But opponents of the move still hope it can be delayed. A Ministry of Education spokeswoman has said preparation for the demolition would begin either today or tomorrow. The physical demolition of Chris the buildings would then begin after Doudney Labour Weekend and last up to six weeks, she said. Redcliffs School principal Rose McInerney said it would be “bittersweet” to see the old buildings demolished, but the heart of the school “is its people.” “For us, it is a sign of the progress of the new rebuild and coming home [to Redcliffs].” THe Friends of Redcliffs Park had been fighting the demolition and the planned construction of a new school in Redcliffs Park. THe group had been set to meet with the Workforce and Education Select Committee on September 19 to discuss a petition they sent to Parliament earlier in the year. That meeting had been delayed until October 17. Group member Chris Doudney said he was not aware of the planned demolition start. “Certainly the ministry said they were going to demolish the FAREWELL: A ceremony to farewell the former Redcliffs School buildings was held in June. buildings this month.” Mr Doudney said the group had asked the select committee to request the ministry to delay the demolition until after it had finished the process. “THey said they can’t order it, they could ask. I had hoped the ministry would have taken notice of what the select committee said.” Previously, the ministry had said that the demolition would not be delayed by the progress of the petition. Mr Doudney said he would feel better if the ministry held off for another two weeks at least. “I doubt we’ll be lying Down in front of bulldozers, But we will if that would help at all.” Earlier this year, the school held a “really special” farewell for the old site before crossing the road to turn the sod on the site of the new school build in Redcliffs Park. Current and former pupils shared stories of their time At the old site and “a few tears were shed,” Mrs McInerney said. “THat was a really special moment for us, to reflect on the history of the site.” She said school staff were proud that they had already retrieved as many items of historical value from the site as they could. Weaving goodbye to plastic supermarket bags • By Sophie Cornish AS NEW Zealanders face the end of the plastic bag era, one woman is helping the cause with an ancient Maori tradition. Lana Hart is the founder of Kai Baskets, an initiative to help shoppers reduce their plastic consumption – and it’s proving popular. The company’s Facebook page has reached 250,000 people in 10 days. The baskets, made entirely of flax, are designed to hang on the side of trolleys and are used to hold fresh produce. Kai Baskets began its first pilot programme at the end last month at Raeward Fresh Lana Hart Tower Junction. Like trolleys, the baskets are free to use for customers. The project came about through Ms Hart’s own frustration when food shopping for her family of five. “I would end up walking home with a bunch of plastic bags that I didn’t want . . . I always just wanted them to provide something to cart the produce from the produce section to the checkout.” she said. Ms Hart said it “made sense” to use a plant material which is prevalent in New Zealand and has already been traditionally woven into Maori kete – flax baskets. A small team of about 30, many of whom are volunteers, worked on creating the baskets, which are made from the same design as wahakura baby baskets, which are made for newborns to help reduce cot death. The pilot is being funded by the Sustainable Initiatives Fund Trust. To keep them clean, the flax baskets are sanitised at the time as the trolleys and other baskets. One basket can take about 45min to weave. However a lot of preparation work happens before this to prepare the flax for weaving. This includes stripping and measuring the flax, boiling it to get rid of germs and then airdrying it. Smoke alarms after woman rescues neighbour • By Sophie Cornish SMOKE ALARMS will be installed in homes in two Sydenham streets after a man was pulled from a house fire recently. Fire and Emergency New Zealand will visit properties in Scott St and Deyell Cres on Saturday to install smoke alarms and provide safety advice. A 65-year-old Scott St resident was pulled from his burning home, which didn’t have working smoke alarms, on September 29, after he is believed to have fallen asleep. The man was rescued by his neigbour, who has spoken about how she battled “unbearable heat” to save him. It was just after 9am when Bernadine Worsdale looked Bernadine Worsdale out of her window to see smoke billowing from the property next door. She sprinted outside in her pyjamas and saw another neighbour running towards her, who phoned 111. “I was focusing on my neighbour and thinking get him out,” said Mrs Worsdale. Mrs Worsdale ran to the front window of the burning house, pulled it ajar before yelling for her neighbour, who she didn’t wish to name. “I think he was sleeping, if I hadn’t of known his name, he may have not woken up and responded . . . it was so intense, I hate fire, the heat was unbearable.” He appeared a bit “dazed and confused,” said Mrs Worsdale who then helped to pull him out of the window. “I tried to get him to jump but he couldn’t. I pulled him from under the armpits and dragged him out of the window.” Fire investigator Wayne Hamilton said the fire had been caused by unattended cooking while the man was in his sunroom. The house did not have working smoke alarms. The fire continued to burn for more than an hour. Mrs Worsdale said she was driven by adrenaline to help her neighbour, who thanked her profusely. “It all happened so fast. I am just so grateful and so pleased he’s alive . . . I gave him some water, a blanket and a hug.
