend Emily Nelson
(Blake Lively), a rich and fabulous public
relations manager at a fashion agency, but
the two soon strike up a relationship that is
equal parts supportive and stinging.
As the weeks go by, we see them growing
closer, and we see Stephanie begin to
covet Emily’s life — her lovely home, her
exciting job, her beautiful husband Sean
(Henry Golding.) Then one day, Emily asks
Stephanie for a simple favor and is never
heard from again.
Upon receiving confirmation of her
death, Stephanie and Sean begin a romantic
relationship. Shortly thereafter, she
www.columbusmessenger.com
“A Simple Favor” an unexpected and demented delight
Pets of the week
The Reel Deal
moves into their home and then strange
things start to happen. Emily and Sean’s
son Nicky (Ian Ho) begins to talk of seeing
his mother, and then items around the
home mysteriously appear and disappear.
A haunting never crosses Stephanie’s
mind, yet sabotage does. ‘Is Emily still
alive?’ she wonders. And if so, why is she
hiding and trying to frame others for her
death? Or maybe Stephanie is not so innocent
after all.
From start to finish, “A Simple Favor” is
utterly bonkers and it revels in the fact.
There are twists and turns and while most
of those go nowhere, they are essential to
the messy plot. This film goes all over the
place and the actors are game, particularly
Kendrick and Lively. I’ve never been a big
fan of Lively’s acting, but she is so good in
the role of Emily. She’s the kind of morally
ambiguous character I think most actors
would love to play, though it would be hard
to pull off. She does though, and it’s great
to watch.
Coming from director Paul Feig, who is
primarily known for comedic films like
“The Heat” and “Spy,” “A Simple Favor” is
an unexpected, demented delight that was
given no marketing favor from its studio.
Truthfully, its theme and the general
atmosphere of ‘What the heck am I watching?’
won’t be for everyone, but for those
looking for an odd and oddly good time, do
yourself a favor and catch this movie.
